Presented in this paper is a modeling and simulation methodology for 3 dimensional man-made systems. Based on DEVS(discrete event system specification) formalism[13], we propose GK-DEVS (geometrical and kinematic DEVS) formalism to describe the geometrical and kinematic structure and continuous state dynamics. To represent geometry and kinematics, we add a hierarchical structure to the conventional atomic model. In addition, we employ the "empty event" and its external event function for continuous state changing. In terms of abstract simulation algorithm[13], the simulation method of GK-DEVS, named GK-Simulator, is proposed for combined discrete-continuous simulation. Using GK-DEVS, the simulation of an FMS(flexible manufacturing system) consisting of a luring machine, a 3-axis machine and a RGV-mounted robot has been peformed.en peformed.
Feedback loop dominance is a key concept to understand structural driving forces of system behavior. In this paper, we propose two kinds of shifts in dominant feedback loops: continuous shifts (CS) and discrete shifts (DS). With the help of questionnaires, we verified three hypotheses regarding cognitive biases in perceiving the shifts in dominant feedback loops: 1) failure in perceiving continuous shifts, 2) tendency of decision making based on discrete shifts, and 3) different perception on the dominant feedback loops between level variables and rate variables. We discussed the implication of these cognitive biases on time delay and timing strategy in decision-making processes.
In the previous work, the authors studied the problem of robust discretization of linear time-invariant systems with polytopic uncertainties, where linear matrix inequality (LMI) conditions were developed to find an approximate discrete-time (DT) model of a continuous-time (CT) system with uncertainties in polytopic domain. The system matrices of obtained DT model preserved the polytopic structures of the original CT system. In this paper, we extend the previous approach to solve the problem of robust discretization of polytopic uncertain systems with aperiodic sampling. In contrast with the previous work, the sampling period is assumed to be unknown, time-varying, but contained within a known interval. The solution procedures are presented in terms of unidimensional optimizations subject to LMI constraints which are numerically tractable via LMI solvers. Finally, an example is given to show the validity of the proposed techniques.
In the future, the convenient speech command system will become an widely-using interface in automation systems. But the previous research in speech recognition didn't give satisfactory recognition results for the practical realization in the noise environment. The purpose of this research is the development of a practical system, which reliably recognizes the speech command of the registered users, by complementing an existing research which used the image information with the speech signal. For the lip-reading feature extraction from a image, we used the DWT(Discrete Wavelet Transform), which reduces the size and gives useful characteristics of the original image. And to enhance the robustness to the environmental changes of speakers, we acquired the speech signal by stereo method. We designed an economic stand-alone system, which adopted a Bt829 and an AD1819B with a TMS320C31 DSP based add-on board.
In realistic control systems, the nonlinear salutation attributes of the control actuator due to physical limitations should be taken into account. This nonlinear saturation of actuators may cause not only deterioration of the control performance but also a large overshoot during start-up and shut-down. As the overshoot increases, the system may become oscillatory unstable. In this paper, the supervisor implementation which guarantees good performance lot saturation operation and prevents reset wind-up is presented. Moreover, the sufficient conditions of the stability for saturated systems using supervisory control with a dynamic controller are provided in the discrete-time domain. A numerical example is illustrated to depict the efficiency of supervisory control for a typical saturated production-distribution system controlled by a discrete-time dynamic controller and to validate basic results by simulation.

Formidable growth of Internet technologies has revealed challenging issues about its scale and performance evaluation. Modeling and simulation play a central role in the evaluation of the behavior and performance of the large-scale network systems. Large numbers of nodes affect simulation performance, simulation execution time and scalability in a weighty manner. Most of the existing simulators have numerous problems such as size, lack of system theoretic approach and complexity of modeled network. In this work, a scalable discrete-event modeling approach is described for studying networks' scalability and performance traits. Key fundamental attributes of Internet and its protocols are incorporated into a set of simulation models developed using the Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) approach. Large-scale network models are simulated and evaluated to show the benefits of the developed network models and approaches.
Human hepatocytes, with complete hepatic metabolizing enzymes, transporters and cofactors, represent the gold standard for in vitro evaluation of drug metabolism, drug-drug interactions, and hepatotoxicity. Successful cryopreservation of human hepatocytes enables this experimental system to be used routinely. The use of human hepatocytes to evaluate two major adverse drug properties: drug-drug interactions and hepatotoxicity, are summarized in this review. The application of human hepatocytes in metabolism-based drug-drug interaction includes metabolite profiling, pathway identification, P450 inhibition, P450 induction, and uptake and efflux transporter inhibition. The application of human hepatocytes in toxicity evaluation includes in vitro hepatotoxicity and metabolism-based drug toxicity determination. A novel system, the Integrated Discrete Multiple Organ Co-culture (IdMOC) which allows the evaluation of nonhepatic toxicity in the presence of hepatic metabolism, is described.

The design of experiment(DOE) with orthogonal arrays is adopted when the engineering design is needed in a discrete design space. In this research, a design process with orthogonal array is peformed to obtain the optimum design which satisfy the frequency target of the steering system. The optimum design is determined from the analysis of means(ANOM) and sensitivity information about design variables is evaluated by the analysis of variance(ANOVA). Interactions between design variables are investigated to achieve additivity which should be valid in using orthogonal array. It is shown that when strong interactions exist, the DOE process with orthogonal array considering interaction is introduced to find out optimum design.

In this paper, we propose an efficient channel delay estimation method for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, especially over doubly-selective fading channels which are selective in both the symbol time domain and subcarrier frequency domain. For the doubly-selective fading channels in single frequency network (SFN), long and strong echoes exist and thus the conventional discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) based channel delay estimation system often fails to produce the exact channel delay profile. Based on the analysis of the discrete-time frequency response of the channel impulse response (CIR) coefficients in the DFT-based channel delay estimation system, we develop a method to effectively extract the true CIR from the aliased signals by employing a simple narrow-band low-pass filter (NB-LPF). The performance of the proposed system is verified using the COST207 TU6 SFN channel model.
A Discrete Event Dynamic System is a system whose states change in response to the occurrence of events from a predefined event set. A major difficulty in developing analytical results for the systems is the lack of appropriate modeling techniques. This paper proposes the use of Real-time Temporal Logic as a modeling tool for the analysis and control of DEDS. The Real-time Temporal Logic Frameworks is extended with a suitable structure of modeling hard real-time constraints. Modeling rules are developed for several specific situations. It is shown how the graphical model can be translated to a system of linear equations and constraints.
