This paper is about the ocean current power generation using sea water incoming into the lake surrounded by barrages and sea water discharged from a dam made of artificial structures. In operation of a tidal power plant, the sea water discharged from a turbine structure and a gate structure of a tidal power plant is faster than the tidal current caused by tides in nature and has better characteristics than that to run ocean current turbines. It is shown that the sea water discharged after generating electricity through a turbine generator of a tidal power plant and the sea water discharged from a gate structure of a tidal dam still have kinetic energy high enough to run an ocean current turbine and produce valuable electricity.
Innovated technique to oxidize pollutants has been developed. The technique for this study uses plasma discharge in 2-phase (Air-Water) and is called Discharged Water Generating (DWG) system. It produces electric arc which generates not only the physical decomposing power against the pollutants but also oxidants to sterilize pollutants depending on the inlet gas species. These physical and chemical products play an important role in COD decrease and biodegradability enhancement. The enhancement of biodegradability for the refractory organic substances in aqueous solution was estimated in this study. Argon discharge reduced NBDCOD of EDTA from 58.7mg/L to 38.8mg/L, but oxygen discharge and ozonation reduced it to 37.74mg/L and 38.73mg/L respectively. Furthermore, Argon discharge changed 1181mg/L of NBDCOD of dye effluent into 606mg/L but oxygen discharge and ozonation changed it into 888mg/L and 790mg/L respectively.
It has been reported that some events of a rupture of seam generator tube have occurred in nuclear power plants around the world. Main causes of the leakage are from various types of corrosion in the steam generator(SG) tubings. Primary water stress corrosion cracking(PWSCC) of steam generator tubings have occurred in many tubes in Korean plant, and they were repaired using sleeves or plugs, In order to develop proper repair criteria, it is necessary to ascertain the leak behavior of the tubings. A high pressure leak and burst testing system was manufactured. Various types of Electro Discharged Machined (EDM) notches were developed on the SG tubes. Leak rate and burst pressure were measured on the tubes at room temperature. Burst pressure of the part through wall defected tubes depends on the defect depth, Water flow rates after the burst were independent of the t1aw types; tubes having 20 to 60 mm long EDM notches showed similar flow rates regardless of the defect depth. A fast pressurization rate gave the tube a lower burst pressure than the case of a slow pressurization.
The integrated power system combining a tidal power plant and two ocean current power parks is suggested. It is characterized by the set up of an ocean current power park in the lake side by installing a number of ocean current turbines generating electricity by using sea water flow discharged into the lake side from the turbine generator of a tidal power plant and an ocean current power park in the sea side by installing a number of ocean current turbines generating electricity by using sea water flow exiting into the sea side through the sluice gate from the lake side. The vision of the integrated power system is demonstrated by the simple theory and simulation results of the SIWHA Tidal Power Plant. And it is shown that the newly proposed integrated power system combining tidal power and ocean current power can produce very high economical benefits.
This paper presents experimental results carried out on the purge characteristic of the anodic dead-end mode fuelcell and how to improve the cell performance by pulsation effects. The dead-end mode fuelcell has some merits that a fuel supplying device is not needed and the cell power is higher than that in the open mode fuelcell. However, the purge is necessary for preventing the porous media from being flooded by liquid water formed in the channel. At this time, the un-reacted fuel is discharged with the liquid water together in purge process. The discharged fuel can make the fuel efficiency lower. Therefore, the number of purge times should be decreased for the better fuel efficiency. In this study, the outlet of the anode channel was equipped with a purge solenoid valve and a pulsation generator. The purge times was decreased when the current density decreased and operation pressure increased without the pulsation effects. In addition, when the pulsation effects such as various frequencies or amplitudes were applied, purge times was alleviated up to 40%.

The water discharged from sewage treatment plants has been considered to be useless, due to itslack of economic utility for small hydro power generation. Considering that most sewage treatment facilities have a water head of less than 2 meters and their flow rate is constant, it is necessary to develop a small hydro power generation device capable of maintaining stable power generation and efficiency. This paper presents the development of anintegrated small hydro power generation system and presents its performance evaluation and results. Then, the economics and use of the system for practical applications are suggested. As a result, it is foundthat the generator efficiency is 92%, the electric energy produced is 10kWh and the economic efficiency, as described by the B/C ratio,is 1.0 or more. Particularly, if the operating level of the generation device is maintained at 80% or more of the rated power, it is possible to secure its economic efficiency and, after 23 years, the investment cost will bereturned. The integrated hydro power generation device is expected to have a positive effect not only in terms of the water discharged from the sewage treatment plant, but also in terms of facilities capable of securing similar flow characteristics.
This study was conducted to survey and inspect the currently operating anaerobic digestion facilities for animal manure. Recently, the number of anaerobic digestion facility for livestock manure is on the rise thanks to growing interest in developing alternative energy. A anaerobic digestion system has been constructed in large scale farms or animal manure public resource center. Currently, most animal manure anaerobic digestion facilities in operation are producing biogas from the pig slurry which contains 97% water. Methane gas can be used to operate a engine generator which then produces electricity. Anaerobic digestate, a by-product of digestion, is mostly utilized as a liquid fertilizer after curing processing. Only in a few cases, it can be discharged after wastewater treatment process. The problem of anaerobic digestate treatment is the imbalance of C/N ratio. The content of N was too high to keep it into normal process.
Due to water shortages caused by water pollution and climate change, total organic carbon (TOC) standards have been implemented for wastewater discharged from public sewage treatment facilities. Furthermore, there is a growing interest and body of research pertaining to the reuse of sewage treatment water as a secure alternative water resource. The membrane bio-reactor (MBR) method is commonly used for advanced wastewater treatment because it can remove organic and inorganic ions and it does not require or emit any chemicals. However, the MBR process uses a separation membrane (MF), which requires frequent film cleaning due to fouling caused by a high concentration of mixed liquor suspended solid (MLSS). In this study, process improvement and microbubble cleaning efficiency were evaluated to improve the differential pressure, water flow, and MF fouling, which are the biggest disadvantages of operating the MF. The existing MBR method was improved by installing a precipitation tank between the air tank and the MBR tank in which raw water was introduced. Microbubbles were injected into a separation membrane tank into which the supernatant water from the precipitation tank was introduced. The microbubble generator was operated with a 15 day on, 15 day off cycle for 5 months to collect discharged water samples (4L) and measure TOC. As the supernatant water from the precipitation tank flowed into the separation membrane tank, about 95% of the supernatant water MLSS was removed so the MF fouling from biological contamination was prevented. Due to the application of microbubbles to supernatant water from the precipitation tank, the differential pressure of the separation membrane tank decreased by 1.6 to 2.3 times and the water flow increased by 1.4 times. Applying microbubbles increased the TOC removal rate by more than 58%. This study showed that separately operating the air tank and the separation membrane tank can reduce fouling, and suggested that applying additional microbubbles could improve the differential pressure, water flow, and fouling to provide a more efficient advanced treatment method.
This study investigated the hydraulic impact scope and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration distribution by the micro-bubble aeration in the Juksan Lake located in Asan city in Chungcheongnam-do province. A tracing experiment for hydraulic impact scope was used which constituted a 20% rhodamine solution. A 160 m-guideline was installed in the horizontal direction of the micro-bubble jet flow and the rhodamine concentration, water temperature, and DO concentration were measured at depths of 1 m, 2 m, and 3 m at intervals of 10 m. In the Juksan Lake, the effective range of jet flow discharged by the micro-bubble generator was about 40 m, and after then the jet plume moved up to 80 m to 120 m through the advection and diffusion processes of ambient water. DO concentration in the lake was maintained at 7.4-12.6 mg/L during tracking experiment. The DO of the lake sediments improved from 0.2 mg/L to 8.0 mg/L after applying micro-bubble aeration. In conclusion, the micro-bubble aeration can be an effective technology for the management and improvement of water quality in an agricultural reservoir.
