  • A brief review on the thermal plasma synthesis of nano-sized powders is presented according to the application materials, such as, metals, ceramics, glasses, carbonaceous materials and other functional composites, such as, supported metal catalyst and core-shell structured nano materials. As widely adopted plasma sources available for thermal plasma synthesis of nanosized powders, three kinds of plasma torches, such as transferred and non-transferred DC and RF plasma torches, are introduced with the main features of each torch system. In the basis of the described torch features and the properties of suggested materials, application results including synthesis mechanism are reviewed in this paper.

The effective method to convert solar energy into electrical energy is by solar photovoltaic power generation technologies. LED Emitting Diode is a kind of component which can transform electricity into visible light. As the smart current control system for photovoltaic street lights, the proposed system has improved the battery charging and discharging mechanism to extend the lifespan and effectively controls the LED discharge current according to battery charge state and lighting.

  • The electrochemical impulse oscillations of the cathodic currents at the platinum group (Pt, Pd) electrode/(0.05M KHC$_{8}H_{4}O_{4}$) buffer solution interfaces have been studied using voltammetric, chronoamperometric, and electrochemical impedance methods. The periodic impulses of the cathodic currents are the activation controlled currents due to the hydrogen evolution reaction, and depend on the fractional surface coverage of the adsorbed hydrogen intermediate and potential. The oscillatory mechanism of the cathodic current impulses is connected with the unstable steady state of negative differential resistance. The widths and periods of the cathodic current impulses are 4ms or 5ms and 152.5ms or 305ms, respectively. The H$^{+}$ discharge reaction step is 38 or 61 times faster thatn the recombination reaction steps and the H$^{+}$ mass transport processes. The atom-atom recombination reaction step is twice faster thatn the atom-ion recombination reaction step. The two kinds of active sites corresponding to the atom-atom and atom-ion recombination reaction steps exist on the platinum group electrode surfaces.

  • Nonthermal bio-compatible plasma (bioplasma) sources and their characteristics operating at atmospheric pressure could be used for biological cell interactions, especially for plasma bioscience and medicines. The electron temperatures and plasma densities of this bioplasma are measured to be 0.7 ~ 1.8 eV and $(3-5){\times}10^{14-15}cm^{-3}$, respectively. Herein, we introduced general schematic view of the plasma-initiated ultraviolet photolysis of water inside the biological solutions or living tissue for the essential generation mechanism of the reactive hydroxyl radical [OH] and hydrogen peroxide [$H_2O_2$], which may result in apoptotic cell death in plasma bioscience and medicines. Further, we surveyed the various nonthermal bioplasma sources including plasma jet, micro-DBD (dielectric barrier discharge) and nanosecond discharged plasma. The diseased biological protein, cancer, and mutated cells could be treated by these bioplasma sources or bioplasma activated water to result in their apoptosis for new paradigm of plasma bioscience and medicines.

  • The purpose of this study is to enhance an adhesion between substrate and Diamond-like Carbon (DLC) film. DLC has many outstanding properties such as low friction, high wear resistance and corrosion resistance. However, it is difficult to achieve enough adhesion because of weak bonding between DLC film and the substrate. For improvement adhesion, a layer between DLC film and the substrate was prepared by dual post plasma. DLC film was deposited on nitrided layer by linear ion source. The composed compound layer between substrate and DLC film was investigated by Glow Discharge Spectrometer (GDS) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The synthesized bonding structure of DLC film was analyzed using a micro raman spectrometer. Mechanical properties were measured by nano-indentation. In order to clarify the mechanism for improvement in adhesive strength, it was observed by scratch test.

  • Low pressure radio-frequency glow discharges are investigated using theoretical modeling and various experimental diagnostic methods. In the calculations, global models and transformer models are developed to understand the chemical kinetics as well as the electrical properties such as the effective collision frequency, the heating mechanism and the power transferred to the plasma electrons. In addition, Boltzmann equation solver is used to compensate the effect of the electron energy distribution function (EEDF) shape in the global model, and the general expression of energy balance for non-Maxwellian electrons is developed. In the experiments, a number of traditional plasma diagnostic methods are used to compare with calculated results such as Langmuir probe, optical emission spectroscopy (OES), optical absorption spectroscopy (OAS) and two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence (TALIF). These theoretical and experimental methods are applied to understand several interesting phenomena in low pressure ICP discharges. The chemical and physical properties of low pressure ICP discharges are described and the applications of these methods are discussed.

  • Growth of Electrical Tree Under 50Hz~60Hz high electric stress has been studied on the Occurrence of a Pattern, to the Progression Speed at Y axis of electrical Tree. CCD Images of evolving tree structures could be obtained in both systems. Electrical Treeing was found to occur reproducibly, but in a markedly different manner in the two morphologimlly different but chemically identical materials. For the measurement of Electrical Tree, a visual measurement with an optical microscope has been used to explain breakdown mechanism in High-voltage systems.

  • The synthesis of $C_{60}$@MWCNT was carried out at room temperature (${\sim}25^{\circ}C$) from arc-discharge prepared Multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). They were oxidized and acid treated for tube opening. Then $C_{60}$ molecules were encapsulated into MWCNTs by wetting them with $C_{60}$-toluene solution for several minutes followed by ultrasonification. $C_{60}$@MWCNT was cleaned by pure toluene to remove any excess $C_{60}$. $C_{60}$@MWCNT was characterized by electron microscopy, which showed large scale filling of $C_{60}$ into MWCNTs. It was observed that the mechanism of insertion of $C_{60}$ into MWCNTs may be due to the capillary suction at the opening ends of MWCNTs.

  • Tanker cargo tanks are equipped with the means of raising and maintaining the cargo discharge temperature to a suitable level. In this paper, a new heating coil design is proposed and analyzed. Contrary to conventional designs, wherein the heating coils are evenly distributed over the tank bottom, the proposed design arranges the heating coils in the central part of the tank bottom, in a vertical direction. Due to the intensive cargo circulation generated, a forced convection is superimposed on a buoyancy-driven natural convection, providing a more efficient mixed convection heat transfer mechanism. Numerical simulations performed by using a finite volume method show that in the case of 7-bar steam Bunker C heavy fuel oil heating, a five-hour circulation phase average heat transfer coefficient equals 199.2 W/m2K. This result might be taken as an impetus for the more thorough experimental examination.
