High Efficacy Plasma Display Utilizing Macro Discharge Cell Structure with Long Electrodes Gap (Long Electrode Gap을 가진 Macro Cell에서의 고효율 PDP 특성 연구)

  • Recently, applications of plasma display to the large public display and transparent display gain much attention. With this background, we report characteristics of opposite electrodes discharge cell with long electrode gap in comparison with conventional co-planar surface discharge. The cell size of test panel is $2950{\mu}m{\times}840{\mu}m$, which corresponds to that of the display having diagonal size of 130" with XGA resolution. Electrode gap of co-planar and opposite electrode structure are $240{\mu}m$ and $500{\mu}m$ respectively. These gap dimensions provide similar driving voltage windows. Experimental results show that opposite discharge provides approximately four fold higher luminous efficacy compared with that of the surface discharge. Resulting efficacy is found to be higher than 19 lm/W in green phosphor with 10 KHz continuous pulse operation.

  • In this study, we investigated the dust explosion characteristics by determining minimum ignition energy and explosion limit for this experiment, we used pine-tree dust which was used widely for the filler of thermosetting resin. The experiment was accomplished according to the variation of discharge gap, dust concentration, particle size and humidity. The result of this experiment are as follows; (1) The relation between the discharge gap and ignition energy was that ignition energy decreased according as the discharge gap became small, but increased when the discharge gap was below 4mm and suddenly became infinite when the discharge gap was below. So, we knew that this infinite value was limit discharge gap. (2) When the dust concentration increase and the particle size became microscopic it was easy to explore and in the same particle size, if the humidity increase the minimum ingnition energy decreased.

  • Various types of plasma display panels(PDPs) have been developed to realize the flat panel display device. But, many of its characteristics must be improved before it can be commercialized. In order to investigate tile characteristics of micro discharge in a PDP ceil, we have constructed a micro-gap discharge system whose electrode gap can be adjustable between $100-1000{\mu}m$ within $0.1{\mu}m$ accuracy. We measured the minimum sustain voltage, current, delay time of discharge while changing parameters(electrode gap distance, electrode surface area, pressure) which influence discharge characteristics.

  • The applications of the pulse power technology are expanding and the necessity of a large current switch as a core component of pulsed power is increasing. A trigger gap switch composed of three electrodes was fabricated and the discharge characteristics were studied according to the change of the pressure, the shape of the main electrode, and the gap distance when the trigger pulse was applied. As a main result, the stable operation range was confirmed through the discharge inception voltage according to the gap distance and electric field analysis was performed in the same structure to confirm the electric field value of the discharge inception voltage.

  • The silent discharge type ozonizer with three electrodes(central electrode, internal electrode, and external electrode) and one discharge gap(discharge gap between internal electrode and external electrode) has been designed and manufactured. It is a silent discharge type ozonizer for which the AC high frequency voltages applied to the central electrode within vacuum discharge tube and the internal electrode for which the external electrode is a ground Ozone is generated by silent discharge in discharge gap. At the moment, discharge characteristics and ozone generation characteristics were investigated in accordance with vacuum of discharge tube, frequency of AC power source, discharge power of ozonizer, and quantity of supplied oxygen gas. In consequence, ozone characteristics proportional to vacuum of discharge tube and frequency of AC power source. The maximum value of ozone can be obtained 7,700[ppm], 460[mg/h] and 70[g/kwh].

  • From the experimental study of wire-cut Electric Discharge Machining of alloyed tool steel and tungsten carbide, the characteristics such as cutting speed, surface roughness has been observed and evaluated for various conditions. Cutting speed is improved as peak discharge current and wire tension become increased, and gap voltage and spark cycle decreased. Surface roughness can be better when peak discharge current and gap voltage become smaller, or spark cycle and wire tension become larger. Secondary cut is recommended to obtain high precision and good quality.

  • This paper discusses the characteristics about the ignition of D.C. main discharge is a plasma jet generator, manufactured for trial as non-transferred type, when the electrical energy appropriate to the ignition is supplied to the gap between the electrodes by using advance discharge of attenuating high frequency voltage generated by a high frequency oscillator with mercury spark gap. These characteristics are under the influences of (a) the length of mercury gap in high frequency oscillator and the quantity of hydrogen flow supplied to it, (b) the condenser capacity of the high frequency oscillator circuit, (c) the length of plasma jet torch in D.C. main discharge circuit and the quantity of argon flow supplied to it, (d) the circuit constants of D.C. main discharge circuit. The results for these characteristics, obtained by this research, are considered to be helpful to the designs for the ignition of a plasma jet as well as the welding arc stabilizer by high frequency discharge and the high frequency arc welder.

  • In this paper, a co-axial type ozonizer varied with discharge gap was designed and manufactured for investigating $\circled1$ discharge characteristics with variation of output voltage power supply, flow rate and gap $\circled2$ ozone generation characteristics with variation of flow rate, gap and discharge power. pure oxygen was used as process gas of the co-axial type ozonizer. In this paper, a double cylindrical type superposed silent discharge type ozonizer which internal electrode can be produced a vacuum has been designed and manufactured. Discharge and ozone generation characteristics have been investigated in accordance with output voltage of power supply, flow-rate, discharge power and vacuum of internal electrode.

  • V-p characteristics and the discharge luminous characteristics in inhomogeneous $SF_6$ gas gap under the positive and negative lightning impulse voltages are presented. The test gap was composed of the plane-to-plane with a needle-shaped protrusion. The applied voltage and the predischarge current were measured by the electric field sensor and the shunt of 50 ${\Omega}$, respectively. The light emission signals were observed by a photomultiplier tube, and a high-speed camera. In a consequence, the dielectric strengths of $SF_6$ gas gap under positive lightning impulse voltages were independent of the gas pressure. In the presence of the positive polarity, the branches of discharge channel were created and the directions of the discharge paths were random. On the other hands, the discharge paths of the negative polarity were more thicker and brighter.

  • On-line monitoring system(OMS) has been developed for the pumped storage generator/motor The OMS is applied to diagnosis of the PD(partial discharge) activity of stator insulation, the shorted-turn of rotor winding and the variation of the air-gap between stator and rotor. The OMS consists of DAS(data acquisition system), main server system, gateway and display PC. The DAS measures the PD, the shorted-turn and air-gap from three sensors installed on the generator/motor. The gateway controls the data which sent by DAS. The main server system saves the data, analyzes the data and conducts the diagnostic algorithm. The display PC shows the diagnostic results of partial discharge, shorted-turn and air-gap. Field tests were conducted using PDA(partial discharge analyzer). The results of the OMS and PDA measurements can be directly correlated with normalized quantity number(NQN), PD magnitude(Qm) and PD pattern.
