A Routing Scheme for Reducing the Power Consumption of USN Nodes (USN 노드의 소비전력 절감을 위한 경로설정 기법)

  • The ubiquitous computing system is expected to be widely utilized in digital home, logistics control, environment/disaster management, medical/health-care services and other applications. The ubiquitous sensor network (USN) is a key infra-structure of this system. Nodes in the USN are exposed to adverse environments and required to perform their missions with very limited power supply only. Also the sensor network is composed of much more nodes. In case some node consumes up its power capacity under a certain required level, the network topology should change and re-routing/ re-transmission of data is necessitated. Resultantly communication protocols studied for conventional wireless networks or ad-hoc networks are not suitable for the sensor network. Schemes should be devised to control the efficient usage of node power in the sensor network. This paper proposes a routing algorithm to enhance the efficiency of power consumption for USN node and analyzes its performance by simulation.

  • Port, one of nation's key infrastructures, is a point of road and sea transports meeting. As a key base of inter-modal transportation systems, the port is of ever increasing importance for realizing nation's vision of making Korea as an economic and logistics hub in the Northeast Asia. At present, Korean ports handle 99.7% of gross trade volumes in Korea, which requires considerable attention on its safety issues. However, due to the critical characteristics of the port and insufficient attention paid to it, the port industry meets more disasters compared to other industries. Therefore, this paper tries to analyze the disasters happened at the port to have better understanding on its reasons, further to use as learned lessons to prevent from potential disasters that may arise at the port.

  • In recent years, interest in drones has grown, and many countries are developing them into a strategic industry of the future. Drones are not only used in industries such as logistics and agriculture but also in various public sectors such as life rescue, disaster investigation, traffic control, and firefighting. One of the most important tasks of a drone is to accurately identify targets in these applications. Target recognition may vary depending on the search environment of the drone. Therefore, this study tests and analyzes the drone's target recognition performance according to changes in the search environment such as the search altitude and the search angle. In addition, we propose a new algorithm that improves upon the disadvantages of the Haar cascade method, which is the existing algorithm that recognizes the target by analyzing a captured image.

Airline Disruption Management Using Ant Colony Optimization Algorithm with Re-timing Strategy (항공사 비정상 운항 복구를 위한 리-타이밍 전략과 개미군집최적화 알고리즘 적용)

  • Airline schedules are highly dependent on various factors of uncertainties such as unfavorable weather conditions, mechanical problems, natural disaster, airport congestion, and strikes. If the schedules are not properly managed to cope with such disturbances, the operational cost and performance are severely affected by the delays, cancelations, and so forth. This is described as a disruption. When the disruption occurs, the airline requires the feasible recovery plan returning to the normal operations in a timely manner so as to minimize the cost and impact of disruptions. In this research, an Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm with re-timing strategy is developed to solve the recovery problem for both aircraft and passenger. The problem consists of creating new aircraft routes and passenger itineraries to produce a feasible schedule during a recovery period. The suggested algorithm is based on an existing ACO algorithm that aims to reflect all the downstream effects by considering the passenger recovery cost as a part of the objective function value. This algorithm is complemented by re-timing strategy to effectively manage the disrupted passengers by allowing delays even on some of undisrupted flights. The delays no more than 15 minutes are accepted, which does not influence on the on-time performance of the airlines. The suggested method is tested on the real data sets from 2009 ROADEF Challenge, and the computational results are compared with the existing ones on the same data sets. The method generates the solution for most of problem set in 10 minutes, and the result generated by re-timing strategy is discussed for its impact.

  • Roadbed failure due to the natural disaster may bring out social and economic damage such as the loss of life and property, the consumption of time and cost for recovery, and the delay of logistics in railway In this study, the method using geosynthetic soilbag was applied to rehabilitation of the railway roadbed which was failed by disaster. The full scale tests with the simulated train loading were performed in order to evaluate the static and dynamic performance at the railway roadbed using geosynthetic soilbag. The results of these tests were compared with unreinforced and reinforced cases with geosynthetic soilbag, respectively The data gathered by various measurement devices from these full scale tests would be useful to evaluate and understand the roadbed with geosynthetic soilbag. In conclusion, geosynthetic soilbag was evaluated as a permanent restoration method to reinforce the roadbed of railway.

Safety Culture, A New Challenge to Human Factors Engineering for 21st Century

  • Objective: This paper discusses the recent challenges to human factors engineering due to the safety culture. Background: As incidents occurring in specific fields such as logistics, plant, energy and medical sectors in Korea, as well as in the public sectors including railway, road, aviation and shipping, are recently raised as social issues from the disaster dimension, those incidents are dealt with as man-made disasters in many cases. The trend regarding all accidents as man-made disasters has been expanded in the active perspective that the controllability of all incidents should be ensured in technology development, due to change from a fatal point of view regarding disasters as random occurrence of uncertainties in the past. Method: Man-made disasters are concluded as human errors, and safety culture stands out as a cause of human errors or a new cause item recently. Because safety culture, however, is a very comprehensive term, of which true nature is obscure, although many definitions of safety culture have been presented, the safety culture may make avoid the true nature and responsibility of an incident, or make the main player and subject obscure. Raising safety culture as a cause without presenting a specific countermeasure will be just a wisdom of hindsight. Results and Conclusion: This study reviews the fundamental discussions on "Is safety culture a task of human factors engineering?" and the existing approach carried out from various perspectives in order to seek an effective approach on the new task of safety culture in the human factors engineering field. This study discusses an engineering approach to meet a precondition that safety culture is not just an added factor through a review of the approaches in the proactive fields such as nuclear power and aviation, and the traditional approaches of human factors engineering. Application: This study especially defines the perspective of socio-technological system that has expanded the existing man-machine system, and discusses a systemic approach embracing various interactions, and several overriding tasks.

  • UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) is increasingly used in diverse fields such as disaster, distributi on, and logistics, but it is pointed out that the inadequacy of related laws and invasion of privacy is an obstacle to industrial growth. The regulatory framework for UAV convergence services is pr oposed based on the regulatory framework. From the technical point of view, regulation on archite ctural design, from the market point of view, concurrent operation of services in a limited area, a l egal evaluation based on post-evaluation rather than a pre-regulation under the legislation of visua l information protection law and a social consensus will contribute to the early settlement of UAV -based convergence services.

  • Nuclear power is one of energy sources which has the safety and economic feasibility in supply. However, due to the recent disaster in Fukushima, Japan, the safety issue of nuclear power is now come to the fore again. For example, Germany and Italy they cancel some projects on nuclear power launching. In South Korea also, a lot of safety concerns are discussed and small and big accidents occur. Thus, this study suggests the supply chain management system based on RFID to improve safety and efficiency at the same time.

Systems to prevent the load resistance loss of pallet racks exposed to cyclic external force

  • This study aims to determine the cause of the load resistance loss in storage racks that can be attributed to external forces such as earthquakes and to improve safety by developing reinforcement systems that can prevent load resistance loss. To this end, a static cyclic loading test was performed on pallet racks commonly used in logistics warehouses. The test results indicated that a pallet rack exposed to an external force loses more than 50% of its load resistance owing to the damage caused to column-beam joints. Three reinforcement systems were developed for preventing load resistance loss in storage racks exposed to an external force and for performing differentiated target functions: column reinforcement device, seismic damper, and viscoelastic damper. Shake table testing was performed to evaluate the earthquake response and verify the performance of these reinforcement systems. The results confirmed that, the maximum displacement, which causes the loss of load resistance and the permanent deformation of racks under external force, is reduced using the developed reinforcement devices. Thus, the appropriate selection of the developed reinforcement devices by users can help secure the safety of the storage racks.

An Analysis of Operating Cost Efficiency in the Introduction of Smart Control Methods to Prevent Industrial Forklift Accidents (산업용 지게차 사고 예방을 위한 스마트 제어방식 도입에 따른 운용 비용 효율성 분석)

  • Forklift trucks are frequently used in logistics warehouses and factories to transport large amounts of cargo. Among the recent accidents at industrial sites, the number of accidents caused by forklifts was the highest. Most accidents are caused by being hit or caught by forklifts. Various safety devices are being applied to prevent forklift accidents. This paper analyzes the efficiency of introducing a smart control method to prevent industrial accidents that may occur in the operation of forklifts. The smart control method generates an amount of money for initial introduction, but if subsidies are secured through government-supported projects, the burden on the workplace will be reduced. When a smart control method is introduced, it is possible to prevent collisions between workers and forklifts and accidents of trapped forklifts.
