Objective : Brainstem metastases are rarely operable and generally unresponsive to conventional radiation therapy or chemotherapy. Recently, Gamma Knife Radiosurgery (GKRS) was used as feasible treatment option for brainstem metastasis. The present study evaluated our experience of brainstem metastasis which was treated with GKRS. Methods : Between November 1992 and June 2010, 32 patients (23 men and 9 women, mean age 56.1 years, range 39-73) were treated with GKRS for brainstem metastases. There were metastatic lesions in pons in 23, the midbrain in 6, and the medulla oblongata in 3 patients, respectively. The primary tumor site was lung in 21, breast in 3, kidney in 2 and other locations in 6 patients. The mean tumor volume was $1,517mm^3$ (range, 9-6,000), and the mean marginal dose was 15.9 Gy (range, 6-23). Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) was obtained every 2-3 months following GKRS. Follow-up MRI was possible in 24 patients at a mean follow-up duration of 12.0 months (range, 1-45). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to evaluate the prognostic factors. Results : Follow-up MRI showed tumor disappearance in 6, tumor shrinkage in 14, no change in tumor size in 1, and tumor growth in 3 patients, which translated into a local tumor control rate of 87.5% (21 of 24 tumors). The mean progression free survival was 12.2 months (range, 2-45) after GKRS. Nine patients were alive at the completion of the study, and the overall mean survival time after GKRS was 7.7 months (range, 1-22). One patient with metastatic melanoma experienced intratumoral hemorrhage during the follow-up period. Survival was found to be associated with score of more than 70 on Karnofsky performance status and low recursive partitioning analysis class (class 1 or 2), in terms of favorable prognostic factors. Conclusion : GKRS was found to be safe and effective for management of brainstem metastasis. The integral clinical status of patient seems to be important in determining the overall survival time.
This study was conducted to find out the changes of survivorship, respiration and organ structure of Mactra veneriformis exposed to copper (Cu). Experimental period was four weeks. Experimental groups were composed of one control condition and three copper exposure conditions (0.025, 0.050 and 0.100 mg/L). The results of the study confirmed that copper induces reduction of survival rate and respiration rate and histopathology of organ structure of the bivalve. In the copper concentration of 0.100 mg/L, mortality was 100% after Cu exposure of 3 weeks. Respiration rate was observed exposure groups lower than control decline by 75%. Histological analysis of organ system illustrated expansion of hemolymph sinus, disappearance of epidermal layer and degeneration of connective tissue layer of the mantle. Also, histological degenerations as epithelial necrosis and hyperplasia of mucous cells are recognized in the gill and it was observed expansion of hemolymph sinus, disruption of epithelial layer, decrease of mucous cell and degeneration of connective tissue layer in the foot. In the digestive diverticulum, it was showed atrophy of basophilic cell and degeneration of epithelial cell in the digestive tubules, and as the concentration of copper increased the accumulation of lipofuscin increased.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the addition of activated charcoal (AC) and oak charcoal on in vitro ruminal fermentation characteristics, nutrient disappearance, and ruminal gas production. AC and oak charcoal were added at the levels of 0.50, and 1.00 % to experimental diet (roughage/concentrate ratio ; 2/8). Ruminal pH and ammonia-N tended to increase by adding AC(P<0.05). But oak charcoal did not affect the ruminal pH and ammonia-N. Although not significant, ruminal total VFA and molar percentage of butyric acid tended to decrease in AC diets. but molar percentage of acetate and propionate were not affected by adding AC. Ruminal degradation of dry matter, crude protein, NDF, and ADF in AC diets tended to increase than in non-AC diet, however, no tendency in ruminal degradation of hemicellulose was observed. Ruminal gas production tended to increase in the AC and oak charcoal diets(P<0.05). Although there appeared some beneficial effects in adding AC to ruminant diets in this study, more works should be done with AC before we can make clear conclusion on the use of AC in the ruminant diets.
Gel filtration column chromatography (Sephadex G-75), dialysis an d Brushite column chromatography were carried out to separate the brown pigmented macromolecule from water extracts of the cured leaf tobaccos. The two distinct macromolecules having different molecular weight were separated by the Sephadex column chromatography. Brushite also separated two different species of macromolecules which might have different electronic structures. According to the enzymatic degradation of protein in Burley and Hicks, chymotrypsin showed the best degradation ratio, ie., 16-30% in Burley and 38-57% in Hicks. Similar effect was observed with pepsin. However, very low effect of degradation was revealed with trypsin. The sample treated with the proteolytic enzymes revealed the disappearance of the first peak and the slight decrease of the 2nd peak height in the separation profile of Sephadex. After dialysis, the brown pigmented macromolecule was pyrolyzed at $300^{\circ}C$ and the strongly fluorescent components not identified before pyrolysis were detected with TLC separation. Absorption spectrum of these fluorescent compounds was monitored in benzene and the absorption maxima at 265nm and 275 nm were obtained. Considering absorption maxima and shape of the spectrum, those fluorescent compounds seem to be PAH derivatives.
Post-harvest trunk injection of oxytetracycline-HCl(OTC) was attempted for the control of jujube witches'-broom. Diseased jujube(Zizyphus jujuba) trees with 9 to 16cm trunk diameters were treated with OTC ranged from 2g to 6g according to the size of trunk diameter. OTC dissolved in 0.51 or 1.01 of water was transfused into diseased trees by gravity flow injection during September and October. All these OTC concentrations prevented symptom development for two growing seasons and restored previously severely diseased trees to normal conditions. There was no differences in control effect between 0.51 and 1.01 OTC solutions. With these high OTC concentrations, no phytotoxicity was observed in the new leaves of the following year. Mycoplasma -like organism (MLO)-specific fluorescence was absent in the phloem of recovered tissue when examined by fluorescence microscopy using DAPI(4'-6-diamidino-2-phenylindole.2HCl) staining, indicating the disappearance of MLO by the action of OTC.
In order to confirm whether acquired immunity or resistance can be developed by the repeated hookworm infections, the 150 mature actively moving filariform ancylostoma duodenale larvae obtained from the severe hookworm anemia patients were orally given to 8 healthy volunteers in three divided doses, 50 in each, at 5 day interval. Also the hematological changes as well as several ferrokinetics using $^{59}Fe$ were done and were compared with 10 controls. The clinical symptoms and signs were checked every day for the first 3 weeks and then twice weekly until the end of the experiment. The appearance of the ova in the stool was examined by the formalin ether method and the ova was counted by the Stoll's method. The following laboratory tests were done: 1) Red blood cell count, venous blood hematocrit(micromethod), hemoglobin count (cyanomethemoglobin method) were checked every 5 to 7 day interval. 2) Plasma iron concentration (Barkan's modified method) was determined every 2 to 3 week interval. 3) Radioisotope studies: a) Ferrokinetics: Huff et al and Bothwell's method were applied. Erythropoietic Index (% of normal)=$\frac{Subject's\;turnover/100ml\;whole\;blood{\times}100}{Average\;normal\;turnover/100ml\;whole\;blood}$ of the gastrointestinal absorption of iron: Radioiron($^{59}Fe$) balance b) Quantitative measurement method was applied. c) Determination of the plasma erythropoietin activity: Fried's method was applied. Following were the results: 1) The serum iron level was lower. The red cell volume was decreased, but with relative increase of plasma volume. 2) The plasma iron disappearance time was accelerated and the plasma iron turnover rate was decreased. The red cell iron turnover rate was markedly increased, while all of the red cell iron concentration, circulating red cell iron. plasma iron pool were decreased. The daily iron pool turnover and red cell renewal rate were increased. 3) The erythropoietic index, erythropoietin activity and intestinal absorption of iron($^{59}Fe$) were markedly increased. 4) The infectivity was $9.8{\pm}1.31%$ which was lower than that observed in the single infection. 5) From these observations, it is concluded that the hookworm anemia is essentially iron deficieny in its origin and some immunity acquisition is possible with repeated infections.
Although paclitaxel induces apoptosis of cancer cells, its exact mechanism of action is not yet known. The present study has been performed to determine whether influence of paclitaxel in HeLa $S_{3}$ uterine cancer cells. Three assays were employed in this study: cell cytotoxicity, morphological assessments of apoptotic cells (DAPI staining assay), and western blot analysis. The results indicated that paclitaxel has cytotoxic effects in HeLa $S_{3}$ cells. Especially, the $IC_{50}$ value of paclitaxel was about 1 ${\mu}M$. And morphological changes (fragmentation) of cells were observed by paclitaxel in HeLa $S_{3}$ cells. The flow cytometric analysis of paclitaxel-treated cells indicated a block of G2/M phase. The results that pacli-taxel regulates the cell cycle, especially Sub-$G_{1}$ phase. Paclitaxel induces apoptosis of HeLa $S_{3}$ cells via PARP-dependent fashion, and this apoptosis is related to disappearance of Bcl-2 proteins.
The changes of properties were studied for the polypropylene(PP)/Nylon6 blends containing different kinds of compatibilizer made by either reactive extrusion of solution reaction. The compatibilizers were PP grafted with maleic anhydride (MAH) made by reactive extrusion and solution reaction. The grafted MAH contents were 0.3 wt %, and 2.7 wt %, respectively. The composition of the PP/nylon6 blend was fixed at 75/25 by weight. Blending was carried out with twin-screw extruder (L/D=30, ${\psi}=30$) at 300 rpm. As the content of PP-g-MAH was increased, the crystallization peak of Nylon6 decreased gradually then finally disappeared. Disappearance of crystallization peak of Nylon6 was mostly affected by grafted MAH content rather than the preparation method and the amount of compatibilizer. The portion of Nylon6 that could not crystallize in its normal crystallization temperature crystallized together with PP at the crystallization temperature of PP. So called concurrent crystallization was observed. Meanwhile two more peaks were observed during heating cycle. One was exothermic peak at $193^{\circ}C$ near to crystallization temperature of Nylon6, the other was endothermic peak at $215^{\circ}C$ that was $5^{\circ}C$ lower than normal endothermic peak of Nylon6. To analyze the peaks, nylon6 was annealed in the differential scanning calorimeter. As a result, the peak at $193^{\circ}C$ was crystallization peak of imperfect crystalline of Nylon6 and the other peak at $215^{\circ}C$ was melting peak of imperfect crystalline of nylon6.
The effect of earthworm and dung beetle on cattle dung pat decomposition was assessed by combining quantification of earthworm density and with or without dung beetle in pats and measurements of the decomposition rate of these pats. Cattle dung decomposition rate was higher in the pots treated with both earthworm and dung beetle than in the pots with either earthworm or beetle alone. After dung beetle and earthworm activity, the growth of oat in earthworm with dung beetle treatment was similar effect with fertilizer treatment. Dung beetle was responsible for dung decomposition until 78% moisture content in the dung, earthworm was responsible for up to 30% moisture of dung, and two group were not shown any activity for decomposition less 30% moisture content of dung. Therefore dung in the different periods could be broken down by each group. The disappearance and conveyance of dung by earthworm and dung beetle was 72% of the initial dung amount. 10.2% of 72% dung was used making brood balls by dung beetle. Earthworm activity was not an impediment on making brood balls by dung beetles. The interaction of earthworm and dung beetle may have a complementary cooperation rather than competition in the same dung pat. Indeed, development of earthworm accelerate to coexist with dung beetles instead without dung beetles. From this result, maximum benefits of the effective earthworm and dung beetle can be achieved, it is needed to preserve population of earthworm and dung beetles in pasture to sustainable agricultural environment.
Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs and respiratory system and can be classified by a variety of factors such as infectious agents, etiology, infection area, and other criteria. From a 46-year-old male, who was suspected of being infected with atypical pathogen pneumonia and underwent such tests as serological testing, examination of sputum, urine examination, parasite examination, bronchoscopy, needle biopsy and so on, no significant abnormality was found. This patient also showed no specific symptoms like auscultatory abnormalities, high fever, nonproductive cough, muscle stiffness, sputum production, dyspnea. Prescription of broad-spectrum oral antibiotics and ant-parasitic didn't seem to be effective against bacterial and atypical pathogen. The patient's condition alternately repeated between natural cure and recurrence. The average healing process during which scarring, nodule recurrence and disappearance on the lungs happened was about 20 days. Chest radiography and chest high resolution computerized tomographic scans(HRCT scan) was performed to depict parenchymal aberrations and demarcate the extent and distribution of atypical pathogen pneumonia. As a result, chest radiography did not show the specific symptoms, whereas areas of opacity (seen as white) which represent consolidation were revealed in chest HRCT scan. This indicates that only chest radiography is not that useful for early diagnosis of atypical pathogen pneumonia in patients, since it can't show exactly what the symptom is because of the barriers such as diaphragm, liver, and spine. Therefore, it is desirable that chest HRCT should be used in the diagnosis to compare with the results of chest radiography. Here, report with literature investigations the case of recurrent atypical pathogen pneumonia.
