In this study, deepwater design waves were estimated for 16 wave directions and various return periods based on statistical analysis of extreme waves observed for more than 20 years at three stations (Chilbal-do, Geomun-do, Donghae). These values were compared with design waves estimated based on the omni-directional wave data. The Weibull distribution was used as the probability distribution function whose parameters were determined by the least square method. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was applied for the goodness of fit test. Notably, the directional design waves were smaller than the omni-directional design wave for every wave direction. The maximum 50-year wave heights for directional sectors were 7.46 m (NNE), 12.05 m (S), and 9,59 m (SSW) at Chilbal-do, Geomun-do and Donghae whereas those for uni-directional wave data were 7.91 m, 13.82 m and 10.38 m, respectively. This implied possible under-estimation of the deepwater design waves for 16 wave directions being currently used in the design of offshore and coastal structures.

The analytic solution of wave scattering of monochromatic waves on a pile breakwater by an eigenfunction expansion method is extended to the case of directional irregular waves. The scattering wave spectrum and the force spectrum can be expressed from the reflection coefficient, transmission coefficient and the wave forces obtained from changing frequencies and incident angles in monochromatic waves. By numerical integration of 2-dimensional spectrum which is function of frequencies and incident angles, the representative values for the scattered waves and wave forces are obtained and the dependence of the transmission coefficients and wave forces on the directional distribution function, the principal wave direction, the submergence depth, and porosity is analyzed.

In this paper, the 1/4 wavelength backward-wave directional coupler using coupled lines with finite metallization thickness is described. A mode-matching method, simple and fast approach to the quasi-static analysis, has been used to analyse this structure. The numerical results show that it is possible to overcome the disadvantages of weakly coupling, low directivity, and narrow strip distance non-realizable in the case of 1/4 wavelength backward-wave directional coupler with zero thickness conductor. It is also revealed that thicker metallization causes longer coupler length in the case of backward-wave symmetrical parallel coupled line directional coupler. The finite metallization thickness can be a new parameter for tight coupling in the design of backward-wave directional couplers, which enables us to design more accurate properties of monolithic microwave integrated circuits.

Simulation and signal conditioning on the time domain surface elevation records are conducted to verify the proposed Welch's method in non-directional ocean wave spectrum analysis. These spectrum data are further conditioned to provide wave characteristic that better describe the sea states. Comparison of significant wave height and zero crossing period between the proposed method and a reference toolkit are presented.

Hydraulic model experiments were conducted fur a series of regular and uni-directional irregular waves propagating over a submerged elliptic shoal. Two different sets of experiments have been studied; one considers regular wave transformation with no breaking, and the other considers uni-directional irregular wave with partial breaking on top of the shoal. The numerical experiments are also performed using a numerical model based on the parabolic approximation equation. The result of the numerical experiments are compared with that of hydraulic experiments.

This paper presents an analysis of resource assignment for multihop communications in millimeter-wave (mm-wave) wireless personal area networks. The purpose of this paper is to figure out the effect of using directional antennas and relaying devices (DEVs) in communications. The analysis is performed based on a grouping algorithm, categorization of the flows, and the relaying DEV selection policy. Three schemes are compared: direct and relaying concurrent transmission (DRCT), direct concurrent transmission (DCT), and direct nonconcurrent transmission (DNCT). Numerical results show that DRCT is better than DCT and DCT is better than DNCT for any antenna beamwidths under the proposed algorithm and policy. The results also show that using relaying DEVs increases the throughput up to 30% and that there is an optimal beamwidth that maximizes spatial reuse and depends on parameters such as the number of flows in the networks. This analysis can provide guidelines for improving the performance of mm-wave band communications with relaying DEVs.

Omni-directional shear-horizontal magnetostrictive patch transducers have a disadvantage that magnetic flux leakage into the plate when it is installed on a ferromagnetic plate. The leakage produces poor transduction efficiency and unwanted wave mode excitation which should be avoided in guided wave inspections of large plate-like structures. In order to resolve these problems, we newly developed a method to reduce the leakage into the plate. In the method, the patch and the magnet are vertically lifted off and their optimal positions are determined by numerical simulations. Also, the verification of the developed method is successfully verified by experiments.

The neighbor discovery using directional antennas in mmWave band is a prerequisite for communications and this issue is crucial and urgent. In this paper, the synchronized, direct, two-way directional neighbor discovery process is analyzed mathematically for mmWave WPANs. The analysis is based on the values which are derived from the effect of using directional antennas. The neighbor discovery probability for a given amount of time is considered and several performance measures such as the optimal sojourn time are derived in closed forms. Numerical results are obtained using parameters based on the IEEE 802.15.3c. The mathematical analysis provides the theoretical basis for the directional neighbor discovery process.

In this paper, statistical properties of waves in the sea area of Mara-do, Korea are examined based on 1998-1999's wave data from a directional wave buoy which is located in Mara-do. Wave data aquisition rate, monthly maximium, minimum and mean wave heights, frequency of wave direction are summarized. Wave height and period scatter diagrams and n-year return period wave heights are estimated. Wave periods of maximum wave heights are also estimated.

In this paper, The statistical properties of ocean waves in the sea area of Hong-do, Korea are examined based on 1998-2002's wave data from a directional wave buoy. Wave data aquisition rate, mean wave heights, frequency of wave direction are summarized. Wave height and period scatter diagrams and n-years return period wave heights are estimated. Wave periods of maximum wave heights are also estimated. Large amplitude wave characteristics during the typhoon Prapiroon in 2000, Rusa in 2002 are also examined.
