  • An asymmetrical directional coupler with two nonidentical fibers has, for the first time, been proposed and analyzed for an EDFA gain flattening filter (GFF). The characteristics of the transmission spectra of the GFFs have been theoretically investigated for the core spacings, the coupling lengths and the fiber parameters of the asymmetrical directional coupler. The analytical results show that an EDFA gain spectrum with flatness of ~7 ㏈ can be flattened to within $\pm$0.75 ㏈ over a bandwidth of 30 nm by using the asymmetrical directional coupler-based GFF.

  • The wireless transmission medium inherently broadcasts a signal to all neighbor nodes in the transmission range. Existing asynchronous MAC protocols do not provide a concrete solution for reliable broadcast in link layer. This mainly comes from that an omni-directional broadcasting causes to reduce the network performance due to the explosive collisions and contentions. This paper proposes a reliable broadcast protocol in link taller based on directional antennas, named MDB(MAC protocol for Directional Broadcasting). This protocol makes use of DAST(Directional Antennas Statement Table) information and D-MACA(Directional Multiple Access and Collision Avoidance) scheme through 4-way handshake to resolve the many collision problem wit]1 omni-directional antenna. To analyze its performance, MDB protocol is compared with IEEE 802.11 DCF protocol [9] and the protocol 2 of reference [3], in terms of the success rate of broadcast and the collision rate. As a result of performance analysis through simulation, it was confirmed that the collision rate of the MDB protocol is lower than those of IEEE 802.11 and the protocol 2 of reference [3], and that the completion rate of broadcast of MDB protocol is higher than those of IEEE 802.11 and the protocol 2 of reference [3].

  • Optical wavelength filters based on directional couplers are rigorously designed and analyzed by Modal Transmission-Line Theory (MTLT). The conventional parallel directional coupler is utilized to implement a narrow-band filter, and it takes up the coupler with tapered structure as a wide-band filter. The power transfers of TE/TM modes in narrow-band filters are maximized at ${\lambda}=1.303{\mu}m\;and\;1.1496{\mu}m$, and the optical bandwidths are then 30nm and 10nm, respectively. Furthermore, when the coupling lengths of TE/TM modes in wide-band filters operating at ${\lambda}=1.55{\mu}m$ are selected as $183{\mu}m\;and\;178{\mu}m$, those are operated as the stop-band and pass-band filters, respectively.

  • Directional MAC protocols have drawn great attentions recently in super high speed wireless local/personal area networks due to their higher antenna gain, better spatial reuse, longer transmission range, and lower interference. Despite of these merits, directional MAC protocols suffer from deafness problem. The deafness problem occurs if a node does not answer an RTS frame addressed to it. To overcome this problem, directional MAC protocols have aimed at avoiding the deafness problem using multiple control frames or advance notice techniques or distinguishing deafness from collision. In this paper, we analyze the performance of these schemes in deafness environments with some scenarios. Through performance analysis, we compare the performance of these schemes through evaluating actual network throughput.

  • In this paper, we extracted design parameters for re-entrant mode microstrip directional coupler using FE(finite element) calculations. The microstrip directional coupler suffers from a poor directivity due to effect of the inhomogeneous dielectric including both dielectric substrate and air in microstrip transmission lines. Thus, the phase velocity of even mode is not equal to that of odd mode. In order to improve the directivity of microstrip directional coupler, a novel re-entrant mode microstrip directional coupler was employed. In microstrip configuration, the high directivity can be reached by matching the even- and odd-mode effective phase velocities. Through the values of capacitance obtained from 2-dimensional FE calculations, the phase velocities for each mode and the design parameter were extracted for the proposed parallel coupled-line configuration. Based on the extracted design parameter with phase matching condition, we designed and fabricated a 30dB directional coupler at 0.85GHz. Experimental results show good performance with excellent, isolation and directivity.

Existing asynchronous MAC protocols do not provide a concrete solution for reliable broadcast in link layer. This mainly comes from that an omnidirectional broadcasting causes to reduce the network performance due to the explosive collisions and contentions. To analyze its performance, MNDB protocol si compared with $RMDB^{[1]}$, the protocol 2 of reference [3], and IEEE 802.11 $protocol^{[9]}$, in terms of the number of collisions, the number of dropped packets, the number of redundant packets, and broadcast delay.

  • The demands for the various type of directional coupler, which is for the sampling of the signal levels in mobile communication baseband or transceiver systems, are growing. The proposed dual directional coupler, which has three parallel coupled transmission lines, can provide the dual coupling and good isolation characteristics between the coupling ports. In this paper, the novel analysis method and the design equation of even and odd mode for the dual directional coupler, which is employing the asymmetrically coupled transmission lines, are proposed. Using the proposed method, the dual directional coupler for PCS system has been designed and fabricated. We obtained the desired coupling value and the high directivity of 40dB. Measured results show the validity of this design method.

  • A significant new technique in the dsvelopment of micro-wave circuits is the process of untilization of coupled lines in the transverse electro-magnetic field. The bases for this technique are the application of even-and odd-mode characteristic impedances of the transmission line. This article describes the properties of directional couplers and explains a prccfdure usrd to design micro-strip directional couplers with the aid of the computer. The article also describes the experimental results obtained from seven microstrip couplers, which were built to verify the computer program and the approximate solutions. It can be seen that in cases at X-band where couplings of 10 to 20dB are required, the computer program and approximate solutions will produce good results.

  • The relation of multicast transmission and directional antennas is an open problem that has been debated for a long period of time. In this paper, we propose a group-aware multicast scheme of efficient multicast communication using the directional antennas for 60GHz millimeter wave wireless networks. For this purpose, we first derive the relation among beamwidth, distance between devices and most suitable data rate in the 60GHz frequency-based wireless network. In addition, for the dynamic beamforming of multicast communication, the x and y coordinates of any point with sender device at the center is generated, and a best-chosen group is deduced based on the Euclidean distance. Then the most suitable data rate for the group is obtained using the law of cosine. Using the Standard IEEE 802.11ad MAC protocol as an example, extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms the existing multicast communication schemes with directional antennas under different situations.

  • In this paper, the directional carrier sense multiple access/collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) protocol in the immediate acknowledgement mode for IEEE 802.15.3c is analyzed under saturation environments. For the analysis, a sensing region and an exclusive region with a directional antenna are computed probabilistically and a Markov chain model in which the features of IEEE 802.15.3c and the effects of using directional antennas are incorporated is analyzed. An algorithm to find the maximal number of concurrently transmittable frames is proposed. The system throughput and the average transmission delay are obtained in closed forms. The numerical results show the impact of directional antennas on the CSMA/CA media access control (MAC) protocol. For instance, the throughput with a small beamwidth of antenna is more than ten times larger than that for an omnidirectional antenna. The overall analysis is verified by a simulation. The obtained results will be helpful in developing an MAC protocol for enhancing the performance of mmWave wireless personal area networks.
