  • An accurate determination of turbulent fluxes over an urban area is a challenging task due to its morphological diversity and associated flow complexity. In this study, an eddy covariance (EC) method is applied over a highly heterogeneous urban area in a small city (Gongju), South Korea to investigate the quantitative influence of 'coordinate tilt' in determining the turbulent fluxes of sensible heat, latent heat, momentum, and carbon dioxide mass. Two widely-used coordinate transform methods are adopted and applied to eight directional sections centered on the site to analyze a 1-year period EC measurement obtained from the urban site: double rotation (DR) and planar fit (PF) transform. The results show that mean streamline planes determined by the PF method are distinguished from the sections, representing morphological heterogeneity of the site. The sectional pitch angles determined by the DR method also compare well with those in the PF method. Both the PF and DR methods show large variabilities in the determined streamline planes at each directional section, implying that flow patterns may form in a complicate way due to the surface heterogeneity. Resulting relative differences of the turbulent fluxes, defined by $(F_{DR}-F_{PF})/F_{DR}$, are found on average +13% in sensible heat flux, +21% in latent heat flux, +37% in momentum flux, and +26% in carbon dioxide mass flux, which are larger values than those reported previously for fairly homogeneous natural sites. The fractional differences depend significantly on wind direction, showing larger differences in northerly winds at the measurement site. It is also found that the relative fractional differences are negatively correlated with the mean wind speed at both stable/unstable atmospheric conditions. These results imply that EC turbulent fluxes determined over heterogeneous urban areas should be carefully interpreted with considering the uncertainty due to 'coordinate tilt' effect in their applications.

  • Even after establishment of H.264/AVC standard, the video coding experts group (VCEG) of ITU-T has researched on development of promising coding techniques to increase coding efficiency based on the key technology area (KTA) software. Recently, the joint collaboration team video coding (JCT-VC) which was composed of the VCEG and the motion picture experts group (MPEG) of ISO/IEC is developing a next-generation video standard namely HEVC intended to gain twice efficiency than H.264/AVC. An adaptive interpolation technique, one of various next-generation techniques, reported higher coding efficiency. However, it has high computational complexity and does not deal with various error characteristics for videos. In this paper, we investigate characteristics of interpolation filters and propose an effective fixed interpolation filter bank including diverse properties of error. Experimental results is shown that the proposed method achieved bitrate reduction by 0.7% and 1.3% compared to fixed directional interpolation filter (FDIF) of the KTA and the directional interpolation filter (DIF) of the HEVC test model, respectively.

  • This paper proposes a novel lossless image compression scheme composed of direction-adaptive prediction and context-based entropy coding. In the prediction stage, we analyze the directional property with respect to the current coding pixel and select an appropriate prediction pixel. In order to further reduce the prediction error, we propose a prediction error compensation technique based on the context model defined by the activities and directional properties of neighboring pixels. The proposed scheme applies a context-based Golomb-Rice coding as the entropy coding since the coding efficiency can be improved by using the conditional entropy from the viewpoint of the information theory. Experimental results indicate that the proposed lossless image compression scheme outperforms the low complexity and high efficient JPEG-LS in terms of the coding efficiency by 1.3% on average for various test images, specifically for the images with a remarkable direction the proposed scheme shows better results.

  • In this paper, we proposed an effective hardware structure using DCT-based inra-prediction mode selection to reduce computational complexity caused by intra mode decision. In this hardware structure, the input block is transformed at first and then analyzed to determine its texture directional tendency. the complexity has solved by performing intra prediction in only predicted edge direction. $4{\times}4$ DCT is calculated in one cycle using Multitransform_PE and Inta_pred_PE calculates one prediction mode in two cycles. Experimental results show that the proposed Intra prediction encoding needs only 517 cycles for one macroblock encoding. This architecture improves the performance by about 17% than previous designs. For hardware implementation, the proposed intra prediction encoder is implemented using Verilog HDL and synthesized with Megnachip $0.18{\mu}m$ standard cell library. The synthesis results show that the proposed architecture can run at 125MHz.

  • Currently, H.264/AVC is used in many multimedia applications. Also, The MPEG-2 main profile which supports B pictures for bi-directional motion prediction is widely used in applications such as HDTV and DVD’s. Therefore, transcoding the MPEG-2 main profile to the H.264/AVC baseline is necessary for universal multimedia access. In this transcoding architecture including the GOP structure conversion, the proposed algorithms adopt the adaptive search range selection through the linearity test of a predictive motion vector and adaptive mode selection using the reference region complexity information. The proposed algorithms extremely reduce the computational complexity while maintaining the video quality.

  • HEVC is the latest joint video coding standard with ITU-T SG16 WP and ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG11. Its coding efficiency is about two times compared to H.264 high profile. Intra prediction has 35 directional modes including dc and planer. However an accurate mode decision on lots of modes with SSE is too costly to implement it with hardware. The key idea of this paper is a DCT shared architecture to reduce the complexity of HEVC intra encoder. It is to use same DCT block to quantize as well as to calculate SSE in RDO. The proposed intra encoder uses two step mode decision to lighten complexity with simplified RDO blocks and shares the transform resources. Its BD-rate increase is negligible at 20% on hardware aspect and the operating clock frequency is 300MHz@60fps on FHD ($1920{\times}1080$) image.

  • In this paper. we propose an efficient method for implementing hi-directional pixel-based focusing(BiPBF) based on a sparse array imaging technique. The proposed method can improve spatial resolution and frame rate of ultrasound imaging with reduced hardware complexity by synthesizing transmit apertures with a small number of sparsely distributed subapertures. As the distance between adjacent subapertures increases, however. the image resolution tends to decrease due to the elevation of grating lobes. Such grating lobes can be eliminated in conventional synthetic aperture imaging techniques. On the contrary, grating lobes arisen from employing sparse synthetic transmit apertures can not be eliminated, which has been shown analytically in this paper. We also propose the condition and method for suppressing the grating lobes below -40dB, which is generally required in practical imaging. by placing the transmit focal depth at a near depth and properly selecting the subaperture distance in Proportion to receive aperture size. The results of both the Phantom and in vivo experiments show that the proposed method implements two-wav dynamic focusing using a smaller number of subapertures, resulting in reduced system complexity and increased frame rate.

  • A walking navigation system (usually known as a locomotion interface) is an interactive platform which gives simulated walking sensation to users using sensed bipedal motion signals. This enables us to perform navigation tasks using only bipedal movement. Especially, it is useful for the certain VR task which emphasizes on physical human movement, or accompanies understanding of the size and complexity of building structures. In this work, we described system components of VR walking system and investigated several types of walking platform by literature survey. We adopted a MS Kinect depth sensor for the motion recognition and a treadmill which includes directional turning mechanism for the walking platform. Through the integration of these components with a VR navigation scenario, we developed a simple VR walking navigation system. Finally several technical issues were found during development process, and further research directions were suggested for the system improvement.

  • Various mixed-use buildings have been developed in the process of resolving the issue of 'urban regeneration' in the modern city. In this urban regeneration process, the size of the mixed-use buildings and the level of their functional complexity have been increased. It requires a quantitative and systematic approach in order to analyze the internal circulation flow within the large-scale commercial mixed-use buildings. Circulation system and environmental factors, respectively, have been vital criteria for the effectiveness of a Wayfinding design within the mixed-use buildings. The circulation system in this paper consists of 1) the number of the incoming paths at each node, and 2) the angle of directional transition from the incoming paths at the node. The environmental factors include 1) color tone, 2) materials, 3) lighting, and 4) pattern of the interior design of the mixed-use buildings. In this paper, the author develops a method of investigating the influence of the correlation between the circulation system and the environmental factors on the design of Wayfinding on the view of the remodeled COEX MALL interior design.

  • The complexity, enlargement and irregularity of structures and multi-directional dynamic loads acting on the structures can lead to unexpected structural behavior, such as torsion. Continuous torsion of the structure causes unexpected changes in the structure's stress distribution, reduces the performance of the structural members, and shortens the structure's lifespan. Therefore, a method of monitoring the torsional behavior is required to ensure structural safety. Structural torsion typically occurs accompanied by displacement, but no model has yet been developed to measure this type of structural response. This research proposes a model for measuring dynamic torsional response of structure accompanied by displacement and for identifying the torsional modal parameter using vision-based displacement measurement equipment, a motion capture system (MCS). In the present model, dynamic torsional responses including pure rotation and translation displacements are measured and used to calculate the torsional angle and displacements. To apply the proposed model, vibration tests for a shear-type structure were performed. The torsional responses were obtained from measured dynamic displacements. The torsional angle and displacements obtained by the proposed model using MCS were compared with the torsional response measured using laser displacement sensors (LDSs), which have been widely used for displacement measurement. In addition, torsional modal parameters were obtained using the dynamic torsional angle and displacements obtained from the tests.
