Direct simple shear test is an effective method to measure strength and deformation properties of soil. However, existing direct simple shear apparatus have some shortcomings. The paper has developed a novel dual stress/strain-controlled direct simple shear apparatus. The novel apparatus has the following advantages: A rectangular specimen is used that effectively avoid common issues associated with conventional cylindrical specimens, such as specimen tilting. The utilization of deformation control rods ensures a uniform shear deformation of the specimen. Vertically integrated force transmission structure is improved that avoids issues arising from changes in pivot points due to lever tilting. Incorporating this novel direct simple shear apparatus, shear strength and shear creep tests of clay were performed. Shear strength parameters and shear creep behaviors are analyzed. The results of these experiments show that the novel apparatus can measure accurately the shear rheological properties of soil. This study provides strong guidance for studying the mechanical properties of soil in engineering practice.
A direct shear test is classified roughly by one side simple shear test of confining horizontal displacement type and torsional shear test of non-confining one. Direct shear test that has been widely used so far has some problems with test apparatus, testing and the analysis, and in particular that its strength value is everestimated in sandy soils. Also, progressive failure of shearing process happens from shear apparatus restriction and because the shear strain and shear stress are erratic in specimen, we can not define the shear strain value. In the meantime, a simple shear test having advantage of direct shear test is an ideal test method that can get stress-strain relation on shear because it can deliver constant shearing deformation to specimen. However, simple shear test cannot be used practically, because its structure makes tester manufacturing difficult. This paper described a on outline of test apparatus, improvement of test method, and constant pressure test results based on the obtained from improved direct shear apparatus and the standardization of JGS soil testing method.

It is very difficult to prepare a lab. test specimen from weak rock masses affected by faults, highly fractured zone or weathered zone. In conventional method of in situ direct shear test a rock block is sheared inside galleries, where reactions for the hydraulic jacks are available. A new in situ direct shear test apparatus has been developed in this study to perform the test inside galleries as well as open pit conditions. The apparatus is composed of normal and shear reaction plates including load transfer plates, hydraulic cylinder systems, load cells, multistage shear boxes with fixing devices, and needle rollers. Maximum size of the test block is $400{\times}400{\times}460$ mm, and procedures of the test block preparation has been suggested. To explore the field applicability of in situ direct shear test apparatus, proper test block site was investigated by extensive geological field survey. In situ direct shear test has been successful in producing most of information related to strength and deformability of the weak rock.
Shear behavior obtained by direct shear tests is dependent on shear box and boundary condition. The objective of this study is to analyze problems of conventional direct shear test (type-A) and provide the reliable results by developing type-C direct shear apparatus. Experimental tests are carried out for Ulleung sand by using type-A and -C direct shear devices. The soil specimens, which are prepared at the relative density of 60%, and are applied to vertical confining stresses of 50, 100, 200, 300, and 400 kPa, are sheared at a constant shear strain rate of 0.5 mm/min. By comparing the results obtained by type-A and -C direct shear apparatus under constant normal load (CNL) condition, the performance of new one is verified. In addition, two constrained conditions including constant normal load (CNL) and constant pressure (CP) are applied to type-C one. Experimental results show that type-A direct shear apparatus has some problems such as rotating of loading plate and upper shear box, and the frictional forces between soil and inner wall of upper shear box. Thus, the shear strengths obtained by type-A device are overestimated or underestimated depending on shear box and boundary condition. On the other hand, type-C device produces clear and consistent test results regardless of constrained conditions. This study represents that type-C direct shear apparatus not only can solve the problems of type-A direct shear apparatus but provide the reliable results.
This paper presents the results of an intensive experimental investigation on cyclic behavior of various sands and structural materials interface. Comprehensive measurements of the horizontal displacement and shear stresses developed during testing were performed using an automated constant normal load (CNL) cyclic direct shear test apparatus. Two different particle sizes (0.5 mm-0.25 mm and, 2.0 mm-1.0 mm) of sands having distinct shapes (rounded and angular) were tested in a cyclic direct shear testing apparatus at two vertical stress levels (${\sigma}=50kPa$, and 100 kPa) and two rates of displacement ($R_D=2.0mm/min$, and 0.025 mm/min) against various structural materials (i.e., steel, concrete, and wood). The cyclic direct shear tests performed during this investigation indicate that (i) the shear stresses developed during shearing highly depend on both the shape and size of sand grains; (ii) characteristics of the structural materials are closely related to interface response; and (iii) the rate of displacement is slightly effective on the results.
Since the particle sizes of the coarse materials used in dam or harbor constructions are much larger than those of typical soils, it is desirable that large shear testing apparatuses are used when performing shear tests on the coarse materials to obtain as accurate results as possible. Two large-scale shear testing apparatuses, large direct shear testing apparatus and large triaxial shear testing apparatus, are commonly used. Currently in Korea, however, there have not been many cases in which shear tests were done using the large apparatus due to mainly difficulties in manufacturing, diffusing, and operating them. In present study, both large direct shear tests and large triaxial shear tests were performed on the coarse materials, which are used as dam fill materials, for 6 test cases in which particle sizes, specimen sizes, vertical pressure (confining pressure) conditions were little different, and then, the shear strength characteristics of the materials were compared with the two different shear tests. The test results showed that, by the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, overall the shear strength obtained by the large direct shear tests was larger than that by the large triaxial shear tests. Moreover, the shear strength under the normal stress of 1,000 kPa was about 10 to 70% larger for the large direct shear tests than for the large triaxial shear tests, revealing the larger differences in the coarse materials, compared to typical soils.

When a nail pulled out in dense, granular soil, the soil in the vicinity of the nail tends to dilate, but its dilatancy results in a normal stress concentration at the soil/nail interface, thereby increasing the pull-out resistance of the inclusion. It is thought to be occurring within the resistance zone where the soil mass is at stationary state and the reinforcement are held in position by the soil, due to the friction or bond. In this paper, A series of direct shear and interface tests were conducted by using so called‘Constant Normal Stiffness Test Apparatus’which was modified and improved from the conventional direct shear box test rig. Unlikely the normal shear box test, this enables to simulate the different constraint effects of surrounding soil during shear under the conditions of constant stress and volume, constant normal stiffness. The aim of the research programme is to get better understanding of pull-out bond mechanism, thus to explore the possibility of evaluating the pull-out bond capacity of soil/reinforcement at the preliminary design stage from the laboratory test.
As the behavior of the debris flow due to the torrential rains in mountain is affected by shear strength and rheological properties of the fine fraction in the ground, the evaluation of both properties is necessary to estimate the behavior of the debris flow. The objective of this study is to evaluate the shear strength and rheological properties using the direct shear apparatus. The direct shear tests are conducted for two kinds of fine-grained soil specimens, which are in dry state and liquid limit state. From the direct shear tests, shear strengths are measured according to the normal stresses applied on the specimens to evaluate the cohesion and internal friction angle. In addition, reversal shear tests are performed for the fine-grained soil specimens in liquid limit state according to the shear rate to evaluate the residual shear strength. The results of direct shear tests show that the specimen at the liquid limit state has lower internal friction angle and higher cohesion compared to the dry stated, and the residual friction angle and cohesion at the residual state are lower than those at the peak state. In the result of reversal shear test, the residual shear strength is directly proportional to the shear rate and viscosity is calculated as $73.60Pa{\cdot}s$. This study demonstrates that the direct shear apparatus can be effectively used for the evaluation of the shear strength and rheological properties of the fine-grained soils related with the debris flow.

Shear properties of plastic bottle film/plastic bottle film and plastic bottle film/granitic soil which were evaluated from static friction tests. The monotonic shear experiments were performed by using an tilt table apparatus and large direct shear device. The test results showed that the friction angle of each interface and the interface depended on the amount of normal stress, the type of the interface used. Therefore, the testing method should be determined carefully by considering the type of loads and normal stress expected in the field with using the materials installed in the site.

In this research, the shear behavior of four different interfaces consisting of 4 types of geosynthetics was examined, and both static and dynamic tests for the geosynthetic interface were conducted. The monotonic shear experiments were performed by using an inclined board apparatus and large direct shear device. The interface shear strength obtained from the inclined board tests were compared with those calculated from large direct shear tests. The comparison results indicated that direct shear tests are likely to overestimate the shear strength in low normal stress range where direct shear tests were not performed. Curved failure envelopes were also obtained for interface cases where two static shear tests were conducted. By comparing the friction angles measured from three tests, i.e. direct shear, inclined board, and shaking table tests, it was found that the friction angle might be different depending on the test method and normal stresses applied in this research. Therefore, it was concluded that the testing method should be determined carefully by considering the type of loads and the normal stress expected in the field.
