  • This paper focuses on a simple technique to reduced torque ripple in the direct torque control inverter for PMSM drive. It is actually impossible to raise the inverter switching frequency in the conventional system, although the hysterisis bandwidths for the stator flux and torque control are sufficiently diminished, because of the sampling Interval and the delay in estimating the flux and the torque In order to overcome the problem, the proposed method introduces a dithering technique into the conventional system by superposing triangular waves with high frequency and minute amplitude on the torque error. And the programable 3- stage lowpass filter is added instead of pure Integrator. Simulation results prove the feasibility of proposed strategy compared with conventional method.

  • Anaerobically grown cells of an Fe(III)-reducing bacterium, Shewanella putrefaciens IR-l, were electrochemically active with an apparent reduction potential of about 0.15 V against a saturated calomel electrode in the cyclic voltammetry. The bacterium did not grow fermentatively on lactate, but grew in an anode compartment of a three-electrode electrochemical cell using lactate as an electron donor and the electrode as the electron acceptor. This property was shared by a large number of Fe(III)-reducing bacterial isolates. This is the first observation of a direct electrochemical reaction by an intact bacterial cell, which is believed to be possible due to the electron carrier(s) located at the cell surface involved in the reduction of the natural water insoluble electron acceptor, Fe(III).

  • In this paper, a method for reduction of spurious signal in Digital RF Memory(DRFM) is proposed. Spurious response is a major performance issue of DRFM. This method is based on mixing a random phase LO signal into input IF signal and sampling it. The random phase LO signal is generated by high speed phase shifting characteristic of Direct Digital Synthesizer(DDS). Through this technique, we achieved an enhancement of 5~10 dB of spurious response.

  • Direct numerical simulations were performed to investigate the physics of a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer flow subjected to spanwise oscillating electromagnetic forces in the near wall region. A fully implicit fractional step method was employed to simulate the flow. The mean flow properties and the Reynolds stresses were obtained to analyze the near-wall turbulent structure. It is found that skin friction and turbulent kinetic energy can be reduced by the electromagnetic forces. The decrease in production is responsible fur the reduction of turbulent kinetic energy. Instantaneous flow visualization techniques were used to observe the response of streamwise vortices and streak structures to spanwise oscillating forces. The near-wall vortical structures are affected by spanwise oscillating electromagnetic forces. Following the stopping of the electromagnetic force, the flow eventually relaxes back to a two-dimensional equilibrium boundary layer.

  • The direct injection diesel engine is one of the most efficient thermal engines. For this reason DI diesel engines are widely used for heavy-duty applications. But the world is faced with very serious problems related to the air pollution due to the exhaust emissions of diesel engine. So, that is air pollution related to exhaust gas resulted from explosive combustion should be improved. Exhaust Gas Recirculation(EGR) is a proven method to reduce NOx emissions. In this study, the experiments-were performed at various engine loads while the EGR rates were set from 0% to 20%. The emissions trade-off and combustion of diesel engine are investigated. Hot and cooled EGR are achieved without cooling and with cooling respectively. It was found that the exhaust emissions with the EGR system resulted in a very large reduction in oxides of nitrogen at the expense of higher smoke emissions. Also, the reduction rates of NOx emissions for hot and cooled EGR are similar at load 20%.

  • Recently much research efforts have focused on how to manage carbon emissions in logistics operations. This paper formulates a model to determine an optimal shipment size with aims to minimize the total cost consisting not only of inventory and transportation costs but also cost for carbon emissions. Unlike the literature assuming carbon emission factors as a given condition, we consider the emission factors as decision variables. It is allowed to make an investment in improving carbon emission factors. The optimal investment decision is shown to be of a threshold type with respect to unit investment costs. Moreover, the findings in this work provide insights on the various elements of the investment decision and their impacts.

  • The tone reservation method is one of the most effective pre-distortion methods for peak-to-average power ratio reduction in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Its direct application to OFDM systems with offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OQAM) is, however, not effective. In this paper, two novel TR-based methods are proposed, specifically designed for OFDM/OQAM systems by taking into consideration the overlapping nature of OQAM signals. These two methods have different approaches to the generation of the peak-cancelling signal. The first one (overlapped scaling tone reservation) generates the peak-cancelling signal using a least squares approximation algorithm with possible adjacent symbol overlap; the second one (multi-kernel tone reservation) generates the peak-cancelling signal by using multiple impulse-like time domain kernels. It is shown by simulation that, when used in OFDM/OQAM systems, the proposed methods can provide better performance than the direct application of the existing controlled clipping tone reservation method, and even outperform the multi-block tone reservation method.

  • In this paper, an advanced torque control scheme of Switched Reluctance Motor(SRM) using modified non-linear logical TSF (Torque Sharing Function) with PWM is presented. In the proposed control scheme, a simple calculation of PWM duty ratio and switching rules from DITC(Direct Instantaneous Torque Control) can reduce the torque ripple with fixed switching frequency. The proposed control scheme is verified by the computer simulations and experimental results.

  • In Part I, we extended the capability of the Goore Scheme for application to multi-dimensional problems and improved convergence performance. In this paper, we apply the improved Goore Scheme to th e control of turbulence for drag reduction. Direct numerical simulations combined with the control scheme are carried out to simulate a controlled turbulent channel flow at low Reynolds number. The wall blowing and suction is applied through the Goore algorithm using the total drag as feedback. An optimum distribution of the wall blowing and suction in terms of the wall-shear stresses in the spanwise and streamwise directions is sought. The best case reduces drag by more than 20 %.

  • We investigate the possibility of application of the Goore Scheme to turbulence control for drag reduction. In Part I, we examine the performance of the original Goore Scheme by applying it to a si mple one-dimensional problem. For the application of the scheme to turbulence control, we extend the scheme's capability so that it can treat multi-dimensional problems and examine its validity theoretically. The convergence of the extended scheme with a dynamic memory is faster by an order of magnitude than the original scheme. In Part II, we apply the proposed scheme to reduce drag for turbulent channel flows through direct numerical simulation.
