  • Aluminum doped zinc oxide (AZO) thin films have been prepared on the glass substrates (Corning 1737) by sol-gel dip-coating method employing zinc acetate and aluminum chloride hexahydrate for the transparent conducting oxide (TCO) applications. 1 at% Al was doped to the ZnO thin films. The effects of post-heating temperature on the crystallization, optical and electrical properties of the AZO films have been investigated. Experimental results showed that post-heating temperature affected the microstructure, electrical resistance, and optical transmittance of the AZO films. From the X-ray diffraction analysis, all films have hexagonal wurtzite crystal structure. Optical transmittance spectra of the AZO films exhibited transmittance higher than about 80% within the visible wavelength region and the optical direct band gap ($E_g$) of these films was increased with increasing post-heating temperature. A minimum resistivity of $2.5{\times}10^{-3}{\Omega}cm$ was observed at $650^{\circ}C$.

  • Sol-gel derived silica films were prepared by dip-coating onto polymethylmethacylate with Tetraethoxysilane(TEOS) as starting materials. Film properties such as viscosity and thickness were investigated as a function of dip speed, waterprecursor ratio, sol aging time. IR spectra of the gel films prepared from TEOS at various R are given. At small values of R the absorption peaks assignable to C-H vibration in $-OC_2H_5$ groups are observed around 3000 and 1500-1300 $cm^{-1}$. These bands indicate that the -$-OC_2H_5$ groups are retained in the gel at small values of R because of incomplete hydrolysis of TEOS. Film behaviour was interpreted in terms of the dependence of hydrolysis and condensation rates on the interplay between sol pH and waterprecursor ratio. Film thickness was found to increase by approximately a factor of two as waterprecursor ratio increased from two to six. Film thickness also increased with sol prepolymerization time. Surface quality was correlated with processing conditions.

  • The "pseudo-wedge" failure is a name for a complex instability occurring at the Sarcheshmeh open-pit mine (Iran). The pseudo-wedge failure contains both the rock bridge failure and sliding along pre-existing discontinuities. In this paper, a cross section of the failure area was first modeled using a bonded-particle method. The results indicated development of tensile cracks at the slope toe which explains the freedom of pseudo-wedge blocks to slide. Then, a three-dimensional discrete element method was used to perform a block analysis of the instability. The technique of shear strength reduction was used to calculate the factor of safety. Finally, the influence of geometrical characteristics of the mine wall on the pseudo-wedge failure was investigated. The safety factor significantly increases as the dip and dip direction of the wall decrease, and reaches an acceptable value with a 10-degree decrease of them.

  • This paper presetns new design of the Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition(MCVD) system for optical fiber preform fabrication. It contains a glass working lathe, raw material supplier and exhaust gas treatment apparatus as fundamental instruments for MCVD process, graded index fiber design, characteristic of process and the experimenta arrangement to measure the refractive index profile of MCVD preforms, respectively. From the investigation results, it is shown that an ideal graded index fiber preform does not exhibit a center dip or bump.

  • Estimation of durability for corrugated steel pipe(CSP) has been evaluated by using several analytical methods. This study, using a plain hot-dip galvanized CSP as the base line, addresses additional coatings such as polymers sand bituminous coatings that may be used to achieve a desired design life of at least 50years. The behavior of both the soil side and the effluent side of the pipe have been studied. It is estimated that CSP generally provides outstanding dura-bility with regard to soil side effects, and that virtually any required service life can be attained by selecting appropri-ate coatingss and/or thickness of steel substrate. This study is limited to storm drainage systemss carrying naturally oc-curring surface water only. The recommendation in this report do not apply to sanitary or industrial waste sewers or other conduits used to carry corrosive effluents.

  • Zinc phosphating for cold forming of steel was studied with emphasis on decreasing phosphating temperature. To lower phosphating temperature, some techniques, such as adding Cu ion into bath, using activator in the form of pre-dip, and aeration in bath, instead of using conventional accelerator, namely oxidizing agent, have been tried. It was revealed that phosphating, leading to coatings of Improved uniformity and fine crystal size, can be carried out using above techniques at lower temperature ($55^{\circ}C$) compared to conventional phosphating temperature ($80 ~ 90^{\circ}C$ ). Under present condition, it was seen that optimum concentrations of Cu ion in phosphating bath and activator in pre-dip are 0.015% (w/w) and 2.0 g/1, respectively. The coating weight was within the range of 15 ~ 20 g/$\m^2$. When lubricant was applied into phosphating coatings, the amount of lubricating component (total soap) was found to be 6 ~ 10 g/$\m^2$ and the lubricated panel revealed excellent lubricating properties.

  • The Sound reduction indices(SRIs) of interior door with 13 different size apertures are measured in acoustic chamber. Also, as a theoretical approach, the SRIs are estimated using Gomperts' theory. In this study, the aperture of interior door is focused on the lower part of door leaf which is well known as a main cause to deteriorate the sound insulation performance of door. The results show that the SRI of door strongly depends on the aperture width and the dip in the measured sound reduction index curve by the resonance effect within aperture is observed at high-frequency. On the whole, the values calculated by theory are in good agreement with the measured values including the position of resonance dip. The average difference between the measured and the calculated values is 0.9 dB for 13 doors with different size aperture in terms of the weighted SRI.

  • A new monitoring system has been developed for in-situ and realtime measurement of ozone transport in unsaturated porous media using a fiber optic sensor. The calibration of the fiber optic transflection dip probe (FOTDP) system was successfully carried out at various ozone concentrations using a column with length of 30 cm and diameter of 5 cm packed with glass beads, which don't react with gaseous ozone. The breakthrough curves (BTCs) of ozone was obtained by converting the normalized intensity into ozone concentration. The FOTDP system reflected the ideal transport phenomena of gas phase ozone at various flow rates. The FOTDP system worked well for in-situ monitoring of gas phase ozone at various water saturations and in presence of SOM. However, the FOTDP system did not measure the ozone concentration at more than 70% water saturation.

  • An Interpretation technique is presented to determine strike, dip, velocity and depth of 3-D planar layers from refraction or reflection traveltime curve. This interpretation technique determines the direction of emerging ray from the slope of the traveltime curve and traces the emerging ray to the refractor or reflector. The ray direction in the last layer is used to decide the normal vector to the refractor or reflector from whick its dip, strike and velocity are calculated. The vertical depth to the refractor or reflector is computed by using the intercept or zero-offset time and the ray direction in each layer. Some tests on the interpretation method are performed for the sysnthetic traveltimes generated in 3-D model layers and show that the paramerters of the model layers are accurately determined.

  • Gas wiping of continuously hot-dip galvanized coating on steel strip has generated edge overcoating and noise problems. The overcoating of zinc in the edge zone from edge to 50mm inside of the strip along its width was measured and analyzed. The overcoating is thought to occur due to the reduced impinging pressure of wiping gas onto the strip edges by the boundary effect and it can decrease by 50% or more by applying edge baffles when the baffle-to-strip distance is maintained to 20mm or less. The overcoating was compared with edgedrop of the cold-rolled steel substrate. Edge buildup mostly at the edge area 10 to be 20mm from the edge results in if the edgedrop is not sufficient enough to compensate for the overcoating to be flat on the edgedrop or/and if the overcoating is not small enough to the given edgedrop. Edge baffles can reduce effectively this type of edge buildup.
