  • The interaction between dimethylsulfoxide molecules and some organic molecules, i.e.nitrobenzene, m-dinitrobenzene, o-dinitrobenzene, 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene, m-xylene, mesitylene, bibenzyl, biphenyl, o-phenanthrene, naphthalene, has been studied. The organic molecules exhibit negative deviation from Raoult's law due to the formation of the charge transfer complexes with dimethylsulfoxide. The stability constants of the complexes were determined spectrophotometrically, and also some thermodynamic functions were calculated. The binding energies of the complexes appear in the range of -1 ∼ -4 kcal/mole. The stability depends on the polarity and basicity of the solvent used.

  • Kinetic studies on the vanadium(IV)-catalyzed oxidation of dimethylsulfoxide by hydrogen peroxide in water and aqueous methanol and ethanol show that the reaction is the first order in the concentration of dimethylsulfoxide and hydrogen peroxide, respectively. Activation parameters are also measured for the oxidation of dimethylsulfoxide. It is suggested that the rate determining step is a process involving oxidation of dimethylsulfoxide as the result of nucleophilic attack by the sulfur on the O-O bond of vanadium(V)-peroxide complex.

  • The reversal effect of salicylic acid(SA) on inhibition of flowering in Lemna gibba $G_3$ grown on ${NH_4}^+$-free 1/2H medium under continuous light is modified by ${PO_4}^{2-}$- and $Ca^{2+}$ levels. Dimethylsulfoxide(DMSO) either depresses the SA effect in ${NH_4}^{1}$-free 1/2H medium or amplifies it in E medium. The dual action of DMSO determined by relative levels of macro and micronutrient components is discussed.

  • Conversion of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) was investigated in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) solvent with increasing reaction temperatures and impact of residual water from dehydration reaction byproduct. To convert fructose to 5-HMF, increasing reaction temperature led more conversion to 5-HMF than lower temperature at the range of $120-150^{\circ}C$ in DMSO solvent. DMSO engaged in the acid-catalyzed dehydration and rearrangement reaction as acid and solvent. Increasing temperature led to more furanose structure than pyranose at the range of $30-80^{\circ}C$. Formed 5-HMF could be degraded to levulinic and formic acid at the presence of acid and water. Removal of water in reaction medium could prevent 5-HMF degradation.

  • The solvent effects of MeOH-solvent dimers were studied via AM1 Hamiltonian and supermolecule methods. Methanol, ethanol, acetone, dimethylsulfoxide, N,N-dimethylformamide, tetrahydrofuran, dioxane, and acetonitrile were considered as solvent molecules. Optimized geometries, electron densities, molecular energies, and hydrogen-bonding energies of monomers and dimers were calculated. We found that the stabilization energies contributed to the hydrogen-bonding were decreased in the order of dimethylsulfoxide > ethanol > N,N-dimethylformamide > acetone > methanol > tatrahydrofuran > dioxane > acetonitrile, and this order was explained by using the change of electron density and energy partition functions.

  • Chlorophyll contents in Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) needles of an advance growth stand and a plantation were compared using 80% acetone and DMSO (dimethylsulfoxide). Total chlorophyll contents in DMSO were 4-6 times higher than those in 80% acetone. There were no significant differences in chlorophyll contents between two stand types in both 80% acetone and DMSO. It appeared that 6 hours in DMSO would be appropriate to successfully extract chlorophyll from Korean pine needles of advance growth and planted trees.

  • Apparent molal volumes of urea, 1,3-dimethylurea (DMU), and 1,1,3,3-tetramethylurea(TMU) in dimethylsulfoxide(DMSO) and in methanol have been measured at low concentration by the density measurements at $25^{\circ}C$. It is confirmed that urea molecules in the dilute DMSO solution self-associate to a greater extent than in the concentrated solution, while DMU and TMU molecules in DMSO solutions interact with the solvent molecules. In addition, the molecules of the three solutes also interact predominatingly with methanol molecules.
