Design Sensitivity in Quasi-One-Dimensional Silicon-Based Photonic Crystalline Waveguides

  • This paper describes how the optical properties of a quasi-one-dimensional photonic crystalline waveguide having a periodic air cavity are influenced by various structural parameters; the electromagnetic fields are simulated using the finite-difference time-domain method. The simulations considered four design parameters: cavity size, defect size, lattice constant, and number of cavity. The parameter sensitivity of the photonic bandgap property of the waveguide having air cavities is examined. A couple of significant design guidelines are obtained. We show that the quasi-one-dimensional photonic crystalline waveguide has significant unrealized potential.

  • Since large space structures(LSS) such as a space station, a solar power station satellite, etc., are theoretically distributed parameter and infinite-dimensional system, they have to be modeled into large finite-dimensional systems for control system design. Besides, there are fundamental problems in active vibration control of the large flexible structures. For example, a modeled large finite-dimensional system must be controlled with a much smaller dimensional controller. This causes the spillover phenomenon which degrades the control performances and reduces the stability margin. Furthermore, it may destabilize the entire feedback control system. In this paper, we proposed a novel control method for spillover suppression in the control of large flexible structures by using eigenstructure assignment. Its effectiveness in spillover suppression is investigated and verified by the numerical experiments using an example of the simply supported flexible beam which is modeled to have four controlled modes and eight uncontrolled modes.

원관 주위의 대류 열전달에서 경계조건에 대한 원주방향 열전도의 영향 (Effect of Circumferential Wall Heat Conduction on Boundary Conditions for Convection Heat Transfer from a Circular Tube in Cross Flow)

  • With uniform heat generation from the inner surface of the cylindrical heater placed in a cross flow boundary condition, heat flow that is conducted along the wall of the heater creates a non-isothermal surface temperature and non-uniform heat flux distribution. In the present investigation, the effects of circumferential wall heat conduction on convection heat transfer is investigated for the case of forced convection around horizontal circular tube in cross flow of air. The wall conduction number which can be deduced from the governing energy equation should be used to express the effect of circumferential wall heat conduction. It is demonstrated that the circumferential wall heat conduction influences local Nusselt numbers of one-dimensional and two-dimensional solutions.

  • The holographic velocimetry system has a significant potential for the measurements of three dimensional velocities of particles. In this study, orthogonal two-side holography system was developed to obtain three dimensional velocities and sizes of spray droplets. To get high quality of reconstructed images, singe-exposure holography at two time moments and two orthogonal sides was adopted instead of multi-exposure, single-side holography. From three dimensional positions of droplets determined by reconstruction and image processing system, the three dimensional velocities and sizes of each droplet was extracted using the PTV algorithm. To determine the position of particles in the optical axis, a new focusing parameter was introduced based on the correlation between two droplet images at the same distance. The measured results by holography system were compared with those by the PDPA.

An asymptotic multi-scale approach for beams via strain gradient elasticity: surface effects

  • In this paper, an asymptotic method is employed to formulate nano- or micro-beams based on strain gradient elasticity. Although a basic theory for the strain gradient elasticity has been well established in literature, a systematic approach is relatively rare because of its complexity and ambiguity of higher-order elasticity coefficients. In order to systematically identify the strain gradient effect, an asymptotic approach is adopted by introducing the small parameter which represents the beam geometric slenderness and/or the internal atomistic characteristic. The approach allows us to systematically split the two-dimensional strain gradient elasticity into the microscopic one-dimensional through-the-thickness analysis and the macroscopic one-dimensional beam analysis. The first-order beam problem turns out to be different from the classical elasticity in terms of the bending stiffness, which comes from the through-the-thickness strain gradient effect. This subsequently affects the second-order transverse shear stress in which the surface shear stress exists. It is demonstrated that a careful derivation of a first strain gradient elasticity embraces "Gurtin-Murdoch traction" as the surface effect of a one-dimensional Euler-Bernoulli-like beam model.

KINEMATICAL INVARIANTS AND APPLICATIONS FOR SURFACES IN THREE DIMENSIONAL EUCLIDEAN SPACE

  • In three dimensional Euclidean space we consider kinematical invariants of the surface which is generated by the motion of a planar curve, especially, the surface which is foliated by circles. At first we characterize the properties of single parameter plane with the theories of unit spherical curve in three dimensional Euclidean space. Then using these results we give the invariants and differential invariants, kinematical properties and some special examples of the surface foliated by circles. The methods established here can be used to the other kinds of the surface in three dimensional Euclidean space.

혼합대류에 의한 구 주위의 충류유동 및 열전달 해석 (Analysis of mixed convective laminar flow and heat transfer about a sphere)

  • 본 연구에서는 구 주위의 혼합대류에 대하여 전 영역에 걸쳐 유효한 매개변수 를 차원해석에 의해 유도하고 이를 적용하여 지배방정식을 비상사 경계층 방정식의 형 태로 변환하고 이를 유한차분법에 의해 수치적으로 해석하였다. 단순 강제대류에서 부터 단순 자연대류 까지의 전 영역에 걸쳐 구 주위의 속도 및 온도분포,국소열전달계 수 및 마찰계수를 Gr/Re$^{2}$의 함수로 구하였으며 Prandtl수가 0.7과 7인 유체에 대 하여 계산을 수행함으로써 Prandtl수의 변화에 따른 강제대류 및 자연대류의 비교강도 의 영향에 대하여 고찰하였다. 자연대류의 영향에 의한 벽면에서의 운동에너지증가 에 따른 유동의 박리점 이동에 대하여도 고찰하였다.

CAE를 활용한 모바일 디바이스 부품의 블랭킹 공정 시 클리어런스에 따른 치수정밀도 분석 (Analysis of dimension precision of mobile device components according to the clearance in blanking process using CAE)

  • For one decades, mobile devices components were made with plastic material, but environmental problems have recently replaced them with metal materials such as aluminum. Generally, aluminum components are mostly produced through cutting, but this process has limitations such as productivity and chip recycling. For this reason, many researches are conducted to improve productivity by replacing with the forging press process for manufacturing mobile device components. After forging process, the flash is remained and it is necessary to eliminate the flash from the final shape of components. In this paper, one-sided clearance for blanking aluminum material wes selected for parameter affected to the dimensional precision. Because the clearance is the most important parameter in blanking process. Deriving the clearance of blanking process for high dimensional precision, five level of one-sided clearance is selected and CAE is used to analyze the dimensional precision for each case.

나이퀴스트율보다 빠른 전송 시스템에서 ISI 감소를 위한 변수 도출 방법 (Parameter Derivation for Reducing ISI in 2-Dimensional Faster-than-Nyquist Transmission)

  • FTN (Faster-than-Nyquist) 전송 방식은 나이퀴스트 (Nyquist) 율보다 빠르게 신호를 전송할 수 있으나 필연적으로 ISI (Inter-Symbol Interference)가 발생하고 이로 인하여 성능이 열화된다. ISI로 인한 성능 열화를 최소화하기 위해서는 FTN 기법의 변수를 최적화하여 ISI의 양을 최소화할 수 있으나, 2차원 FTN 시스템에는 다양한 변수가 존재하므로 모든 변수에 대해 전산 실험을 수행하여 가장 우수한 성능을 나타내는 변수를 도출하는 것은 많은 시간이 소요된다. 본 논문에서는 2차원 FTN 전송으로 인한 ISI를 수학적으로 모델링하여 ISI의 양을 최소화할 수 있는 2차원 FTN 시스템의 변수 도출 방안을 제안한다. 본 논문에서 제안하는 기법은 2차원 FTN 시스템을 최적화하기 위한 변수를 효율적으로 도출해 낼 수 있다. 또한 2차원 FTN 시스템에 최적화된 변수를 적용하여 기존의 나이퀴스트 시스템과 동일한 비트 오율 (bit error rate) 성능을 제공하면서 전송 효율을 증가시킬 수 있다.

모형 선택 기준들에 대한 LASSO 회귀 모형 편의의 영향 연구 (A study on bias effect of LASSO regression for model selection criteria)

  • 고차원 자료(high dimensional data)는 변수의 수가 표본의 수보다 많은 자료로 다양한 분야에서 관측 또는 생성되고 있다. 일반적으로, 고차원 자료에 대한 회귀 모형에서는 모수의 추정과 과적합을 피하기 위하여 변수 선택이 이루어진다. 벌점화 회귀 모형(penalized regression model)은 변수 선택과 회귀 계수의 추정을 동시에 수행하는 장점으로 인하여 고차원 자료에 빈번하게 적용되고 있다. 하지만, 벌점화 회귀 모형에서도 여전히 조율 모수 선택(tuning parameter selection)을 통한 최적의 모형 선택이 요구된다. 본 논문에서는 벌점화 회귀 모형 중에서 대표적인 LASSO 회귀 모형을 기반으로 모형 선택의 기준들에 대한 LASSO 회귀 추정량의 편의가 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 모의실험을 통하여 수치적으로 연구하였고 편의의 보정의 필요성에 대하여 나타내었다. 실제 자료 분석에서의 영향을 나타내기 위하여, 폐암 환자의 유전자 발현량(gene expression) 자료를 기반으로 바이오마커 식별(biomarker identification) 문제에 적용하였다.
