  • This study was carried out to measure the seasonal changes in community structure and species composition of marobenthos on the subtidal area of Saemangeum regions. The macrobenthos comprised 64 species were during this study, predominately annelids (53.0%), arthropods (18.8%), mollusks (18.8%) and 9.4% were from other species. Total abundance was 24,885 individuals, comprising 19,805 individuals of annelids (79.6%), 4,620 individuals of mollusks (18.5%), 295 individuals of other species (1.2%), and 165 individuals of arthropods (0.7%). After analyzing the bray-curtis similarity, had two large groups (A, B) the inside and outside of Saemangeum dike. They all matched the nMDS analysis. I evaluated the benthic community health using BPI (Benthic pollution Index). There are no significant differences between the station position and the inside or outside of Saemangeum dike. But, highest BPI level was in March.

  • The gate expansion was planed to increase discharge capacity of gate structure at sea dike in Asan Bay. So it was estimated for changing of hydraulic states in Pyeongteak Harbor Zone caused by gate expansion, using Delft3D, FLOW-3D and hydraulic physical scale model testing. In result, the influence of gate expansion was indicated to be weak.

  • This study aims at predicting the behavior of saturated soft clayey foundation subjected to earth structure loads such as tidal dike, embankment etc. by using Biot's consolidation equation coupled with elasto-viscoplastic constitutive model. To validate the computer program developed b author, a case study was performed for the site of Kwang-yang steel works improved by sand drain, where since the beginning of the works, field measurements(settlement, lateral displacement and excess pore water pressure) had been accurately achieved. Comparisons between numerical results and observation values were carried out. The main results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. Settlement and lateral displacement between numerical and observation values show satisfactory accordance. 2. As for the exess pre water pressure, numerical results appear to be larger than observation values, which may be due to the existence of sand seams which were not found during soil investigation. 3. Useful data available for failure prediction of soft foundation can be secured by examining lateral displacement, settlement, exess pore water pressure and stress paths.

  • The small loop EM method is a fast and convenient geophysical tool which can give shallow subsurface resistivity distribution. It can be a useful alternative of resistivity method in conductive environment. We applied the multi-frequency small loop EM method for the investigation of a soft ground landfill site which was constructed on a tideland since the resistivity of the survey area is extremely low. 3D resistivity distribution was obtained by merging 1D inversion results and shallow subsurface structure can be interpreted. By comparing the result with the drilling log and measured soil resistivity sampled at 16 drill holes, we can get lot of information such as groundwater level, thickness of landfill, salinity distribution, depth to the basement and etc.

  • The objective of this study is to measures deformation of the structures for stability checks by GPS survey. In this study, 2 points on south side dike of Keum River were measured by 4 sets of GPS(SR9500, Leica) every 4 months for a year, and 3-dimensional displacements of the points were acquired. In order to seek more reliable deformation measurement methods for the offshore structure by GPS, the accuracy of GPS survey with various control points configuration and checking system for detecting unrealistic measurements are also discussed.

  • Artificial structures have been designed as pilot structures to promote the creation and restoration of tidal flats. However, little information is available as to whether such artificial construction affects the macrobenthic community structure. We monitored the variation of the macrobenthic community structure and species composition near natural and artificial structures (seaweed and a timber fence) on the tidal flats near the Iwon Dike, Korea. In total, 137 macrobenthic species were recorded during this study, predominantly crustaceans (47%), polychaetes (18%), and molluscs (27%). Polychaetes comprised over 50% of the total density, followed by gastropods (38%) and crustaceans (11%). Macrobenthic species composition in the artificial and natural areas, was initially similar, but it differed after 7 months. The gastropod Umbonium thomasi, the most dominant species, was present at both sites in the first month after the start of the experiment, but disappeared at the artificial sites within 7 months, suggesting disturbance by the environmental factors. The number of species and diversity (H') varied significantly within sites at the beginning of the experiment, but no difference was observed after 7 months. Multivariate analysis (multidimensional scaling) revealed significant differences in community structure between the artificial and the natural areas from 7 months after the start of the experiment, except from 18 to 21 months. The community structures were mainly influenced by U. thomasi. Community structure at the artificial sites was affected by environmental variables, such as carbon, COD/IL sulfide, loss of ignition, kurtosis and silt, which changed over time. We observed no significant correlations between environmental variables and the dominant species, except in the case of Spio sp. and Macrophthalmus dilatatus, suggesting that the biological interactions and temporary disturbances such as typhoon, as well as the effects of artificial structures may also be important regulating factors in this system.

  • Heterotrophic bacteria are a major member of the microbial loop in the marine ecosystem and play an important role in the biogeochemical cycle decomposing organic matter. Therefore study of bacterial variation is important to understand the material cycle and energy flow of marine ecosystems. We investigated the monthly variations of bacteria and environmental factors in the Youngsan River estuary, and the correlation between bacteria and phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll-a) including size-structure. As a result, bacteria of the Youngsan River estuary were higher in the surface than in the bottom layer, and higher in the summer than in winter. And the closer to the dike, the abundance increased, and it increased to the peaks in August, September, and June 2019 at the station closest to the dike. The chlorophyll-a also increases at the stations and time when the bacterial abundance was high and they correlates positively displaying no difference between size fractions. The results indicate that organic matter derived from phytoplankton has an effect on bacterial variation but no size-dependent effects. In addition, the seasonal pattern of bacteria increasing in proportion to the water temperature suggests the effect of water temperature on the growth of bacteria. No association of bacterial abundance variation with nutrient supply due to freshwater input was observed. In this study, dissolved oxygen was depleted and hypoxia was observed for a short time when a strong stratification was not developed. This may be resulted from the supply of organic matter from phytoplankton and the consumption of oxygen due to bacterial decomposition.

  • This study demonstrates the investigation of zooplankton communities (e.g. rotifers, cladocerans and copepods) and environmentally related driving factors (e.g. elevation, area size, water depth, types of dike construction, and bottom substrates). We hypothesized that zooplankton community structure and composition would be influenced by ambient driving forces in different scales of the irrigation ponds (Dumbeong). A total of 66 zooplankton species/groups (56 rotifers, 9 cladocerans, 1 copepods) were found and identified at 45 Dumbeong of Goseong region (i.e. Goseong-gun) in 2011. The rotifers occupied 84.9% of the total zooplankton abundance. We could categorize a clear separation of zooplankton communities into 4 different patterns based on cluster analysis. Zooplankton diversities in Dumbeongs were lower than those in natural ponds or wetlands. In addition, community structure of zooplankton was also simpler and had a broken stick distribution based on SHE analysis. Species composition in each Dumbeong was not significantly discriminated each other. The result of canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) pinpointed that significant influential variables upon zooplankton community were dissolved oxygen percent saturation, pH, and Dumbeong's material. This study indicated that morphological type of the Dumbeong and its water quality could determine the community structure of zooplankton. Furthermore, the connectivity between ambient habitats and materials could be necessary to be rigorously considered in respect to producing the Dumbeongs to subsidize alternative habitats for wetland ecosystem in freshwater landscape.
