Exploring Integrated Design Strategies for the Optimal Use of BIM

  • This paper introduces an experimental design studio that explores the optimal use of current digital technologies in order to employ Building Information Modeling at the early phase of design process. Based upon the outcomes from the aforementioned studio, the paper discusses the integrated design strategies for BIM in the design process. In this paper, BIM is proposed as a design tool that increases an overal design productivity more effectively and efficiently compared to BIM as a construction tool with encouraging a design communication among different partakers in the design process.

The Mediating Role of Self-Regulation Between Digital Literacy and Learning Outcomes in the Digital Textbook for Middle School English

  • Digital textbooks draw attention as a new format of educational material, using the advantages of information technology; this innovative learning tool requires consideration as a part of successful and effective learning. The main purpose of the article is to investigate the mediating role of self-regulation between digital literacy and learning outcomes (academic performance and learning motivation) when using digital textbooks as a learning tool in Middle School English. Both descriptive and regression analysis were used as data analyses methods. The main findings of this study were as follows: first, digital literacy and self-regulation significantly predicted academic performance and learning motivation; second, self-regulation fully mediated between digital literacy and academic performance; third, self-regulation partially mediated between digital literacy and learning motivation. The research results proved the effects of digital literacy and self-regulation on the learning outcomes and mediating role of self-regulation between digital literacy and learning outcomes. These results help to design and implement effective lessons when using a digital textbook in Middle school English.

  • In this work, we have developed a systematic way of utilizing the basic design tools for superconductive electronics. This include WRSPICE, XIC, margin program, and L-meter. Since the high performance analog-to- digital converter can be built with Rapid Single Flux Quantum (RSFQ) logic circuits the development of superconductive analog-to-digital converter has attracted a lot of interests as one of the most prospective area of the application of Josephson Junction technology. One of the main advantages in using Rapid Single Flux Quantum logic in the analog-to-digital converter is the low voltage output from the Josephson junction switching, and hence the high resolution. To design an 1-bit analog-digital converter, first we have used XIC tool to compose a circuit schematic, and then studied the operational principle of the circuit with WRSPICE tool. Through this process, we obtained the proper circuit diagram of an 1-bit analog-digital converter circuit. Based on this circuit we performed margin calculations of the designed circuits and optimized circuit parameters. The optimized circuit was laid out as a mask drawing. Inductance values of the circuit layout were calculated with L-meter. Circuit inductors were adjusted according to these calculations and the final layout was obtained.

  • The digital modeling process is visualization of designer's specific intension in digital virtual space by constructing computer and information system that fits the designer's intension and morphological characteristic of the space that to be modeled. Digital Modeling Process has been brought to attention for it's design efficiency and potentialities as new creative tool. The effect of DMP, in spacial design process has been grown from simply providing a ways to visualize designer's idea toward utilizing modeling data for real construction which includes architectural and constructional material. The purpose of this study is to find optimal methodological answers to spatial design process that is improved and specialized due to rapid improvement of digital media.

  • 본 연구에서는 국외 설계사무실과 국내 설계사무실의 수행 프로젝트(표1)를 디지털 디자인 프로세스에서의 디지털 도구 활용 사례조사 결과를 일련의 설계 프로세스(기획(Pre-Design), 계획 설계(Schematic Design) 중간설계(Detail Design), 실시설계(Construction Design))를 11개의 설계 단위작업((1)자료수집, (2)도서화작업, (3)의사소통/프레젠테이션, (4)협력업체와의 협업, (5)디자인 실험, (6)디자인분석/유효성 검토, (7)빌딩시스템과 자재선정, (8)자재비교/견적, (9)디자인 발전, (10)RP를 이용한 모델 제작, (11)시공/제작)으로 분류하여(설계프로세스별로 디지털 디자인 툴의 활용 빈도를 조사 분석하는 것은 프로세스별로 중복된 설계 단위작업이 진행됨으로 연구결과의 의미가 잘못 해석될 수 있다.) 그 활용에 대한 유형을 분석하고 이를 바탕으로 설계과정에서의 디지털 디자인 툴의 활용특성을 도출하여 실무설계의 기초자료를 제공하는데 그 목적을 둔다.

  • CAD는 이미 디자인 분야에서도 중요하게 사용되는 도구로 동시 공학적 프로세스 상에서 전통적인 디자인 방법은 점점 사라져 가고 있다. 하지만, 리버스 엔지니어링(Reverse Engineering) 방식의 CAD 도구는 디자이너들의 작업을 위해 사용하는 도구로는 아직 많은 문제점들을 가지고 있다. 특히 디자인 프로세스 초기 단계의 직관적인 작업의 특성으로 인해 디자이너들이 기존의 CAD 도구들을 이 단계에서 적용하기는 거의 불가능하다. 최근 이러한 정성적인 문제들에 대해 구체적으로 접근하려는 연구들이 소프트웨어 뿐 아니라 하드웨어적 측면에서도 이루어지고 있다. 이 글에서는 디자인 프로세스 상에서 사용되는 기존의 3D CAD 도구의 문제점들과 최근 연구되고 있는 새로운 인터페이스 접근 방법들에 대해 알아보았다. 또한 디자이너들을 위한 CAD 개발을 위한 가이드라인을 제시하고 이를 통해 유비쿼터스 컴퓨팅 환경에서 효율적으로 사용할 수 있는 디자인 도구를 개발하기 위한 방안을 제시하였다.

  • The purpose of this study are to show a new possibility of identity design to be used as tools of users identity expression, designing digital contents by studying on the methods to express users identities successfully in the digital contents design, and to present the possibility to expand the area of identity design. Digital contents are a communication media in it self, but this study tried to consider the digital contents as a tool of users communication or expression. The identity expression, which are not only makes communications efficient but also lets products and companies acknowledged by users, is one of the most indispensable factors in products competitive power in both the present and the future. However, no define methods of identity expression are settled as well as recognized by users properly and accurately yet, so that this study focuses on that point. Therefore, This study is advanced in the direction of establishing the concept of digital identity for an expansion of the media toward the identity expression in design as well as making researchers in successful identity expression ways by means of actual design, more than a graphic image making that simply decorates a digital contents. The point of this study is to show a new concept of identity design that expresses users identities so as to suggest another possibility of identity design.

  • Among the mainstream of this society has quickly adopted computer technology as part of their daily life, the ever growing group of elderly people, which will increase from 7% of the population in 2000 to being 14% just 18 years later, has been being exposed to computer using environment more than ever before. According to the survey of Korean government in 2005, the number of the elderly using computer has been rising actually, so web-based survey to identify housing needs of the elderly seems to have lots of possibilities as a useful tool for them. This study aims at comparing web-based survey tool with paper-based one, developed to identify the elderly needs on digital home planning. Experimental method and in-depth interview were employed. The participants were divided into 2 groups, web-based and paper-based survey group. Each group was controlled over by age (average 60 years old), gender and computer skill. As a results, web-based survy tool was revealed as effective to clearer understanding and causing more interests and more available, but less easy to handle than paper-based survey one. Through the in-depth interview, web-based survey tool was identified as a more effective method to figure out the needs of the elderly who are familiar with computer.

  • The development in modern world media made information expansion and conversion much easier. These changes in media environment required a lot of companies to quickly respond to the overall environment and come up with new appropriate marketing strategies. Companies use experiential exhibition halls to enhance their images. The goal of the research is to set the basis for digital signage exhibition production characteristics as a spatial mechanism by presenting the need to use the digital signage as a tool. Digital signage expands senses and connects internal and external space. There are many types of digital signage (display, projection, special media, etc) and they are informative, aesthetic, inductive, and amusing. For research methods, Korean companies' exhibition halls sample analysis and surveys were executed to analyze the awareness, expression characteristics, effects, and usage status of digital signage. In conclusion, corporate exhibition halls should: 1. be an interesting and comfortable space that can be used as a communication tool between the company and consumers 2. increase corporate potentials and faith by expanding human senses and inducing new experiences 3. continue to capture the interest of spectators through diversity.

  • Ever-evolving diverse communication tools bring numerous changes and improvements into the lives of humans. It is extremely important to provide visual information when communicating with consumers in the commercial arena because humans acquire over eighty percent of the information around them through sense of sight. One cannot compete with just sheer quality in today's world. Therefore, the applications of digital technology in the visual merchandising became crucial, for it can dramatically improve the market value. Among these applications is digital signage, a new media for esthetic experience. I strongly believe that this would be a new marketing tool for the brand's distinctive and unique publicity. This research has been conducted in order to find out how the fast-growing digital signage, defined by the contents, has become not just a mere digital video clip but an esthetic merchandising tool that can produce various effective marketing strategies; and to discover the characteristics that this application has brought out in the visual merchandising field of fashion stores' global SPA brands. Based on the market case study, analyses have been made for the digital signage types and strategies regarding the visual merchandising expressive elements and for the effects the digital signage application will have on publicity. According to the results, the digital signage has proven to be informative, diversely applicable and contributes greatly to the increase in sales and to the improvement of company and brand image. Thus, it is much more than just a media tool for advertisement.
