  • This study examines how disability pride of people having acquired visual impairment can be constructed. The theme is explored with the Japanese TV drama "Challenged". The paradigms regarding construction of disability pride and acceptance of disability are fundamentally different. In this context it can be said that a criticism of disability acceptance theory has something with a criticism of medical model of disability. It is main character Hanawa and chairman of teachers, and principal who were noticeable specifically at the point of forming disability pride, and these characters show a common feature that social idealism is embodied in their awareness. Other characters of the drama show a change of their consciousness to social idealism. As a conclusion this study suggests importances of humanistic and social scientific analysis as well as of educational effects achieved by means of drama.

The formalized data collection collected 19 items from the four areas of drama information, person information, broadcasting information, and audience rating information of each broadcasting company. In order to collect unstructured data, crawling techniques were used to collect bulletin boards, pre - broadcast blogs and post - broadcast blogs for each drama. From the collected data, it was found that the differences according to broadcasting time, the start time, genre, and day of broadcasting were similar among broadcasting companies.

  • Although the data service of the digital broadcasting has been regarded as the representative service of the broadcasting and communication convergence, it, however, has failed to gain the popularity with the viewers due to the viewer's viewing modality of focusing only on the TV programs. Based on the experts' opinions that the data service should step up so that using a data service while watching a TV program creates a synergy effect, the paper proposes a method for allowing a data service to utilize the information of a TV program. The method has a tool for describing the information of a TV program's content, which changes as time goes on and provides a mechanism for transmitting the information in the way compatible to the digital broadcasting standard. As an application of the method, with a domestic data service developing company, we have developed a ticker data service that shows the information (e.g., actors, places, sponsors, etc.) of a drama.

  • For a long time, dramas that everyone has enjoyed at home have become the most popular cultural contents due to the development of digital technology and the influence of Hallyu.(Korean Wave) This study was conducted in-depth interviews and participatory observations on the background, role, identity, and labor experience of TV planning producers who appeared in the drama production process with the implementation of outsourcing production policy in 1991. The number of dramas produced increased sharply in the mid-2000s due to the Korean Wave. Against this backdrop, the planning producer has expanded their scope in the drama production process and emerged as a new drama producer. The planning producer plays a role in creating an environment in which writers and directors can be selected with the identity of "not a creator but a producer of dramas" and lead drama planning. OTT and watching TV on the Internet have made it possible to watch dramas without TV. As this phenomenon accelerates and becomes commonplace, fewer consumers adhere to the traditional way of watching dramas using TV, and consumers' emotional tastes become more demanding. In this environment, TV planning producers are leading the production of dramas, exerting as much influence as writers and directors. They are also building new power relationships among drama producers by securing planning and financial power.

  • Broadcaster and production studio inevitably take the risk in Korea because the outsourced drama is contracted before produced. However, it is important for both parties to share risk and reward. This study seeks to assess the fairness of the copyright contract between broadcaster and production studio by examining whether they both have the balanced risk and reward structure. For the study, revenue and cost elements with their amounts are identified, which come from TV commercials, oversea sales, the secondary windows, sponsorship, and product placement. Next, the revenue and COGS (Cost of goods sold) of broadcaster and studio are estimated for both cases of when drama becomes successful or not. The analysis reveals that the current copyright agreement allows broadcaster hold low risk but high reward whilst production studio takes high risk low reward. However, the result doesn't imply that government intervention is justified because demand and supply determine the negotiation power in a free economy.

  • We investigate the dynamic relationships among digital piracy activities, TV ratings, and online buzz for Korean TV dramas using a panel vector autoregression model. Our main findings include 1) TV ratings are negatively affected by digital piracy activities but positively affected by google buzz, 2) digital piracy activities are negatively affected by TV ratings and social buzz, and 3) social buzz and google buzz are positively influenced by each other. While many empirical studies were conducted to reveal the effects of music or movie piracy, our understanding of drama piracy is limited. We provide empirical evidence of the dynamic relationships between drama piracy, TV ratings, and online buzz. Our findings show the presence of indirect piracy effects on TV ratings through online buzz. Further, we reveal that social buzz and google trends play different roles in promoting TV ratings and piracy activities. We discuss the implications of our findings for theory and practitioners.

  • Consumer expectations for drama VFX increased as the influx of overseas dramas increased due to the growth of OTT service, but the current production time of the drama production system has a negative effect on the quality and completion of work. This paper proposes a background rendering using a game engine and a subject rendering using background HDRI as environmental lighting. The proposed workflow is expected to reduce the production time of VFX and improve the quality of VFX. The proposed workflow was verified in 3 steps. Comparing game engine and rendering software according to the same lighting environment and camera distance, comparing rendering with existing rendering method and background HDRI generation, and validating the proposed workflow. For verification, quantitative evaluation was performed using Structual similarity index and histogram. This study is expected to be one of the options to improve the quality of VFX and improve the risk.
