The non-staggered(collocated) grid approach in which all the solution variables are located at the centers of control volumes is very popular for incompressible flow analyses because of its numerical efficiency on the curvilinear or unstructured grids. Rhie and Chow's paper is the first in using non-staggered grid method for SIMPLE algorithm, where pressure weighted interpolation was used to prevent decoupling of pressure and velocity. But it has been known that this non-staggered grid method has stability problems when pressure fields are nonlinear like in natural convection flows. Also Rhie-Chow scheme generates large numerical diffusion near curved walls. The cause of these unwanted problems is too large pressure damping term compared to the magnitude of face velocity. In this study the magnitude of pressure damping term of Rhie-Chow's method is limited to 1∼10% of face velocity to prevent physically unreasonable solutions. The wall pressure extrapolation which is necessary for cell-centered FVM is another source of numerical errors. Some methods are applied in a unstructured FV solver and analyzed in view of numerical accuracy. Here, two natural convection problems are solved to check the effect of the Rhie-Chow's method on numerical stability. And numerical diffusion from Rhie-Chow's method is studied by solving the inviscid flow around a circular cylinder.
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate diffusion tensor (DT) imaging-derived properties of benign oligemia, true "at risk" penumbra (TP), and the infarct core (IC) during the first 3 hours of stroke onset. Materials and Methods: The study was approved by the local animal care and use committee. DT imaging data were obtained from 14 rats after permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (pMCAO) using a 7T magnetic resonance scanner (Bruker) in room air. Relative cerebral blood flow and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps were generated to define oligemia, TP, IC, and normal tissue (NT) every 30 minutes up to 3 hours. Relative fractional anisotropy (rFA), pure anisotropy (rq), diffusion magnitude (rL), ADC (rADC), axial diffusivity (rAD), and radial diffusivity (rRD) values were derived by comparison with the contralateral normal brain. Results: The mean volume of oligemia was $24.7{\pm}14.1mm^3$, that of TP was $81.3{\pm}62.6mm^3$, and that of IC was $123.0{\pm}85.2mm^3$ at 30 minutes after pMCAO. rFA showed an initial paradoxical 10% increase in IC and TP, and declined afterward. The rq, rL, rADC, rAD, and rRD showed an initial discrepant decrease in IC (from -24% to -36%) as compared with TP (from -7% to -13%). Significant differences (p < 0.05) in metrics, except rFA, were found between tissue subtypes in the first 2.5 hours. The rq demonstrated the best overall performance in discriminating TP from IC (accuracy = 92.6%, area under curve = 0.93) and the optimal cutoff value was -33.90%. The metric values for oligemia and NT remained similar at all time points. Conclusion: Benign oligemia is small and remains microstructurally normal under pMCAO. TP and IC show a distinct evolution of DT-derived properties within the first 3 hours of stroke onset, and are thus potentially useful in predicting the fate of ischemic brain.

This article is concerned with effective numerical techniques for partial differential equation (PDE)-based image restoration. Numerical realizations of most PDE-based denoising models show a common drawback: loss of fine structures. In order to overcome the drawback, the article introduces a new time-stepping procedure, called the method of nonflat time evolution (MONTE), in which the timestep size is determined based on local image characteristics such as the curvature or the diffusion magnitude. The MONTE provides PDE-based restoration models with an effective mechanism for the equalization of the net diffusion over a wide range of image frequency components. It can be easily applied to diverse evolutionary PDE-based restoration models and their spatial and temporal discretizations. It has been numerically verified that the MONTE results in a significant reduction in numerical dissipation and preserves fine structures such as edges and textures satisfactorily, while it removes the noise with an improved efficiency. Various numerical results are shown to confirm the claim.
Vertical mixing in the ocean affects the formation of water masses as well as the vertical distribution of nutrients and dissolved substances. this study is to investigate the effect of stability on the intensity of vertical transfer in the case of shallow and straitfied channel. It is found that the relation of the stability and vertical turbulent diffusion is given by K$\sub$z/ = -${\beta}$-(c+${\beta}$) / ${\alpha}$(E-1/${\alpha}$) where K$\sub$z/ and E denotes the vertical turbulent diffusion coefficient and stability, respectively. The empirical coefficients ${\alpha}$, ${\beta}$ and c depend on the magnitude of vertical components and stability, i.e., through thermocline intensity. The study indicates that the diffusivity of the surface mixed layer is (K$\sub$z/)=300∼1,200$\textrm{cm}^2$/sec, the thermocline layer is (K$\sub$z/)= 50∼200$\textrm{cm}^2$/sec and the cold layer is (K$\sub$z/)=200∼600$\textrm{cm}^2$/sec based on near- minimum least-squares error estimates from the regression analysis. An important result of our study comes out that the model is in accordance with the general trends of the effect of stability on the vertical turbulent diffusion coefficients in the case of shallow and strongly stratified channel.

An unsteady-state moisture diffusion through cellulosic fibers in paper was characterized from the moisture sorption experiment and the mathematical modeling. The sorption experiment was conducted by exposing thin dry paper specimens to a constant temperature-humidity environment. Oven dried blotting papers and filter papers were used as test samples and the gains of their weights were constantly monitored and recorded as a function of sorption time. For a mathematical approach, the moisture transport was assumed to be an one-dimensional diffusion in thickness direction through the geometrically symmetric structure of paper. The model was asymptotically simplified with a short-term approximation. It gave us a new insight into the moisture uptake phenomena as a function of square root of sorption time. The fiber-phase moisture diffusivities(FPMD) of paper samples were then determined by correlating the experimental data with the unsteady-state diffusion model obtained. Their values were found to be on the order of magnitude of $10^{-6}-10^{-7}cm^2$/min., which were equivalent to the hypothetical effective diffusion coefficients at the limit of zero porosity. The moisture sorption curve predicted from the model fairly agreed with that obtained from the experiment at some limited initial stages of the moisture uptake process. The FPMD value of paper significantly varied depending upon the current moisture content of paper. The mean FPMD was about 0.7-0.8 times as large as the short-term approximated FPMD.
The effect of grain boundary structure on zigzag migrtion has been studied. Five kinds of a(2110)-m(1010) diffusion couples with different twist angles by 30$^{\circ}$from a [0001] common direction of each plane were prepared. When chromia (Cr2O3) was added to the diffusion couples by a vapor phase, zigzag migration of the grain boundary occurred. The fraction of zigzag migration did not essentially vary with the twist angle, but the magnitude and migration distance of individual migrating segment varied. The variation of CIGM morphology thus appears to result from the change in grain boundary mobility due to microscopic deviation of grain boundary structure out of a macroscopic grain boundary orientation.
This paper proposes a hybrid successive over-relaxation iterative method for the numerical solution of a nonlinear diffusion in a one-dimensional porous medium. The considered mathematical model is discretized using a computational complexity reduction scheme called half-sweep finite differences. The local truncation error and the analysis of the stability of the scheme are discussed. The proposed iterative method, which uses explicit group technique and modified successive over-relaxation, is formulated systematically. This method improves the efficiency of obtaining the solution in terms of total iterations and program elapsed time. The accuracy of the proposed method, which is measured using the magnitude of absolute errors, is promising. Numerical convergence tests of the proposed method are also provided. Some numerical experiments are delivered using initial-boundary value problems to show the superiority of the proposed method against some existing numerical methods.

This study investigates network effects to measure how strongly the early adopters affect the brand choice of the potential consumer. By using the Gumbel-Hougaard (GH) copula, this study checks the magnitude of network effects varied from country to country. To consider consumer heterogeneity and network effects in the growth market, this study proposes the multi-brand Gamma/Shifted-Gompertz (m-G/SG) model based on the GH copula. Out of eighteen Western European cellular phone market data and South Korea smartphone data sets, the m-G/SG model provides an improvement in the estimation accuracy over the Libai, Muller, and Peres model. The results show that network effects enhance (i) the polarization of brand choice probabilities as time elapses; (ii) the dominance of the more preferred and the earlier entered brand; and (iii) the deceleration of category-level diffusion. Potential followers can analyze their relationship with earlier entrants through the m-G/SG model and also establish an optimal market entry strategy.

An exprimental research has been carried out to find the intermittent flow pattern in the transition region of a turbulent round jet in order to elucidate detailed turbulence structure and to accumulate basic data necessary for computational turbulence modelling. Turbulent signals were processed digitally to obtain conventional or conditional velocity components. The high-order conditional correlations obtained in this study showed similar trends as those of other free shear flows. It was found that the non-turbulent fluid contributes negligibly to the turbulent kinetic energy production and its diffusive transport and that the diffusion by bulk convection has the same order of magnitude as the gradient diffusion in the free boundary region. The statistical analyses such as flatness factor, skewness factor and probability density functions of turbulent and non-turbulent zone durations have also been performed.

Digital halftoning is to quantize a grayscale image to binary image. The error diffusion halftoning generates high quality bilevel image. But that also has some defects such as warms effect, sharpening and etc. To reduce these defects, Kite proposed the modified threshold modulation that has a parameter to control sharpening. Nevertheless some degradation left near edges with large luminance change. In this paver, we propose a method to control the parameter in proportional to local edge magnitude. The results of computer simulation show more reductions of the sharpening in the halftone image. Especially there are great improvement of quality near edges with large luminance change.
