  • This paper estimates theoretically the diffusion-reaction behaviour of sulfate ion in concrete caused by environmental sulfate attack. Based on Fick's second law and chemical reaction kinetics, a nonlinear and nonsteady diffusion-reaction equation of sulfate ion in concrete, in which the variable diffusion coefficient and the chemical reactions depleting sulfate ion concentration in concrete are considered, is proposed. The finite difference method is utilized to solve the diffusion-reaction equation of sulfate ion in concrete, and then it is used to simulate the diffusion-reaction process and the concentration distribution of sulfate ion in concrete. Afterwards, the experiments for measuring the sulfate ion concentration in concrete are carried out by using EDTA method to verify the proposal model, and results show that the proposed model is basically in agreement with the experimental results. Finally, Numerical example has been completed to investigate the diffusion-reaction behavior of sulfate ion in the concrete plate specimen immersed into sulfate solution.

  • Si-rich-layer-coated U-7 wt%Mo plates were prepared in order to evaluate the diffusion barrier performance of the Si-rich layer in U-Mo vs. Al interdiffusion. Pure Si powder was used for coating the U-Mo plates by annealing at $900^{\circ}C$ for 1 h under vacuum of approximately 1 Pa. Si-rich layers containing more than 60 at% of Si were formed on U-7 wt%Mo plates. Diffusion couple tests were conducted in a muffle furnace at $560-600^{\circ}C$ under vacuum using Si-rich-layer-coated U-Mo plates and pure Al plates. Diffusion couple tests using uncoated U-Mo plates and Al-(0, 2 or 5 wt%)Si plates were also conducted for comparison. Si-rich-layer coatings were more effective in suppressing the interaction during diffusion couple tests between coated U-Mo plate and Al, when compared with U-Mo vs. Al-Si diffusion couples, since only small amounts of Al in the coating could be found after the diffusion couple tests. Si-rich-layer-coated U-7wt%Mo particles were also prepared using the same technique for U-7 wt%Mo plates to observe the microsturctures of the coated particles.

  • Effect of pretreatments on the graphene coated bipolar plate of proton exchange membrane fuel cell(PEMFC) was investigated in simulated environments for PEMFC by using electrochemical measurement techniques. Interfacial contact resistance(ICR) between the graphene coated bipolar plate and the gas diffusion layer(GDL) was measured. The value of ICR decreased with an increase in compaction stress($20N/cm^2{\sim}220N/cm^2$). ICR of graphene coated bipolar plate was higher than that of bare 316L stainless steel. However, Potentiodynamic measurement results showed that the corrosion resistance of graphene coated bipolar plate was higher than that of bare 316L stainless steel. $H_2SO_4$ acid pretreatment was the most effective among various pretreatments. The lowest ICR and the corrosion current density were obtained when using $H_2SO_4$ solution pretreatment.

  • The growth of intermetallic compounds is an important factor in the reliability of solar cells. Especially, the temperature change in the soldering process greatly affects the thickness of the intermetallic compound layer. In this study, we investigated the intermetallic compound growth by Sn-diffusion in solder joints of solar cells. The thickness of the intermetallic compound layer was analyzed by IR lamp power and hot plate temperature control, and the correlation between the intermetallic compound layer and the adhesive strength was confirmed by a $90^{\circ}$ peel test. In order to investigate the growth of the intermetallic compound layer during isothermal aging, the growth of the intermetallic compound layer was analyzed at $85^{\circ}C$ and 85% for 500 h. In addition, the activation energy of Sn was calculated. The diffusion coefficient of the intermetallic compound layer was simulated and compared with experimental results to predict the long-term reliability.

  • The heat conduction and the water vapour diffusion flow through heat insulators between hygroscopical moist building materials were measured by means of the plate method. It was found that the heat transport increases with a moisture motion occuring in the temperature drop. On his basis of simplified assumptions, the increase in the thermal conductivity was calculated from the rate of diffusion flow per unit area, which generally resulted in values inferior to the measured values. The Increase in the heat transport due to water vapour diffusion measured at a large-scale wall specimen was inferior to the one measured by means of the plate method by using a comparable arrangement of layers. The overall heat transfer caused by moisture motion is not a characteristic value of the material, but a property of the whole wall structure

  • An automated, simple, and reliable method was developed for determining in vitro drug release rate from transdermal delivery dosage forms. The patch is held in position in the heating block by sandwiching it between the middle plate and the bottom plate of diffusion cell. The dissolution profile of the commercially available transdermal scopolamine patch was determined over a 72-h period, and the results were compared with those obtained with other methods; paddle-over-disk method, reciprocating method, and diffusion cell method. It was demonstrated that the flow-through method is equivalent in terms of release rate profile and accumulated released drug amount over the lifetime of the dosage form tested. Also this method is simple, reliable and reproducible. Therefore, this technique can be used in a quality control for assuring product uniformity.

  • The concentration and diffusion coefficient of oxide ion vacancies in the oxide scale formed on Fe-22Cr-0.5Mn ferritic stainless steel with and without molybdenum (Mo) was measured at 800℃ by the electrochemical polarization method. After pre-oxidation for 100 h in ambient air at 800 ℃, the oxide scale on one side was completely removed with sandpaper. A YSZ plate was placed on the side where the oxide scale remained. Platinum (Pt) meshes were attached on the top of the YSZ plate and the side where the oxide scale was removed. Changes in electrical current were measured after applying an electrical potential through Pt wires welded to the Pt meshes. The results were interpreted by solving the diffusion equation. The diffusion coefficient and concentration of oxide ion vacancy decreased by 30% and 70% in the specimen with Mo, respectively, compared to the specimen without Mo. The oxide ion vacancy concentration of chromia decreased due to the addition of Mo.

  • Antimicrobial activities of methanol, ethanol, water, and $CH_2Cl_2$ extracts from Fritillaria unibracteata Hsiao et K.C. Hsia and F. ussuriensis Maxim. were investigated by disk-agar diffusion method. The result showed comparatively strong antimicrobial activity against several microorganisms. The extracts from F. unibracteata and F. ussuriensis dosedependently increased the activity. However, water and $CH_2Cl_2$ extracts showed no antimicrobial activity against 7 microorganisms. Especially, against the most sensitive microorganism Staphylococcus epidermidis, methanol extracts at highest concentration of 20 mg/mL exhibited the largest clear zone on plate by 6-12 mm and ethanol extracts on plate by 6-10 mm.

  • A numerical study is made of a manifold and bipolar plate in polymer electrolyte fuel cells, the aim of the present study is to describe the characteristics of flow pattern In manifold and bipolar plate. The present work shows that the flow pattern in the bipolar plate is affected by the penetration flow through GDL characterized by clamping pressure and GDL intrusion in to a channel area. Manifold geometry also affects the flow distribution. The recirculation flow by bent duct destroy even distribution In manifold, the present work shows that corner rounding can improve the manifold performance.
