  • We have analyzed students' reports on a problem for 'adhesive tape' and 'fractal diffraction' among ten assigned problems in the first Korean youth physics tournament (KYPT). There were three high school team' s reports and one middle school team' s report on this problem. However, many students failed to solve the 'fractal diffraction' problem correctly due to having no idea of fractal. This problem was found to be most difficult one for the participated students among ten assigned problems given in the first KYPT.

  • The knowledge of the waves passing through the breakwater makes an important role in the efficient breakwater design. Wave diffraction is an important factor in this role, but some usable development about it have not been made in our country as yet. The diffraction of sea-water waves round the end of a semi-infinite impermeable breakwater has been investigated, applying a solution of the water wave diffraction problems given by Penney & Price. The wave pattern and heights on both the leewardside and the windward-side of the breakwater have been calculated and summarized in the form of diagrams with diffraction factors between $r/{\lambda}=0~50$. This involves some extension of the diffraction diagrams made previously. The theory and computation methods with computer program in fortran IV developed in this study make an efficient use for estimating the diffraction effects at a semi-infinite breakwater.

  • Multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) displacement measurement Is needed In many application fields: precision machine control, precision assembly, vibration analysis, and so on. This paper presents a new MDOF displacement measurement method using a laser diode (LD), two position-sensitive detectors (PSDs), and a conventional diffraction grating. It utilizes typical features of a diffraction grating to obtain the information of MDOF displacement. MDOF displacement is calculated from the independent coordinate values of the diffracted ray spots on the PSDs. Forward and inverse kinematic problems were solved to compute the MDOF displacement of a rigid body. Experimental results show maximum absolute errors of less than ${\pm}10$ micrometers in translation and ${\pm}30$ arcsecs in rotation.

  • In the present study, the wave excitation forces acting on an array of porous circular cylinders are examined based on diffraction problems. To calculate the wave forces, the fluid domain is divided into three regions i.e. a single exterior region, N interior regions and N beneath regions, and the diffraction in each fluid region is expressed by an eigenfunction expansion method with using 3-dimension liner potential theory (Williams and Li, 2000). Especially, the present method is extended to the case of an array of truncated porous circular cylinders to calculate the heave forces as well as surge and sway forces. To verify this method, the numerical results obtained by eigenfunction are compared with these results obtained by higher order boundary element method (Choi et al., 2000). The numerical results obtained by this study are in good agreement with those results. By changing the numbers of porous circular cylinders, the angle of incident wave and the porosity rate of circular cylinders, the wave excitation forces such as surge, sway and heave on an array of truncated porous circular cylinders are investigated.

  • Technical investigation to figure out the problems arising during in-situ heating electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis inside scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was carried out. EBSD patterns were successfully acquired up to $830^{\circ}C$ without degradation of EBSD pattern quality in steels. Several technical problems such as image drift and surface microstructure pinning were taking place during in-situ experiments. Image drift problem was successfully prevented in constant current supplying mode. It was revealed that the surface pinning problem was resulted from the $TiO_2$ oxide particle formation during heating inside SEM chamber. Surface pinning phenomenon was fairly reduced by additional platinum and carbon multi-layer coating before in-situ heating experiment, furthermore was perfectly prevented by improvement of vacuum level of SEM chamber via leakage control. Plane view in-situ observation provides better understanding on the overall feature of recrystallization phenomena and cross sectional in-situ observation provides clearer understanding on the recrystallization mechanism.

  • Recently much attention has been drawn to meshfree method since conventional methods such as FDM, FVM and FEM have suffered from difficulty with mesh generation for complex geometry and deformable bodies. In this paper, an upwind point collocation meshfree method developed by the authors is applied to two shock wave diffraction problems. One is the shock diffraction over a 90-degree corner and the other is the single Mach reflection on a ramp. The scheme showed stability and the results showed accuracy.

  • The peculiarities of using Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS) and solid state phase synthesis for production of high temperature superconductor materials are discussed. Oxide superconductors with general formula $ReBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{7-x}$ (Re= Y, Yb, Sm, Nd) have been made with using barium oxide initial powder instead of traditional barium carbonate. X-ray powder diffraction showed a single phase orthorhombic perovskite structure was produced in all reactions. Phenomena observed during the grinding of the reactant mixture are presented. Mechano-chemical activation - as a pretreatment of the reactant mixture - strongly influences the kinetic parameters, the reaction mechanism, and the composition and structure of the final product.

  • To analyze the diffraction properties of optical signals by periodic blazed 2D diffraction gratings, Toeplitz dielectric tensor is first defined and formulated by 2D spatial Fourier expansions associated with asymmetric blazed grating profile. The characteristic modes in each layer is then based on eigenvalue problem, and the complete solution is found rigorously in terms of modal transmission-line theory (MTLT) to address the pertinent boundary-value problems. Toeplitz matrix of symmetric and sawtooth profiles is derived from that of asymmetric blazed grating profile, and the diffraction properties for each profile are numerically simulated. The numerical results reveal that the asymmetric and symmetric profiles behave as anti-reflection GMR filter while the sawtooth profile works better as anti-transmission one rather than anti-reflection filter.

  • A new method was introduced to distinguish the ferrite, bainite and martensite in transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) steel by using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). EBSD is a very powerful microstructure analysis technique at the length scales ranging from tens of nanometers to millimeters. However, iron BCC phases such as ferrite, bainite and martensite cannot be easily distinguished by EBSD due to their similar surface morphology and crystallographic structure. Among the various EBSD-based methodology, image quality (IQ) values, which present the perfection of a crystal lattice, was used to distinguish the iron BCC phases. IQ values are very useful tools to discern the iron BCC phases because of their different density of crystal defect and lattice distortion. However, there are still remaining problems that make the separation of bainite and martensite difficult. For instance, these phases have very similar IQ values in many cases, especially in deformed region; therefore, even though the IQ value was used, it has been difficult to distinguish the bainite and martensite. For more precise separation of bainite and martensite, IQ threshold values were determined by a correlative TEM analysis. By determining the threshold values, iron BCC phases were successfully separated.

  • This paper describes two different theories used to model the scattering of ultrasound by a volumetric flaw and a crack-like flaw. The elastodynamic Kirchhoff approximation (EKA) and the geometrical theory of diffraction (GTD) are applied respectively to a cylindrical cavity and a semi-infinite crack. These methods are known as high frequency approximations. The 2-D elastodynamic scattering problems of a plane wave incident on these model defects are considered and the scattered fields are expressed in terms of the reflection and diffraction coefficients. The ratio of the scattered far field amplitude to the incident wave amplitude is computed as a function of the angular location and compared with the boundary element solutions.
