  • The present study focuses on the effect of staggered integration factor (SIF) on Morton effect simulation results. The Morton effect is a synchronous rotordynamic instability problem caused by the temperature differential across the journal in fluid film bearings. Convection and conduction of heat in the thin film displaces the hot spot, which is the hottest circumferential position in the thin film, from -20 to 40 degrees ahead of the high spot, where the minimum film clearance is experienced. The temperature differential across the journal causes a bending moment and the corresponding thermal bow in the rotating frame acts like a distributed synchronous excitation in the fixed frame. This thermal bow may cause increased vibrations and continued growth of the synchronous orbit into a limit cycle. The SIF is developed assuming that the response of the rotor-lubricant-bearing dynamic system is much quicker than that of the bearing-journal thermal system, and it is defined as the ratio between the simulation time of the thermal system and the rotor-spinning period. The use of the SIF is unavoidable for efficient computing. The value of the SIF is chosen empirically by the software users as a value between 100 and 400. However, the effect of the SIF on Morton effect simulation results has not been investigated. This research produces simulation results with different values of SIF.

  • A Ni-Ti-B alloy powder prepared by mechanical alloying (MA) of individual Ni, Ti, and B components is examined with the aim of elucidating the phase transitions and crystallization during heat treatment. Ti and B atoms penetrating into the Ni lattice result in a Ni (Ti, B) solid solution and an amorphous phase. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) reveals peaks related to the decomposition of the metastable Ni (Ti, B) solid solution and the separation of equilibrium $Ni_3Ti$, $TiB_2$, and ${\tau}-Ni_20Ti_3B_6$ phases. The exothermal effects in the DTA curves move to lower temperatures with increasing milling time. The formation of a $TiB_2$ phase by annealing indicates that the mechanochemical reaction of the Ni-Ti-B alloy does not comply with the alloy composition in the ternary phase diagram, and Ti-B bonds are found to be more preferable than Ni-B bonds.

  • This research studies thermo-elastic behavior of rotating micro discs that are employed in various micro devices such as micro gas turbines. It is assumed that material is functionally graded with a variable profile thickness, density, shear modulus and thermal expansion in terms of radius of micro disc and as a power law function. Boundary condition is considered fixed-free with uniform thermal loading and elastic field is symmetric. Using incompressible material's constitutive equation, we extract governing differential equation of four orders; to solution this equation, we utilize general differential quadrature (GDQ) method and the results are schematically pictured. The obtained result in a particular case is compared with another work and coincidence of results is shown. We will find out that surface effect tends to split micro disc's area to compressive and tensile while nonlocal parameter tries to converge different behaviors with each other; this convergence feature make FGIMs capable to resist in high temperature and so in terms of thermo-elastic behavior we can suggest, using FGIMs in micro devices such as micro turbines (under glass transition temperature).

  • Initial thermo-elastic and steady state creep deformation of a rotating functionally graded simple blade is studied using first-order shear deformation theory. A variable thickness model for cantilever beam has been considered. The blade geometry and loading are defined as functions of length so that one can define his own blade profile and loading using any arbitrary function. The blade is subjected to a transverse distributed load, an inertia body force due to rotation and a distributed temperature field due to a thermal gradient between the tip and the root. All mechanical and thermal properties except Poisson's ratio are assumed to be longitudinally variable based on the volume fraction of reinforcement. The creep behaviour is modelled by Norton's law. Considering creep strains in stress strain relation, Prandtl-Reuss relations, Norton' law and effective stress relation differential equation in term of effective creep strain is established. This differential equation is solved numerically. By effective creep strain, steady state stresses and deflections are obtained. It is concluded that reinforcement particle size and form of distribution of reinforcement has significant effect on the steady state creep behavior of the blade.

  • The present study proposes a theoretical and numerical investigation on the dynamic response behaviour of a functional graded (FG) ceramic-metal tapered rotor shaft system, by the differential quadrature finite elements method (DQFEM) to identify the natural frequencies for modelling and analysis of the structure with suitable validations. The purpose of this paper is to explore the influence of heat gradients on the natural frequency of rotation of FG shafts via three-dimensional solid elements, as well as a theoretical examination using the Timoshenko beam mode, which took into account the gyroscopic effect and rotational inertia. The functionally graded material's distribution is described by two distribution laws: the power law and the exponential law. To simulate varied thermal conditions, radial temperature distributions are obtained using the nonlinear temperature distribution (NLTD) and exponential temperature distribution (ETD) approaches. This work deals with the results of the effect on the fundamental frequencies of different material's laws gradation and temperature gradients distributions. Attempts are conducted to identify adequate explanations for the behaviours based on material characteristics. The effect of taper angle and material distribution on the dynamic behaviour of the FG conical rotor system is discussed.

  • The kinetic analysis of energetic materials using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) is proposed. Friedman Isoconversional method is applied to DSC experiment data and AKTS software is used for analysis. The frequency factor and activation energy are extracted as a function of product mass fraction. The extracted kinetic scheme does not assume multiple chemical steps to describe the response of energetic materials; instead, multiple set of Arrhenius factors are used in describing a single global step. The proposed kinetic scheme has considerable advantage over the standard method based on One-Dimenaionl Time to Explosion (ODTX). Reaction rate and product mass fraction simulation are conducted to validate extracted kinetic scheme. Also a slow cook-off simulation is implemented for validating the applicability of the extracted kinetics scheme to a practical thermal experiment.

  • The effects of thermal properties on the crystallization behavior of $CaMgSi_2O_6$ glass-ceramics were investigated as a function of sintering temperature from 800$^{\circ}C$ to 900$^{\circ}C$. The crystallization behavior of the specimens depended on the sintering temperature, which could be evaluated from the differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. With increasing sintering temperature, the thermal conductivity of the sintered specimens increased, while the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the sintered specimens decreased. These results could be attributed to the increase of crystallization, confirmed from the estimation by density measurements. Also, the thermal diffusivity and specific heat capacity of the sintered specimens were discussed with relation to the sintering temperature. Typically, a thermal conductivity of 3.084 $W/m^{\circ}C$, CTE of 8.049 $ppm/^{\circ}C$, thermal diffusivity of 1.389 $mm^2/s$ and specific heat capacity of 0.752 $J/g^{\circ}C$ were obtained for $CaMgSi_2O_6$ specimens sintered at 900$^{\circ}C$ for 5 h.

  • An analysis method for the reliability of ceramic structures subjected to thermal shocks is presented. Flaws with the size of given probability distribution function are assumed to be distributed at random with a certain density per unit volume in the structures. Criterions for crack instability are derived for brittle solids under general thermal stresses. A probabilistic failure model is presented to study the probability of crack instability for brittle solids containing cracks with uncertain size. The reliabilities of brittle structures are evaluated based on the weakest-link hypothesis, which states that a structure fails when the cracks in any differential volume become unstable. A numerical example is given to demonstrate the application of the proposed method.

  • Cracking of concrete is one of the main issues of structural design next to ensuring the load-bearing capacity. Thermal cracking is a recurring concern in the production of concrete structures in particular when large, massive structures are considered. Thremal stresses arise from the differential temperature distribution either within s sturcture or between newly cast sectons and adjoining older parts. There are many different methods of reducing thermal stresses. A method often used for reducing temperature within a structure, is to cool the inner core with embedded cooling pipes. In this study, finite element method is employed for thermal analysis of concrete structures. To calculate water temperature variation in pipe, the conservation of thermal energy in internal flow was adopted. The cooling effect of pipe cooling is studied with several factors like convective coefficient, water temperature, concrete heat characteristics
