  • Solid materials of ammonia sources with SCR have been considered for the application of lean NOx reduction in automobile industry, to overcome complex problems of liquid urea based SCR. These solid materials produce ammonia gas directly with proper heating and can be packaged by compact size, because of high volumetric ammonia density. Among ammonium salts and metal ammine chlorides, calcium ammine chloride was focused on this paper due to low decomposition temperature. In order to make calcium ammine chloride in lab-scale, simple reactor and glove box was designed and built with ammonium gas tank, regulator, and sensors. Basic test conditions of charging ammonia gas to anhydrous calcium chloride are chosen from equilibrium vapor pressure by Van't Hoff plot based on thermodynamic properties of materials. Synthetic method of calcium ammine chloride were studied for different durations, temperatures, and pressures with proper ammonia gas charged, as a respect of ammonia gas adsorption rate(%) from simple weight calculations which were confirmed by IC. Also, lab-made calcium ammine chloride were analyzed by TGA and DSC to clarify decomposition step in the equations of chemical reaction. To understand material characteristics for lab-made calcium ammine chloride, DA, XRD and FT-IR analysis were performed with published data of literature. From analytical results, water content in lab-made calcium ammine chloride can be discovered and new test procedures of water removal were proposed.

  • The acid modification of waxy rice starch was conducted to improve the yugwa production process. The intrinsic viscosity, paste viscosity, and differential scanning calorimetry characteristics of acid modified starch were measured, and bandaegi and yugwa prepared from acid modified starch were evaluated. The intrinsic viscosities of acid thinned starches were 1.48, 1.27, 1.15, and 0.91 mL/g after reaction times of 1, 2, 3, and 4 hr, respectively. The gelatinization enthalpy was reduced from 16.3 J/g in native starch to 15.8, 15.3, 14.7, and 14.5 J/g in acid thinned starches as the time of acid thinning increased. The peak viscosity and final viscosity decreased with increasing the time of acid thinning, but the pasting temperature was slightly increased in acid thinned starches. The hardness of bandaegi from acid thinned starches under high pressure greatly decreased relative to the control, typical yugwa. Yugwa from acid thinned starch under high pressure maintained a homogeneous structure containing tiny and uniform cells similar to that of native waxy rice starch used for typical yugwa. Acid thinning under high pressure appears to be a good alternative to the existing steeping process for better yugwa quality.

  • The present research investigated copper and cadmium stress-induced differentially expressed genes (DEGs) using annealing control primers (ACP) with the differential display reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction technique in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. cv. Vernal) leaves. Alfalfa leaves were subjected to $250{\mu}M$ of copper and cadmium treatment for a period of 6 h. A total of 120 ACPs was used. During copper and cadmium treatment, 6 DEGs were found to be up or down regulated. During copper stress treatment, 1 DEG was up-regulated, and 3 novel genes were discovered. Similarly, during cadmium stress treatment, 1 DEG was up-regulated and 5 novel genes were identified. Among all 6 DEGs, DEG-4 was identified as the gene for trans-2,3-enoyl-CoA reductase, DEG-5 was identified as the gene for senescence-associated protein DIN1 and DEG-6 was identified for caffeic acid O-methyltransferase. All the up-regulated genes may play a role in copper and cadmium stress tolerance in alfalfa.

  • To tolerate environmentally adverse conditions such as cold, drought, and salinity, plants often synthesize and accumulate proline in cells as compatible osmolytes. ${\Delta}^1$-Pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase(P5CS) catalyzes the rate-limiting step of proline biosynthesis from glutamate. Two complete genes, MtP5CS1 and MtP5CS2, were isolated from the model legume Medicago truncatula by cDNA cloning and bacterial artificial chromosome library screening. Nucleotide sequence analysis showed that both genes consisted of 20 exons and 19 introns. Alignment of the predicted amino acid sequences revealed high similarities with P5CS proteins from other plant species. The two MtP5CS genes were expressed in response to high salt and low temperature treatments. Semi-quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction showed that MtP5CS1 was expressed earlier than MtP5CS2, indicating differential regulation of the two genes. To evaluate the reverse genetic effects of nucleotide changes on MtP5CS function, a Targeting Induced Local Lesions in Genomes approach was taken. Three mutants each were isolated for MtP5CS1 and MtP5CS2, of which a P5CS2 nonsense mutant carrying a codon change from arginine to stop was expected to bring translation to premature termination. These provide a valuable genetic resource with which to determine the function of the P5CS genes in environmental stress responses of legume crops.

  • Glucose is a major source of metabolic fuel and lipid and protein syntheses. Transport of glucose into the cell is regulated by an action of glucose transport.associated transporters, especially solute carriers 2A (Slc2a, protein symbol GLUT). The present study was focused on examination of mRNA expression of various Slc2a isoforms in the epididymis during postnatal development. Total RNAs isolated from different epididymal segments (caput, corpus, and caudal epididymis) were utilized for real-time polymerase chain reaction analyses. Results showed that Slc2a 1, 3, 4, 5, and 8 were expressed in the entire epididymal regions. In addition, the abundance of these Slc2a isoforms' transcripts was different within each epididymal regions. Moreover, the present study showed differential expression of these Slc2a isoforms among different epididymal segments according to postnatal ages. The current study suggests that glucose transport in the epididymis via various Slc2a isoforms would be necessary for maintenance of the epididymal functions.

  • The oxidative coupling of methane was studied kinetically using $Na^+(50wt%)/MgO$ catalyst at 710, 730, 750, 770 and $790^{\circ}C$ in a fixed bed flow reactor at the atmospheric pressure under differential conversion conditions. Through curve fitting, it was found that the Langmuir-Hinshelwood type mechanism was fitted to this reaction rather than Rideal-Redox type or Eley-Rideal type mechanism. Therefore, it was proposed that the $O_2{^-}$ or $O_2{^{2-}}$ species on the surface was related to the production of $CH_3{\cdot}$. The estimated activation energy of $CH_3{\cdot}$ production was about 39.3kcal/mol. Moreover, as the result of curve fitting, the stoichiometric coefficient of $O_2$ for the production of $CH_3{\cdot}$ to produce $CO_x$was approximately 1.5. Accordingly, it could be concluded that the $CH_3O_2{\cdot}*$ was prouduced through the partial oxidation of $CH_3{\cdot}$ with the surface oxygen.

  • The addition of a limestone filler(LF) to fill into the voids between cement and aggregate particles can reduce the cementitious paste volume. In previous studies, it has been found that the addition of LF to reduce the cementitious paste volume would substantially increase the compressive strength, and reduce the heat generation. This paper aim to evaluate the influence of LF contents on the hydration kinetics and compressive strength. Hydration kinetics were evaluate using heat of hydration, ignition loss and thermal analysis. The heat of hydration was measured using Isothermal Calorimetry. The degree of hydration was measured using ignition loss. Hydration product analysis was carried out by Thermal Gravimetric and Differential Thermal Analysis. The results show that the addition of LF reduces not only the initial setting time and heat of hydration peak, also degree of hydration and rate of strength development at early age increase with the addition of LF. It can be concluded the LF fills the pore between cement particles due to formation of carboaluminate, which may accelerate the setting of cement pastes.

  • Molecular cloning revealed the three isoforms($Ca_v3.1,\;Ca_v3.2,\;and\;Ca_v3.3$) of the T-type calcium channel subfamily. Expression studies exhibited their distinctive electrophysiological and pharmacological properties, accounting for diverse properties of T-type calcium channel currents previously characterized from isolated cells. However, electrophysiological properties of ion channels have shown to be more diversified by their splice variants. We here searched splice variants of rat $Ca_v3.1$ T-type channel by reverse-transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) to further explore diversity of $Ca_v3.1$. Interestingly, analyses of cloned RT-PCR products displayed that there were at least four splicing variants of rat $Ca_v3.1$ in the loop connecting repeats III and IV. Southern blot analyses indicated that the predominantly detected variant in brain was $Ca_v3.1a$(492 bp), which were rarely detected in most of peripheral tissues. Other two variants($Ca_v3.1c$, 546 bp; $Ca_v3.1d$, 525 bp) were detected in most of the tissues examined. The smallest isoform($Ca_v3.1b$, 471 bp) was rarely detected all the tissues. Electrophysiological characterization of the splicing variants indicated that the splice variants differ in inactivation kinetics and the voltage dependence of activation and inactivation as well.

  • In this work, diglycidylether of bisphenol-S (DGEBS) epoxy resin was prepared by alkaline condensation of bisphenol-S (BPS) with epichlorohydrin (ECH) in the presence of NaOH catalyst. The structure of the synthesized DGEBS epoxy resin was confirmed by IR, NMR spectra, and elemental analysis. The curing reaction and glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of DGEBS epoxy resin cured with phthalic anhydride (PA) and tetrahydrophthalic anhydride (THPA) at curing agents were studied by dynamic differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The thermal stability of the cured specimen was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). As a result, the activation energy ($E_a$) of DGEBS/PA system was higher than that of DGEBS/THPA system, whereas $T_g$, initial decomposed temperature (IDT), and decomposition activation energy ($E_t$) of DGEBS/PA were lower than those of DGEBS/THPA. This was probably due to the fact that the crosslinking density of DGEBS/THPA was increased by ring strain of curing agent.

  • Solid polymer electrolytes based on poly(ethylene glycol)-polyurethane (PEG-PU) complexed with LiClO$_4$ salt have been prepared by the solvent casting method. A PEG-PU material (PEG:4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate: l,4-butanediol = 1:2:1) was synthesized through a typical two-step condensation reaction. We investigated the effects of the salt concentration on the ionic conductivity ($\sigma$) and the glass transition temperature (T$_{g}$ ) of the complex electrolytes by using alternating current impedance spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The measured values of both $\sigma$ and T$_{g}$ exhibited similar tendencies in that they had maxima within the range studied, probably because of two opposite effects, i.e., the increased number of carrier ions and the decreased chain mobility (or increased T$_{g}$ ) caused by the increase in the salt concentration. The highest conductivity, on the order of 2.43 ${\times}$ 10$^{6}$ S$cm^{-1}$ /, was obtained at an [O]/[Li$^{+}$] ratio of ca. 16 (0.92 ㏖ salt per kg of matrix polymer).
