  • A low temperature difference model Stirling engine is a small Stirling engine running with several degree of temperature difference without power output. In this study, the design parameters to give maximum power are discussed. As results, the phase angle is about 100 degree, and compression ratio is 1.5% of the ratio of heat source temperatures at maximum power condition.

  • Gasoline Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustion is a new combustion concept. Unlike the conventional internal combustion engine, the premixed fuel mixture with high residual gas rate is auto-ignited and burned without flame propagation. There are several operating factors which affect HCCI combustion such as start of combustion (SOC), residual gas fraction, engine rpm, etc. Among these factors SOC is a critical factor in the combustion because it affects exhaust gas emissions, engine power, fuel economy and combustion characteristics. Therefore SOC of gasoline HCCI should be controlled precisely, and SOC detection should be preceded SOC control. This paper presents a control oriented SOC detection method using 50 percent normalized difference pressure. Normalized difference pressure is defined as the normalized value of difference pressure and difference pressure is difference between the in-cylinder firing pressure and the motoring pressure. These methods were verified through the HCCI combustion experiments. The SOC detection method using difference pressure provides a fast and precise SOC detection.

  • Ringbom Stirling engine which is a kind of low temperature difference model Stirling engine is manufactured and its characteristics are measured at some temperature differences. Pressure, displacer position and rotation speed are measured. Displacer position and rotation speed are detected by photo-sensor. The hot side of Ringbom Stirling engine is warmed by electric heater. The cold side of Ringbom Stirling engine is cooled by the air. This result may be useful for further design and manufacture of Ringbom Stirling engine. Also, it would be used as an educational material for mechanical engineering students.

  • To design an optimum engine intake system, a flow model for the intake manifold was developed by the finite difference method. The flow in the intake manifold was one-dimensional, and the finite difference equations were derived from governing equations of flow, continuity, momentum and energy. The thermodynamic properties of the cylinder were found by the first law of thermodynamics, and the boundary conditions were formulated using steady flow model. By comparing the calculated results with experimental data, the appropriate boundary conditions and convergence limits for the flow model were established. From this model, the optimum manifold lengths at different engine operating conditions were investigated. The optimum manifold length became shorter when the engine speeds were increased. The effect of intake valve timings on inlet air mass was also studied by this model. Advancing intake valve opening decreased inlet air mass slightly, and the optimum intake valve closing was found. The difference in inlet air mass between cylinders was very small in this engine.

  • The Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO) has developed a test module that can vertically ascend and descend with a buoyancy engine to verify the performance of the developed buoyancy engine. The independent test module has been tested in the Ocean Engineering Basin(C.M.Lee et al., 2023). After that, more tests were performed in the Deep Ocean Engineering Basin and at sea. In the 50-meter depth pit test of the Deep Ocean Engineering Basin, there were no problems with the ascent and descent operations, but the buoyancy engine was not properly maintained due to various problems in the independent test module, resulting in a difference between the calculated results using the solution of the equations of motion and the actual measurement results. The East Sea test was conducted at a depth of approximately 110 meters north-east of Pohang, with a dive to 100 meters. The difference between the pressure sensor value and the calculated value was observed, but after checking the results of the underwater position tracking device(USBL, Ultra Short Base Line system), it was estimated that the difference was caused by the influence of the current.

  • A two-stroke diesel engine and a propeller normally adopted in large merchant ships are regarded as major ship vibration sources. They are directly connected and generate various excitation components proportional to the rotating speed of diesel engine. Among the components, the magnitude of two excitation components with the same frequency generated by both engine and propeller can be compensated by the adjustment of their phase difference. It can be done by the optimization of propeller assembly angle but requires a number of burdensome trials to find the optimal angle. In this paper, the efficient estimation method to determine optimal propeller assembly angle is proposed. Its application requires the axial vibration measurement in sea trial and the numerical vibration analysis for propulsion shafting which can be substituted by additional vibration measurement after one-trial modification of propeller assembly angle. In order to verify the validity of the proposed method, the phase difference between two fifth order excitation components generated by both diesel engine and propeller of a real ship is calculated by the finite element analysis and its result is indirectly validated by the comparison of axial vibration responses at intermediate shaft obtained by the numerical analysis and the measurement in sea trial. Finally, it is numerically confirmed that axial vibration response at intermediate shaft at a resonant speed can be decreased more than 87 % if the optimal propeller assembly angle determined by the proposed method is applied.

  • One of the most probable reason of the apex seal damage in IR-2500 industrial Wankel (rotary) engine was believed to be the engine detonation. Both analytical and experimental studies were made with a view th find out engine detonation pressure. The stagnation detonation pressure $p_{03}$' was estimated based on the data from IR-2500 engine detonation tests, such as engine firing pressure, state of fresh charge at BDC and polytropic compression exponent. The estimated stagnation detonation pressure for the natural gas fueled IR-2500 engine was in excess of 3,700 psia. With natural gas liquid added to the natural gas the octane value of the fuel was lowered, thus, making the engine more prone to detonate. The estimated detonation pressure for the case with the mixed fuel was about 3,400 psia which was sufficiently high to break the apex seal. The subsequent engine lab tests performed on two identical engines with sole difference in the apex seal thickness between the two engines proved that the engine knock, in fact, was the villain of the apex seal failure.ilure.

  • In this paper, engine-CVT consolidated control performance were investigated experimentally. Engine-CVT consolidated control was composed of engine throttle control based on power difference and CVT ratio control based on CVT ratio map. Experimental results showed that engine optimal operation was obtained while satisfying the driver's desire, i. e., following the given drive mode by engine-CVT consolidated control. Also, it was found that engine performance is subjected to inertia of the powertrain where the magnitude of acceleration changes abruptyly. Comparing with the results of CVT only control, the results of engine-CVT consolidated control showed better performance. Therefore, in order to meet the driver's desire as well as keeping the engine optimal operation, the engine-CVT consolidated control could be suggested as an integral solution.

  • The Otto Cycle of conventional gasoline engine has no difference between compression ratio and expension ratio. because of the same length of 4 strokes : Intake, compression, expension, exhaust. On the other hand, miller cycle engine achieves both low-compression ratio and high-compression ratio by shortening the length of compression stroke among 4 strokes. Therefore miller cycle engine is essential for lessening knocking and improving heat efficiency. This paper Is designed to discribe not only principle and the development trend of miller cycle engine but also the control system and the technical characteristics of it.

  • A CRDI diesel engine used to commercial vehicle was fueled with diesel fuel and 5% biodiesel blended fuel (BDF 5%) and tested at the Seoul-10 mode for 150 hours. Engine dynamometer testing was completed at regularly scheduled intervals to monitor the engine performance and exhaust emissions. To check the engine parts (valve, injector), the engine was inspected after 150 hours running test. It was concluded that there was no unusual deterioration of the engine, or the changes in engine power (below 2.6%), smoke (below 6.2%), NOx (below 2%) and durability characteristics in spite of operation of 150 hours run with BDF 5%. The difference of kinetic viscosity for engine oil (before and after durability testing) was below 0.36%
