DME (Di-Methyl Ether) is synthetic product that is produced through dehydration of methanol or a direct synthesis from syngas. And it is able to save fossil fuel and reduce pollutants of emission such as PM and $CO_2$. In spite of its advantages it is difficult to design DME fuelled engine system because DME fuel may cause to severely generate cavitation and corrosion in fuel delivery system due to physical properties of DME. Therefore, in this study three-dimensional internal flow characteristics with consideration of cavitation were predicted in the DME injector using diesel and DME fuel. Moving grid technique was employed to describe needle motion and 1-D hydraulic simulation of injector was also simulated to obtain transient needle motion profiles. The results of simulation show that cavitations was generated at the inlet of nozzle near high velocity region both diesel and DME. And mass flow rate of DME is reduced by 4.73% compared to that of diesel at maximum valve lift because cavitation region of DME is much more larger. To increase flow rate of DME injector, internal flow simulation has been conducted to investigate the nozzle hole inner R-cut effect. The flow rates of diesel and DME increase as R-cut increases, and flow coefficient of DME fuel injector was increased by 6.3% on average compared with diesel fuelled injector. Finally, optimum shape of DME injector nozzle is suggested through the comparison of flow coefficient with variation of nozzle hole inner R-cut.
This paper present the diesel fuel spray evolution and atomization performance in a multi-hole nozzle in terms of injection rate, spray evolutions, and mean diameter and velocity of droplets in a compression ignition engine. In order to study the effect of split injection on the diesel fuel spray and atomization characteristic in a multi-hole nozzle, the test nozzle that has two-row small orifice with 0.2 mm interval was used. The time based fuel injection rate characteristics was analyzed from the pressure variation generated in a measuring tube. The spray characteristics of a multi-hole nozzle were visualized and measured by spray visualization system and phase Doppler particle analyzer (PDPA) system. It was revealed that the total injected fuel quantities of split injection are smaller than those of single injection condition. In case of injection rate characteristics, the split injection is a little lower than single injection and the peak value of second injection rate is lower than single injection. The spray velocity of split injection is also lower because of short energizing duration and small injection mass. It can not observe the improvement of droplet atomization due to the split injection, however, it enhances the droplet distributions at the early stage of fuel injection.
This experimental study is to investigate the intermittent spray characteristics of a multi-hole nozzle in a heavy-duty DI diesel engine. Multi 8 hole$(d_n=0.25mm)$, Multi 3 hole$(d_n=0.42)$ and Sing hole nozzle$(d_n=0.25mm)$ were used in this experiment. By using the 2-D PDPA(phase Doppler particle analyzer), the droplet diameter and the velocity of a diesel spray injected intermittently from the multi and the single-hole nozzle into a still ambient were measured. In order to calculate the mean values such as mean velocity, SMD, AMD etc. and to analyze the intermittent characteristics, the time-window of 0.15ms were applied. In the spray, the small droplet$(D<10{\mu}m)$ was regarded as an air flow, and the correlation between the fuel droplet$(10{\mu}m and the air (low was examined. The normalized axial droplet-air relative velocity of the 8 hole, the 3 hole and the single hole nozzle was evaluated as 0.081, 0.067, 0.06 and in case of the radial droplet-air relative velocity, the normalized. value is 0.014, 0.013 and 0.008 respectively.
The intermittent spray characteristics of a multi-hole diesel nozzle with a 2-spring nozzle holder were investigated experimentally. Without changing the total orifice exit area, the hole number of the multi-hole nozzle varied from 3 (d$\_$n/=0.42 mm) to 5 (d$\_$n/=0.32 mm). The time-resolved droplet diameters of the spray including the SMD (Saute. mean diameter) and the AMD (arithmetic mean diameter), injected intormittently from the multi-hole nozzles into still ambient ai., were measured by using a 2-D PDPA (phase Doppler particle analyze.). The 5-hole nozzle spray shows the smaller spray cone angle, the decreased SMD distributions and the small difference between the SMD and the AMD, compared with that of the 3-hole nozzle spray. From the SMD distributions with the radial distance, the spray structure can be classified into the three regions : (a) the inner region showing the high SMD distribution , (b) the mixing flow region where the shea. flow structure would be constructed : and (c) the outer region formed through the disintegration processes of the spray inner region and composed of fine droplets. Through the SMD distributions along the spray centerline, it reveals that the SMD decreases rapidly after showing the maximum value in the vicinity of the nozzle tip. The SMD remains the constant value near the Z/d$\_$n/=166 and 156.3 for the 3-hole and 5-hole nozzles, which illustrate that the disintegration processes of the 5-hole nozzle spray proceed more rapidly than that of the 3-hole nozzle spray.
This paper presents the characteristics of fuel spray in a diesel engine. In this paper, in order to obtain spray droplet size in a diesel engine, water was injected into the cylinder at room temperature and pressure by injection system. Spray droplet size was measured by liquid immersion technique with a lubricant used as an immersion liquid for spray water from injection nozzle. In this experiment, single hole type throttle nozzle are used at same operating conditions, which included opening pressure of nozzle, fuel delivery, and injection speed. Sauter mean diameter decrease with the increase of injection pressure and decrease in injection nozzle diameter. The rate of spray penetration increased with increasing injection pressure and diameter of injection nozzle at the constant spray conditions.
This paper presents the atomization characteristics of single hole injector in the direct injection type diesel engine. The spray characteristics of fuel injector such as the droplet size and velocity were measured by phase Doppler particle analyzer. In this paper, the atomization characteristics of fuel spray are investigated for the experimental analysis of the measuring data by the results of mean diameter and mean velocity of droplet. The effect of fuel injection pressure on the droplet size shows that the higher injection pressure results in the decrease of mean droplet diameter in the fuel spray. The minimum size of fuel spray droplet appears on the location of 40mm axial distance from nozzle exit of diesel injector. Based on the experimental results, the correlation between the droplet diameter and mean velocity of the diesel spray due to the change of axial and radial distance from the nozzle tip were investigated.
The intermittent spray characteristics of a multi-hole and a single-hole diesel nozzle were experimentally investigated. The hole number of the multi-hole nozzle was 5, and the hole diameter of the 5-hole and the single-hole nozzle was the same as d$\_$n/=0.32 ㎜ with the constant hole length to diameter ratio(l$\_$n//d$\_$n/=2.81). The droplet diameters of the spray, including the time-resolved droplet diameter, SMD (Sauter mean diameter) and AMD (arithmetic mean diameter) , injected intermittently from the two nozzles into the still ambient were measured by using a 2-D PDPA (phase Doppler particle analyzer). Through the time-resolved evolutions of the droplet diameter, it was found that the structure of the multi-hole and the single-hole nozzle spray consisted of the three main parts : (a) the leading edge affected by surrounding air. and composed of small droplets; (b) the central part surrounded by the leading edge and mixing flow region and scarcely affected by the resistance of air, (c) the trailing edge formed by the passage of the central part. The SMD decreases gradually with the increase in the radial distance, and the constant value is obtained at the outer region of the radial distance (normalized by hole diameter) of 7-8 and 6 for the 5-hole and single-hole nozzle, respectively. The SMD along the centerline of the spray decrease shapely with the increase in the axial distance after showing the maximum value near the nozzle tip. The SMD remains the constant value near the axial distance(normalized by hole diameter) of 150 and 180 for the 5-hole and the single-hole nozzle, respectively.
An object of this study is to understand the correlation of injection characteristics and injector dimensions according to biodiesel mixture. The Injection characteristics of different types of common-rail injectors are the number of nozzle holes (5~8), jet cone angle ($146^{\circ}{\sim}153^{\circ}$), hydraulic flow rate (830~900 ml/min) injection quantity and response time. Prior to characteristic experiment, the reference injector has been selected in 6 candidates injectors under the investigation of injected quantity according to the biodiesel mixture so that injector type can be determined. The injector is used for the characteristic experiment which varied the various operating conditions including pressure 23 MPa, 80 MPa, 160 MPa, changing in injection duration 0.16 ms~1.2 ms and even mixture ratio. The result shows that the nozzle hole number and cone angle influence the injection quantity much more than nozzle hole diameter at low injection pressure and the nozzle hole diameter at high injection pressure, post injection duration.

Numerical simulations have been carried out to investigate the effect of nozzle hole geometry on the combustion characteristics of the large diesel engine. 6S90MC-C. Spray and combustion phenomena were examined numerically using FIRE code. Wane breakup and Zeldovich models were adopted to describe the atomization characteristics and NOx formation processes. Predictions on the cylinder peak pressure and NOx emission were first verified with the experimental data to confirm the reliability of numerical calculations. The comparison results showed good agreements within the range of 0.64% and 4.6% respectively. Finally, the effects of fuel spray angle and diameter on the engine performance were investigated numerically to find the optimum nozzle hole geometry considering fuel consumption, NOx emission and heat flux of the combustion chamber wall. It was concluded that the combustion gas recirculation in cylinder by changing fuel injection direction is an effective method to reduce NOx emission by about 10% with increasing fuel oil consumption, 1.4% in a large diesel engine.

The effects of fuel injection system on the performance in a V8-type diesel engine was stuided in this paper. Fuel injection system is important factor which influence the engine performance and exhaust emission bcasuse the properties in the injected fuel depend on the atomization characteristics. In this study using diesel engine of 17.7:1 compression ration the engine performance and exhaust emission are measured experimentally according to 1000, 1400, 2200rpm in the full-load conditions. The chosen parameters for the major system are such diameter shape of combustion chamber and intake system. The results are as follows: As the nozzle hole diameter and injection angle become smaller and as the injection timing gets advanced the fuel consumption and concentration of smoke are decreasing whereas concentration of $NO_{x}$ is increasing. Andconcentration of $NO_{x}$ is increasing in accordance with the increase of injection pipe diameter and nozzle protrusion. Also it is shown that re-entrant type combustion chamber is more effective than that of toroidal type in the improvement of $NO_{x}$ reduction.
