Analysis of the Impinging Spray Behavior Accompanying with Change of Phase (상변화를 동반한 충돌분무의 거동해석)

  • The emission in the exhaust gas from diesel engine is effected by the fuel spray characteristics. The spray of D.I. diesel engine impinges on a piston cavity and a cylinder wall. It is very important to know exactly the distribution and behavior of the spray inside cylinder. The objective of this study is to develop more accurate evaporation model. The EPISO code was used to analyze the flow characteristics in the engine. The Wakil model and the Faeth model are applied to the EPISO code to analyze the behavior of impinging spray. And also experimental and numerical analysis were carried out. The spray behavior characteristics were investigated by changing injection pressure, ambient pressure and temperature. The behavior of impinging spray was strongly effected by the change of ambient pressure and temperature. The effects of evaporation and rebounding droplet should be considered.

  • The capability of pilot injection with small fuel quantity at all engine operating conditions is one of the main feature of the common rail direct injection system. The purpose of the pilot injection is to lower the engine noise and to reduce the NOx emissions. This study describes the pilot spray structure characteristics of the common-rail diesel injectors with different electric driving characteristics, including solenoid-driven and piezo-driven type. Namely three common-rail injectors with different electric current wave were investigated in this study. The pilot spray characteristics such as spray speed, spray tip penetration, and spray angle were obtained by spray images, which is measured by the back diffusion light illumination method with optical system for high-speed temporal photography. As this research results, it was found that pilot injection of common-rail system was effected by rate of injection with different electrical characteristic for driving the injector.

  • The International maritime organization(IMO), in an effort to slow down the global warming, proposes reduction in ship's speed as a way to lower the rate emissions from ships. In addition, since ship's fuel cost have been increased, the shipping volumes, fuel-saving technology are being required urgently. Therefore, in this present study, a method of reducing the fuel cost that can improve the performance of the diesel engine was tried by introducing a predetermined amount (0.1~0.3% of the mass amount of fuel used) of hydrogen fuel additive. The experimental conditions of the test engine were 1500rpm and torque BMEP-10b ar. The engine performances (power output, fuel consumption rate, p-max, exhaust temperature) were compared before and after addition of hydrogen fuel additives. This experimental study confirmed reducing at least 2% fuel consumption and 2.19% NOx emission.

  • Fuel injection system is very important in diesel combustion. Recently electronic control of fuel injection system and common rail systems are introduced to reduce the emission and to increase the energy efficiency from diesel engine by control of the injection timing and duration. In this study, evaluation possibility of the system for electronic control by spool valve, one of the accumulator type injection systems with spool valve using solenoid was composed and the operating characteristics were investigated to evaluate the effects of spring coefficient, initial spring force, solenoid driving time, fuel supply pressure on the injection timing and duration. We could confirm the capability that diesel injection was electronically controlled by spool valve.

A Modeling about Penetration Behavior of Diesel Engine Liquid Fuel Spray (디젤기관의 분무선단 도달거리에 관한 모델링)

  • The study on the penetration of sprays during the initial phase of injection period, i.e. ignition delay period, in high speed small D.I. diesel engines are strongly affected by such behavior. To investigate the penetration of the sprays injected through single cylinderical orifice, a mathematical model was developed and compared with experimental results. In this model, radial heterogeneity of fuel density in the spray, transiency of injection pressure difference, and spray outrunning phenomenon were considered simultaneously. Experiments on the behaviors of sprays in the high pressure air chamber were conducted at various injection pressure differences and different levels of back air pressure. The behaviors of sprays injected into the chamber through the conventional Bosch injection pump were visualized with side stroboscopic illumination. Comparison of the experimental results with predictions from the mathematical model confirmed the validity of the model. It was also found that during the initial phase of the injection period the penetration of sprays vs. time appeared to have two transition points; one corresponded to disintegration point of liquid fuel jet, the other to the beginning of steady state injection.

  • The biodiesel becomes one of the favorite alternative fuel applied to diesel engines. This research aims to understand the physics of spray and combustion characteristics of a biodiesel fuel in a constant volume chamber. For spray visualization, biodiesel was injected into a combustion chamber and a high speed camera was applied at various combustion conditions. To investigate heat-release rates and flame propagations, spark was ignited on a hydrogen fuel for the premixed combustion and then biodiesel was injected directly. In addition, parametric study was made by various geometries of combustion chambers and temperatures of fuels and injection pressures. This technology may contribute to improve the performance of bio-diesel engine and reduce emissions in future.

  • In this study, the spray characteristics of blended fuels with biodiesel were investigated. The experiments were performed for the effect of mixing ratio and injection pressures on the spray behavior. Conventional diesel fuel and biodiesel fuel and blended fuels were used as test fuels. Through the spray visualization system, composed of a Halogen lamp and High speed camera. The process of spray injection was visualized. Fuel containing biodiesel has different spray pattern on account of the high viscosity and large surface tension. Through this experimental result, we found that, after solenoid driving pulse generates, the increase of injection pressure enables delay time to get shorter, but the increase of mixing ratio makes delay time lengthen.

  • This paper is study on simultaneous reduction of NOx and soot for direct injection diesel engine using high and low cetane fuels. The stratified injection system was applied for diesel engine to use high and low cetane fuel. In this study, diesel fuel was used as high cetane fuels, methanol was used as low cetane fuels. Some parts of the injection system, ie. Nozzle holder. delivery vale, was remodeled to inject dual fuel sequentially from one injector. The leak injection quantity ratio of dual fuel was certificated by volumetric ratio at injection quantity experiment. According as concentration of low cetane fuel was varied, combustion experiment was performed using Toroidal and Complex chamber. Also, exhaust gas and fuel consumption were measured at the same time. Simultaneous reduction of NOx and soot was achieved at complex chamber regardless of concentration of low cetane fuel. However, according as concentration of low cetane fuel was increased, THC and CO was increased.

  • Performance and emissions with different diesel injection methods were analyzed in a natural gas-diesel, dual-fuel engine under low-load conditions. Natural gas was supplied to intake port during the intake stoke to form a natural gas-air premixed mixture for all methods. Diesel was injected directly into the cylinder during the compression stroke in three ways: early injections, late injections, and a combination of early and late injections. The early injections had the highest thermal efficiency among the three methods owing to its highest combustion efficiency. The wide dispersion of diesel before the combustion initiation also allowed superior emissions characteristics.

  • The characteristics of free spray with ultra injection pressure was analyzed to clear the limit pressure of diesel engine. To obtain final goal, ultra high pressure injection equipment was developed, spray patterns were visualized under various ultra injection pressures. Spray penetration and spray width, volume and entrained air mass were increased with the increase of injection pressure. Sauter mean diameter and injection durstion wert decreased. But over 3,000bar of ultra injection pressure region the rates of increase show almost similar and finally the reversed tendencies at 4,140bar.
