  • Spray combustion has been used in many industrial fields, for instance, such as diesel engines, gas turbines and industrial furnaces, and furthermore various measurement techniques have been applied to elucidate the phenomenon of spray combustion. In order to measure simultaneously the droplet velocity and the droplet size of spray, Phase Doppler Anemometry (PDA) was frequently used in spray combustion. However, the measurement error is occurred due to existence of flame, which is considered as influencing the precision of measurement. Therefore, the purpose of this study is experimentally to conduct the systematic evaluation on the measurement error when PDA measurement is applied to combustion field.

  • In this paper, the combustion characteristics of marine diesel engines are investigated. Also, the pv diagrams of diesel engine and the torque harmonic coefficients are calculated. Their reliability are verified by comparing the calculated values with those of engine maker. The calculated results of torsional vibration with these theoretical harmonic coefficients show very good agreement with those of engine maker's results. The results of this study may be useful for the calculation of torsional vibration for diesel engine propulsion shafting, especially for 4-stroke engine which is not easy to get harmonics.

  • The evaluation of the noise for the an existing engine was carried out to improve the current noise level. The applied techniques were 1m air-borne noise, combustion noise analysis, torsional analysis at the front pulley and sound pressure intensity. In addition, the evaluation of the possibility to the noise reduction by means of wrapping the parts was performed to propose the detailed information in engine design. In view of the obtained results, the following countermeasures were recommended to reduce the current noise level through the above methods. Furthermore, in order to assess the influence of combustion noise on the overall engine noise, the noise test was also performed by the change of intake air temperature up to 5$0^{\circ}C$ in steps of 1$0^{\circ}C$. Finally, the fixed design specifications to reduce the engine noise will be decided in consideration of the test data for proto type engine.

  • It has been a principle research topic on the diesel engine development to increase the efficiency and the performance of engine to satisfy the user's needs for high reliability and durability. However, recently with the worldwide concerns at the global climate change and environmental protection, the main target in the diesel engine research has been changed to solve the exhaust emission problem in order to satisfy the strict emission regulations. To reduce the pollutant for the diesel engine, the researchs on the combustion chamber is the most important and has to be performed first of all. The diesel fuel injection system plays major role to air-fuel mixing process and influences engine output, themal efficiency, reliability, noise, and emissions. The experimental studies were conducted by varying the various parametric conditions and the results were campared with the computation and calculated results by using the fuel injection simulation program developed during previous research. From the experiments, the matching technique of a fuel injection pump and nozzle was conducted to understand under the various parametric conditions. Also, the relations between needle lift and wave propagation characteristics in high pressure pipe were examined. The basic design data from the experimentations and computation works would be applied to actual design works of diesel fuel injection system.

  • To obtain high power, diesel engines continuously increase combustion pressure and mean effective pressure each cylinder, and the excitation sources and noisy sources are increased, too. Moreover, to reduce the costs, shipyards make hull structures weaker than before. As above reasons, it is more difficult to control the vibration phenomenon nowadays. In this study, it was investigated why diesel generator sets reached the vibration allowable limits during the FAT and heavy vibration phenomenon of diesel generator sets using ODS test during onboard tests. Also, it is found out the stiffness of deck and common bed using the test result of their structural impedance. To find out the vibratory characteristics of diesel generator sets, MODAL tests were carried out. From the sensitivity analysis after above tests, it was selected points to be reinforced and studied troubleshooting to solve heavy vibration phenomenon of diesel generator sets.

  • Diesel power plant can be used as a power supplier for the isolated place where consumption of electric power is variable. The reason is that mobility and durability of diesel engine is superior to those of other thermal engines. However, there are some disadvantages for using these diesel engines such as bigger vibratory excitation force comparing to the others, which result from high combustion pressure of cylinders and inertia force of piston reciprocating masses. In this paper, control and optimization of torsional vibration of 12K90MC-S engine for diesel power plant using uneven crank angles is identified by theoretical analysis and vibration measurement.

  • The structural vibration of a diesel generator set was investigated through analyses and tests. FE modeling and normal mode analysis were performed and compared with measured results for both structure components and generator set assembly. The results of component analyses were fairly well coincident with measured results but those of assembled generator set showed more or less discrepancies. Discussions were given about the uncertainties for vibration characteristics of component structures and assembled running structures especially concerning their nonlinearities and damping effects. Detailed excitation analysis fellowed by forced response analysis was done from the engine and pressure data to compare with the actual measured vibration. As results the vibration prediction for frame structures of reciprocating internal combustion engine was confirmed reliable to some extent.

  • Marine diesel engine production and refinements sought a continuous increase on mean effective pressure and thermal efficiency. These results in increased maximum combustion pressure within the cylinder and vibratory torque in crankshaft. As such, crankshaft should be designed and compacted within its fatigue strength. In this paper, the 8H25/33P($3,155ps{\times}900rpm$) engine for ship propulsion was selected as a case study, and tile strength analysis of its crankshaft is carried out by. simplified method recommended by IACS M53 and a detailed method with the crankshaft assumed as a continuous beam and bearing supported in its flexibility. The results of these two methods are compared with each other.

  • The abnormal combustion in the running engine results to knocking which increases the pressure and temperature in the cylinder, thereby decreasing the generated power by reducing the thermal efficiency. When the temperature and pressure in the cylinder increased rapidly by knocking, abnormal combustion takes place and the engine power is decreased. To investigate the knocking phenomenon, accelerometers are installed in the cylinder head to monitor and diagnose the vibration signal. As method of signal analysis, the time-frequency analysis method was adapted for acquisition of vibration signal and analyzes engine combustion in the short time. In this experiment, after analyzing time data which is stored in the signal recorder in one unit work (4 strokes: 2 revolutions), the signal with frequency and Wavelet methods with extracted one engine combustion data was also analyzed. Then, normal condition with no knocking signal is analyzed at this time. Hereafter, the experiments made a standard for distinguishing normal and abnormal condition to be carried out in acquisition of vibration signal at all cylinders and extracting knocking signal. In addition, analyzing methods can be diverse with Symmetry Dot Patterns (SDP), Time Synchronous Average (TSA), Wigner-Ville Distribution (WVD), Wigner-Ville Spectrum (WVS) and Mean Instantaneous Power (MIP) in the cold test [2]. With signal processing of vibration from engine knocking sensor, the authors adapted a part of engine /rotor vibration analysis and monitoring system for marine vessels to prevent several problems due to engine knocking

  • Carbon monoxide (CO) is not only an important intermediate species in chemical reaction mechanisms of hydrocarbon fuel combustion, but also a crucial pollutant species emitted from automotive engines. To better understand the physical processes impacting CO emissions, the development of laser-based measurement techniques that can visualize in-cylinder CO distributions is desirable. Among these techniques, Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) is a sensitive and species-selective detection technique capable of good spatial resolution. However, some technical matters such as deep UV excitation, severe pressure dependency of the LIF signal, and potential interference from other species have been major challenges for CO LIF application. This study is focused on investigating the feasibility of CO two-photon LIF in a direct-injection diesel engine operating at typical pressure and temperature conditions with commercial grade diesel fuel. Spectroscopic analysis shows that the CO fluorescence signal can be separated from $C_2$ Swan band or broadband fluorescence from PAHs when the signal is collected near 483 nm. The signal-to-noise ratio of CO LIF deteriorate rapidly as pressure is increased, following $P^{-1.49}$ which matches the theoretical signal pressure dependency.
