  • In this paper. we present a method for a systematic design of a dielectric slab polarizer in the circular waveguide. This structure is realized using a tapered dielectric slab inside a circular waveguide. Commercial software is used to obtain the equivalent dielectric constant of the circular waveguide partially filled with a dielectric slab. The length of the tapered region is determined so that the reflection from the dielectric slab is sufficiently low. A polarizer operating at 10 GHz band is designed, fabricated and tested.

  • Generally, the waveguide phase-shifter has been analyzed by the modal expansion method. We can not apply this method in the case which is difficult to choose a nenerating function. In this paper, we are analyzed the rectangular waveguide phase shifter using the perturbation method. When the depth of dielectric slab is smaller then one half of the waveguide height, the experimental results are well agreed with the calculated values by this method.

  • This paper introduces a simple new procedure approach to determine the permittivity of dielectric slabs. The method uses a parallel plate waveguide which supports a TEM mode. The presence of the dielectric slab placed at the bottom of the waveguide makes the speed of the TEM wave slower. The relationship between the change of the speed and the permittivity of the dielectric slab allows the determination of the permittivity. The relationship is analyzed electromagnetically, and the results of measurements are in good agreement with the analysis.

  • In dielectric waveguide analysis and synthesis, we often encounter an awkward task of solving the eigenvalue equation to find the value of propagation constant. Since the dispersion equation is an irrational equation, we cannot solve it directly. Taking advantage of approximated calculation, we attempt here to solve this irrational dispersion equation. A new type of eigenvalue equation, in which guide index is expressed as a function of frequency, has been developed. In practical optical waveguide designing and in calculating the propagation mode, this equation will be used more conveniently than the previous one. To expedite the design of the waveguide, we then solve the eigenvalue equation of a slab waveguide, which is sufficiently accurate for practical purpose.

  • The dielectric slab waveguide is fabricated on the slide glass or oxidized silicon wafer, by spin coating polyurethane, epoxy or photoresist, and the phenomenon of dielectric waveguiding is oboerved. Using the fact that the refractive index of K.P.R. is larger than that of polyurethane, thin film prism with two layered structure is fabricated, and the refraction of light is observed.

  • A new type of a Rotman lens is presented in this paper fur millimeter-wave applications, such as collision avoidance radar. A dielectric slab Rotman lens is proposed to reduce the conductor loss and to create an appropriate farm for favorable implementation at millimeter-wave frequency. The proposed lens consists of a dielectric slab and slot lines whereas the conventional lenses are constructed with parallel conducting plates. The dielectric slab Rotman lens excited in TE$\_$0/ mode shows a high degree of confinement for the fields, low dispersion, and has an appropriate feed structure. A prototype lens has been designed and fabricated with 9 beam ports and 9 array ports together with 9 tapered slot antennas. This lens has been tested in the range from 10 GHz to 15 GHz and the measured beam widths are about 15$^{\circ}$ at 13 GHz. The measurements also show low mutual coupling between beam ports and an efficiency of about 34.6 %. The overall performance is comparable to that of conventional Rotman lenses even though the prototype was tested at lower than desired frequencies in the microwave frequency range due to our limited resources for fabrications and measurements. It is expected that at millimeter-wave frequency the dielectric slab Rotman lens will have lower conductor loss and lower mutual coupling than conventional Rotman lenses.an lenses.

  • In this paper, we propose the use of stochastic finite element method, that is popularly employed in mechanical structure analysis, for more practical designing purpose of RF device. The proposed method is formulated based on the vector finite element method cooperated by pertubation analysis. The method utilizes sensitivity analysis algorithm with covariance matrix of the random variables that represent for uncertain physical quantities such as length or various electrical constants to compute the probabilities of the measure of performance of the structure. For this computation one need to know the variance and covariance of the random variables that might be determined by practical experiences. The presenting algorithm has been verified by analyzing several device with different be determined by practical experiences. The presenting algorithm has been verified by analysis several device with different measure of performanes. For the convenience of formulation, two dimensional analysis has been performed to apply it into waveguide with dielectric slab. In the problem the dielectric constant of the dielectric slab is considered as random variable. Another example is matched waveguide and cavity problem. In the problem, the dimension of them are assumed to be as random variables and the expectations and variances of quality factor have been computed.

  • We propose a metal-dielectric hybrid waveguide structure consisting of a single metal nanowire placed on a flat dielectric slab. Mode size and propagation loss of the surface-plasmons confined in the metal-dielectric gap are compared with those of the complementary structure with a dielectric nanowire on a metal surface. In the case of the nanowire's diameter much smaller than the wavelength the two structures reveal quite different characteristics; the dielectric nanowire-on-metal has longer propagation distance, but only the metal nanowire-on-dielectric exhibits a mode size two fold smaller than the diffraction limit. The proposed hybrid structure may therefore be more suitable for realization of nanocavity lasers.

  • Using the transmission line model, we have developed a formalism which is fairly accurate and convenient for analyzing the dispersion characteristics of rectangular dielectric waveguides for integrated optics. The fields in open half space regions are expressed as a Fourier integral form. Including all the TE and TM polarized discrete modes in slab waveguide region, our calculation shows that the discrepancies between the previous vectorial wave analysis using one discrete mode and the brute-force numerical analysis for the rectangular dielectric waveguides can be fully reduced with this method.

  • In this study, the electromagnetic coupling through a narrow transverse slit in the upper wall of a parallel-plate waveguide(PPW) covered by a dielectric slab with a nearby conducting strip on the slab is considered. Two contrastive coupling phenomena, cavity-type and parasitic-type, observed in the geometry have been distinguished by differences in the resonant strip lengths and offset positions, induced strip current, radiation pattern, frequency bandwidth, and electromagnetic field distributions near the coupling slit.
