  • In the present study, actuators with diaphragms of different thickness and chambers of different diameter are fabricated to examine experimentally how the behavior characteristics of the actuator diaphragm in a thermopneumatic micropump are affected by diaphragm thickness and chamber diameter under various operating conditions with different values of input voltage and frequency. The actuator comprises a microheater set on Pyrex glass, a chamber, and a diaphragm. For all values of the input energy, as the frequency decreases below 10 Hz, the maximum center deflection of the diaphragm greatly increases irrespective of diaphragm thickness and chamber diameter. At low frequencies, as the heat energy supplied to the chamber increases, the center of deflection of the diaphragm increases; the magnitude of deflection is high for thin diaphragms and for diaphragms whose chambers have small diameters. At frequencies higher than 10 Hz, all the design variables such as diaphragm thickness, chamber diameter, and the input energy have negligible effect on the center deflection of the diaphragm.

  • Experimental studies have been done to examine the aging characteristics by regulator diaphragms of gas pressure, governor room of city gas. Various testing samples with different service periods were manufactured. The results of SEM observation indicated that the surface and thickness of the samples tested were slightly sensitive to the service periods. It was found that as the service periods increased, the tensile strength of diaphragm samples decreased. For samples over 25 years of service, the strength decreased to approximately 60 % of that of new diaphragms. It was also found that as the service periods increased, the elongation increased.

  • This paper proposes a novel method for increasing the distortional frame rigidity of off-rail box girder bridges for cranes by reinforcing the diaphragm with staggered truss. The study starts by using the Matrix Displacement Method to determine the shear angle of the staggered truss diaphragm under two assumptions: hinge joint and rigid joint. To obtain closed-form solutions for the transversal and longitudinal deformations and warping stress of the crane girder, the study employs the Initial Parameter Method and considers the compatibility of shear deformation at joints between the diaphragms and the girder. The theoretical solutions are validated through finite element analysis, which also confirms that the hinge-joint assumption accurately represents the shear angle of the staggered truss diaphragm in girder distortion. Additionally, the study conducts extensive parameter analyses to examine the impact of staggered truss dimensions on distortional stress and deformation. Furthermore, the study compares the distortional warping stresses of crane girders reinforced with staggered truss diaphragms and those reinforced with perforated ones, emphasizing the importance of incorporating stagger truss in diaphragms. Overall, this paper provides a thorough evaluation of the proposed approach's effectiveness in enhancing the distortional frame rigidity of off-rail box girder bridges for cranes. The findings offer valuable insights into the design and reinforcement of diaphragms using staggered truss to enhance the structural performance of crane girders.

  • The application of Giemsa technique to stain compressed diaphragm samples obtained from rodents experimentally infected with Trichinella spiralis is described. Diaphragm samples from rats heavily infected with 20 muscle larvae per gram of body weight(20 ML/gbw) were cut into several pieces and stained with Giemsa; on the other hand, whole diaphragms from slightly infected mice(1 ML/gbw) were also stained with Giemsa. Besides, muscle samples were also stained with Giemsa. Observation at 10 $\times$ magnification revealed that both ML and nurse cells(NC) look as bluish structures clearly contrasting with the pinkish color of the non-infected muscle fibers. NC in the diaphragms of mice could be easily observed at naked eye as blue points contrasting with the pink surrounding areas formed by the non-infected muscle fibers. Among NC observed in the diaphragms of rats infected with 20 ML/gbw, 4.4% was multiple infection. These findings were confirmed in sectioned and hematoxylin-eosin stained specimens. This data could be usefulness for a rapid diagnosis of trichinellosis in post-mortem mammals without magnification procedures.

  • Micro-speaker diaphragms play an important role in generating a desired audio response. The diaphragm is generally a circular membrane, and the cross section is a double dome, with an inner dome and an outer dome. To improve the sound quality of the speaker, a number of corrugations may be included in the outer dome region. In this study, the role of these corrugations is investigated using two kinds of finite element method (FEM) calculations. Structural FEM modeling was carried out to investigate the change in stiffness of the diaphragm when the corrugations were included. Modal FEM modeling was then carried out to compare the natural frequencies and the resulting vibrational modes of the plain and corrugated diaphragms. The effects of the corrugations on the vibration characteristics of the diaphragm are discussed.

  • Using a fiber laser heat source, an oil pressure sensor was fabricated to measure the pressure in commercial vehicles. A stepping motor was used for the rotational and translational motion in the diaphragms and hardware joining. Laser welding process algorism including shielding gas control and vision system was integrated by using LabVIEW software for the high quality welding and in-line monitoring purpose. For the maximum flexibility in pressure transmission to the pressure sensor, thin sheet metal diaphragm, $25{\sim}50{\mu}m$(SUS-316L), was used and the diaphragms were optimally designed with FEM analysis. The welded samples were cross-sectioned the observation showed that the maximum depth ratio was more than seven times of diaphragms. The maximum welding speed was measured to be as high as 50in/mm by the developed automation mechanism. The fabricated prototypes were tested for the proof pressure, spring constant and sealing. The FEM results of spring constant measurement was as accurate as up to 80% of the design value and the sensor was safely operated up to the nominal pressure of 10bars.

  • There is a complex variation of stress in PSC anchorage zones and box girder diaphragms because of large concentrated load by prestress. According to the AASHTO LFRD design code, three-dimensional effects due to concentrated jacking loads shall be investigated using three-dimensional analysis procedures or may be approximated by considering separate submodels for two or more planes. In this case, the interaction of the submodels should be considered, and the model loads and results should be consistent. However, box girder diaphragms are 3-dimensional disturbed region which requires a fully three-dimensional model, and two-dimensional models are not satisfactory to model the flow of forces in diaphragms. In this study, the strengths of the prestressed box girder diaphragms are predicted using the 3-dimensional grid strut-tie model approach, which were tested to failure in University of Texas. According to the analysis results, the 3-dimensional strut-tie model approach can be possibly applied to the analysis and design of PSC box girder anchorage zones as a reasonable computer-aided approach with satisfied accuracy.

  • In this research, fiber-optic pressure sensors were fabricated with rugate-structured porous silicon (RPS) diaphragms coated with PMMA (Polymethyl-Methacrylate). The reflectance spectrum of the PMMA/RPS diaphragm was almost the same as that of uncoated RPS diaphragm. However the mechanical strength of the PMMA/RPS diaphragm increased more than that of the uncoated diaphragm. As a result, the fiber-optic sensor fabricated with PMMA/RPS diaphragm could successfully detect more high pressure difference without diaphragm damage than the highest detectable pressure difference of the sensor with normal RPS diaphragm. The response data of the fiber-optic sensor recorded as a function of pressure difference were fitted by theoretical curves. During this process, elastic moduli of the used PMMA/RPS diaphragms were obtained numerically. The dynamic response properties of the fiber-optic sensor were also investigated under continuous variation of the pressure difference conditions.

  • Generally, diaphragms are installed in the box girder to prevent or decrease the distortion of the cross section. In engineering practice, diaphragms are spaced in 5m intervals without reasonable basis. the usual diaphragm type is solid-plate type. It is considered to be noneconomical design to the almost design engineers. In this paper, the parametric study was performed to present the design proposal about the diaphragm stiffness and spacing only in the single cell box girder. For that, the distortional warping normal stress, bending normal stress and transverse bending normal stress were analyzed using finite element program 'SMB' for the accurate structural analysis.

  • It is well known that l-girders are weak in torsion and it might be more economical to use a box girder, which has great torsional rigidity. The use of box beams does, however, present a potential problem in that cross-sectional distortions can induce large warping normal stresses and transverse bending stress. Accordingly a sufficient number of diaphragms are provided to make the distortional effects minimal. In engineering practice, diaphragms are spaced in 5m intervals without reasonable basis. It is considered to be noneconomical design to the almost design engineers, and it may produce the unsafe structural systems in special cases such as curved bridges with large initial curvature. These problems have not been solved for the lack of adequate tools of structural analysis. In this study, on the basis of the parametric studies, the design formulas for the distortional warping stress and the reasonable diaphragm spacing of box girder were presented.
