  • Diamoncl/Mo/Ni multi-layers on SKH-51 steel substrate was prepared to improve the abrasive wear resistance of a tool and die by a commercial chemical vapor deposition unit and electro-plating. The diamond after 7 hour deposition had cuba-octahedral structure with 2~5$\mu\textrm{m}$ grains. The existence of non-ferrous metals such as chromium, nickel and molybdenum between diamond and SKH-51 substrate results in forming higher quality of diamond layer by retarding carbon diffusion in the diamond layer during deposition, and also improving hardness and wear resistance. Surface cracks on the film was sometimes observed by the difference of by the thermal expansion coefficients between the steel substrate and the deposited layers during cooling.

  • In the present paper, a new type of DC arc plasma torch is disclosed. The principles of the new magnetic and fluid dynamic controlled large orifice long discharge tunnel plasma torch is discussed. Two series of DC Plasma Jet diamond film deposition equipment have been developed. The 20kW Jet equipped with a $\Phi$70 mm orifice torch is capable of deposition diamond films at a growth rate as high as 40$\mu\textrm{m}$/h over a substrate area of $\Phi$65 mm. The 100kW high power Jet which is newly developed based on the experience of the low power model is equipped with a $\Phi$120 mm orifice torch, and is capable of depositing diamond films over a substrate area of $\Phi$110 mm at growth rate as high as 40 $\mu\textrm{m}$/h, and can be operated at gas recycling mode, which allows 95% of the gases be recycled. It is demonstrated that the new type DC plasma torch can be easily scaled up to even higher power Jet. It is estimated that even by the 100kW Jet, the cost for tool grade diamond films can be as low as less than $4/carat.

  • The diamond thin films was deposited on Si(100) substrate by Hot Filament Chemical Vapor Deposition (HFCVD) method using supplied the $CH_{3}OH/H_{2}O$ mixtured gas with excess H_{2} gas. The role of hydrogen ion as the growth mechanism of the diamond deposit was examined and compared the $CH_{3}OH/H_{2}O$ with the $CH_4/H_2$. Pressures in the range of $1.1\sim290{\times}10^2$ Pa were applied and using $3.4\sim4.4$ kw power. It was investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM) and Raman spectroscopy The H ion was etching the graphite and restrained from $sp^3\;to\;sp^2$. But excess $H_2$ gas was not helped diamond deposit using $CH_{3}OH/H_{2}O$ mixtured gas. It was shown that the role of hydrogen ion of deposited diamond films using $CH_{3}OH/H_{2}O$ was different from $CH_4/H_2$.

  • In this research, DLC thin films are produced as several hundred nm thickness by PE-CVD method. And then these thin films are estimated tribological characteristics to find out useful possibilities as a protecting film for high-quality function and life extension at MEMs by mechanical properties observation . These are measured thickness and residual stress of DLC coating. Compared after measuring friction coefficient, adhesion force, hardness, cohesive force of coating films. As results all test, we can decide several conclusions. First, friction coefficient decreased, as the load increased. otherwise, friction coefficient increased, as thickness of coating film increased under low load$(1\~50mN)$. Secod, adhesion force increased as thickness of coating films. Third, hardness of coating film is affected by substrate coating film when it is less than thickness of 300nm and it has general hardness of DLC coating film when it is more than thickness of 500nm. Fourth, cohesive force of coating film is complexly affected by hardness, adhesion force, residual stress, etc.

  • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities using the new alignment material of a Carbon Nitride (NDLC) thin film. NDLC thin film exhibits high electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity that are similar to the properties shown by diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin films. The diamond-like properties and nondiamond-like bonding make NDLC an attractive candidate for applications. A high pretilt angle of about $9.9^{\circ}$ by ion beam (IB) exposure on the NDLC thin film surface was measured. A good LC alignment is achieved by the IB alignment method on the NDLC thin film surface at annealing temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. The alignment defect of the NLC was observed above annealing temperature of $250^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the high pretilt angle and the good LC alignment by the IB alignment method on the NDLC thin film surface can be achieved.

  • The methastable state diamond films have been deposited on Si substrates using MWPCVD. Effects of each experimental parameters of MWPCVD including $CH_4$ conentrations, Oxygen additions, Operating pressure, etc. on the growth rate and crystallinity were invesitigated. The best crystallinity of the film at 3% methane concentration addition of oxygen to the $CH_4-H_2O$ mixture gave an improved film crystallinity at 50% oxygen concentration. Upon increasing the operating pressure, the growth rate and crystallinity were increased simultaneously.

  • Electrochemical method have been employed in this work to modify the chemical vapour deposited nitrogen doped hydrogen amorphous diamond-like carbon (N-DLC) film to fabricate nickel and copper nano particle modified N-DLC electrodes. The electrochemical behaviour of the metal nano particle modified N-DLC electrodes have been characterized at the presence of glucose in electrolyte. Meanwhile, the N-DLC film structure and the morphology of metal nano particles on the N-DLC surface have been investigated using micro-Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. The nickel nano particle modified N-DLC electrode exhibits a high catalytic activity and low background current, while the advantage of copper modified N-DLC electrode is drawn back by copper oxidizations at anodic potentials. The results show that metal nano particle modification of N-DLC surface could be a promising method for controlling the electrochemical properties of N-DLC electrodes.

  • A new paradigm of crystal growth was suggested in a charged cluster model, where charged clusters of nanometer size are suspended in the gas phase in most thin film processes and are a major flux for thin film growth. The existence of these hypothetical clusters was experimentally confirmed in the diamond and silicon CVD processes as well as in gold and tungsten evaporation. These results imply new insights as to the low pressure diamond synthesis without hydrogen, epitaxial growth, selective deposition and fabrication of quantum dots, nanometer-sized powders and nanowires or nanotubes. Based on this concept, we produced such quantum dot structures of carbon, silicon, gold and tungsten. Charged clusters land preferably on conducting substrates over on insulating substrates, resulting in selective deposition. if the behavior of selective deposition is properly controlled, charged clusters can make highly anisotropic growth, leading to nanowires or nanotubes.

  • We deposited diamond-like carbon (DLC) films using ion beam sputtering of a graphite target on flat substrates for use as a thin film field emitter. An n-type silicon wafer, titanium-coated silicon, and indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass were used as a substrate. All films exhibited a sudden increase in the emission after a breakdown occurred at high voltage. The morphology of the films after the breakdown depended on the substrate. On ITO and Ti substrates, the DLC film peeled off upon breakdown, but on the Si substrate the surface melting due to breakdown resulted in the formation of various structures such as a sharp point, mound, and crater. By scanning the deformed surface with a tip anode, we found that the emission was concentrated at the deformed sites, indicating that the field enhancement due to the morphology change was responsible for the increased emission.

  • DLC (diamond liked carbon) coating of the tungsten carbide (WC) alloy core surface for molding a glass aspheric lens improves the quality of glass lens and the molding core and is characterized by high hardness, high elasticity, abrasion resistance and chemical stability. In this study, the effect of DLC coating of a thin film by means of the filtered AIP (arc ion plating) technique was examined on Ra and shape of the coated surface. Roughness before and after DLC coating was measured and the result showed that the roughness was improved after coating as compared to before coating. It was observed that DLC coating of the WC alloy core surface for molding had an effect on improving the roughness and shape of the core surface. It is considered that this will have an effect on improving abrasion resistance and the service life of the core surface.
