A STUDY OF THE SUTURAL FACIAL BONE GROWTH OF RABBIT : SERIAL ROENTGENOGRAPHIC STUDY BY MEANS OF MEANS OF IMPLANTS (금속매식법(金屬埋植法)에 의(依)한 가토(家兎)의 봉합성(縫合性) 안면골성장(顔面骨成長)에 관(關)한 X-선학적(線學的) 연구(硏究))

  • The present study has the purpose of investigating various growth and developmental aspects of rabbit snout with the aid of metallic implantation and of improving on the indirect method of growth and developmental studies of its skull. Sixty-eight growing albino rabbits were used. A head holder, film holder, cephalometer, metallic implanting device and implant materials were designed and constructed by the author. Eight metallic pins were implanted with a metallic implanting device in the rabbit snout under general anesthesia. Two metallic pins were implanted on each side of the interfrontal suture and another two were put on each side of the internasal suture near the frontonasal suture. Serial cephalograms were taken with a two-week interval, using the head holder, film holder and cephalometer. Eight items of linear measurement were obtained from the film. On the base of the results of the study, the following conclusions are obtained: 1. The metallic implant method is better than the other indirect methods for growth and developmental studies of the rabbit skull. 2. Most of the vertical growth of the rabbit snout is due to sutural growth at the frontonasal suture and the horizontal growth is at the interfrontal and the internasal suture. 3. The vertical growth of the rabbit snout is greater than the horizontal growth. 4. The horizontal growth of the rabbit snout is greater at the nasal bone than at the frontal bone. 5. The amount of vertical growth of the rabbit snout is almost same at inner and outer side of the interfrontal and internasal suture line, 6. Growth rate of the sutural growth of the rabbit snout tends to decrease by the growth of the rabbit. 7. Implant materials do not disturb growth and development of the rabbit snout, except a slight trauma effect during the first week of metallic implantation.

Does Vietnam Follow the East Asian Developmental State?: A Study of the Developmental Model in the 30 Year Reform Process (베트남은 동아시아 발전국가를 따르는가?: 30년 개혁과정의 '발전 모델' 고찰)

  • Vietnam has proceeded the gradual reform without radical political change since launching the 'Doi Moi', the comprehensive reform policy adopted in late 1986. Vietnam has been evaluated as a country to perform the economic growth for 30 years successfully, although there were economic recessions for a short time. Through looking at the process of reform, while the state economic sector and foreign-invested sector have contributed to the economic growth in the initial stage of reform, the domestic private sector and foreign-invested sector's economic roles have increased and the state sector's role has been decreased, as the reform has been proceeded. As the state's developmental role has been revealed prominently in the reform process and state's involvement into economic affairs in Vietnam, it is reasonable, in part, to categorize Vietnam as a developmental state like East Asian developmental states. However this evaluation is tentative, as it seems that Vietnamese state's industrial policies have contributed economic growth partly and remarkable economic growth has been shown in the sectors that the government has not focused. In conclusion, Vietnam has changed into a mixed country which has the characteristics of East Asian developmental state formally and the features of Southeast Asian countries which have focused more on the foreign-invested developmental strategy.

Factors Influencing Developmental Care Performance among Neonatal Intensive Care Units Nurses (신생아집중치료실 간호사의 발달지지간호 수행 영향요인)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify factors related to developmental care performance among neonatal intensive care units (NICU) nurses. Methods: The participants were 139 nurses who had provided care to premature infants for more than 6 months and were recruited from the NICU of 8 hospitals. Data were collected from September 1 to December 1, 2017 through questionnaires that encompassed developmental care performance, developmental care perceptions, and the nursing work environment. Results: More than half (51.8%) of the participants responded that they had never received developmental care education, and for 89.6% of those who had received developmental care education, it was a one-time event. The average developmental care performance of NICU nurses was 0.81, with a range of 0.5~1 point. Multiple regression analysis, demonstrated that the nursing work environment (β=.27, p=.001) and developmental care perceptions (β=.23, p=.004) influenced developmental care performance, with a total explanatory power of 14%. Conclusion: Based on these results, developmental care education for the NICU nurses must be provided systematically. In addition, strategies to improve nurses' perceptions of developmental care and to provide appropriate support for the nursing work environment can promote developmental care performance.

  • This concerns the summary report of a series of studies on Metastrongylosis hitherto published by the writer. The life cycle of swine lungworm was first elucidated by Hobmaier in 1929. Since then subsequent studies conducted by many workers have revealed that some species of earthworms act as specific intermediate hosts of swine lungworm. The writer observed that three species of earthworms, Helodrilus foetidus, Allolobophora caliginosa and Pheretima, serve as intermediate hosts of swine lungworm in Korea. The present summary consists of the results of survey on the distribution of infectious lungworm larvae and the studies on the developmental growth of lungworm larvae in the intermediate and terminal hosts.

  • The purposes of this study were to identify the relationship between parent and child with chronic illness and developmental disability, and to review the strategy for improvement of their relationship. The effects of chronic illness and developmental disability is that the child has delayed growth and development, and his(her) parent has sadness, guilty feeling, anxiety, grief, disappointment, low self-esteem, anger and resentment. Chronic illness and developmental disability also have a negative effect to the parental marital relationship. The reaction of parent and child varies in age of onset, a developmental transition period, crisis and parent-child relationship. Through this study, I propose that parent-child relationship could be improved by touch, communication between them and education for parents.

  • Early detection and intervention is critical in improving prognosis of developmental disorders. Developmental delay can have many different causes and the clinical features of developmental delay are diverse according to its etiologic causes and severity. The vast and rapid growth of the child's neurobehavioral repertoire from birth through adolescence requires the physician's abundant experience, knowledge, and understanding of development. Here, we summarize instruments for use in neurodevelopmental assessment of infants and toddlers, focusing on motor development, which is the most frequent complaint listed in the developmental clinic.

NFI-C Is Required for Epiphyseal Chondrocyte Proliferation during Postnatal Cartilage Development

  • Stringent regulation of the chondrocyte cell cycle is required for endochondral bone formation. During the longitudinal growth of long bones, mesenchymal stem cells condense and differentiate into chondrocytes. Epiphyseal chondrocytes sequentially differentiate to form growth-plate cartilage, which is subsequently replaced with bone. Although the importance of nuclear factor 1C (Nfic) in hard tissue formation has been extensively studied, knowledge regarding its biological roles and molecular mechanisms in this process remains insufficient. Herein, we demonstrated that Nfic deficiency affects femoral growth-plate formation. Chondrocyte proliferation was downregulated and the number of apoptotic cell was increased in the growth plates of Nfic-/- mice. Further, the expression of the cell cycle inhibitor p21 was upregulated in the primary chondrocytes of Nfic-/- mice, whereas that of cyclin D1 was downregulated. Our findings suggest that Nfic may contribute to postnatal chondrocyte proliferation by inhibiting p21 expression and by increasing the stability of cyclin D1 protein.

MORPHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF DEVELOPMENTAL CHANGES IN SOMA AREA OF DIGASTRIC MOTONEURONS IN THE RAT TRIGEMINAL MOTOR NUCLEI (흰쥐의 두힘살근 운동신경세포의 발달과정에 관한 형태학적 분석)

  • To analyze the developmental changes in soma diameters of digastric motoneurons, wheat-germ agglutinin conjugated horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) was injected into the digastric muscle and visualized the retrogradely HRP-labeled motoneurons through tungstate/tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and following diaminobenzidine (DAB) reactions. The results obtained from Sprague-Dawley rats at postnatal days 1 (P1), 10 (P10) and 30 (P30) indicated as follows: firstly, soma diameters of digastric motoneurons showed unimodal distribution in all postnatal days examined; secondly, the period of P1 to P10 (period 1) showed about 2 times faster growth rate than that of P10 to P30 (period 2); thirdly, the smallest soma examined in each postnatal day exhibited slower growth rate with that of the largest one (increase ratio in soma diameters from P1 to P30, smallest vs. largest = 1.62 : 1.93); Finally, relative growth rates a day showed again that period 1 had faster growth rate than that of period 2. Consequently, developmental changes in soma diameters of digastric motoneurons resulted in very different growth rates between both periods. This implies that the growth of the soma is almost completing within P10 and thereafter growing slowly. The period 1 and 2 are corresponding to sucking and sucking/masticatory period, respectively. Therefore present study providing morphological changes in soma diameters of digastric motoneurons suggests that both periods and their different growth rates of the motoneurons in each period may closely be related with each other.
