  • Hispidin is a secondary metabolite found in numerous medicinal mushrooms that has attracted significant attention, owing to its distinct biological effects, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and cytoprotective properties. Experiments are being carried out to study the interaction of detonation nanodiamonds (DNDs) with synthetic and natural hispidin sourced from extracts of Pholiota sp. fungus. The bioluminescence method is used to determine the adsorption/desorption properties of DNDs toward hispidin. It is found that hispidin forms strong conjugates with DNDs, and the use of various eluents does not result in a significant release of the adsorbed hispidin molecules. DND-bovine serum albumin (BSA) complex, where DNDs serve as a carrier for the protein and the latter acts as a hispidin sorbent, has been developed and applied in hispidin adsorption/desorption tests. The results support the use of the DNDs as a carrier for hispidin in medical applications. They also advocate the application of the DND-BSA complex for isolating the substance from fungal extracts.

  • Three-dimensional structures of detonation wave propagating in circular tube were investigated. Inviscid fluid dynamics equations coupled with a conservation equation of reaction progress variable were analyzed by a MUSCL-type TVD scheme and four stage Runge-Kutta time integration. Variable-$\gamma$ formulation was used to account for the variable properties between unburned and burned states and the chemical reaction was modeled by using a simplified one-step irreversible kinetics model. The computational code was parallelized based on domain decomposition technique using MPI-II message passing library. The computations were carried out using a home made Windows based PC cluster having 160 AMD AthloxXP and Athlon64 processor. The computational domain consisted of through a roundshaped tube with wall conditions. As an initial condition, analytical ZND solution was distributed over the computational domain with disturbances. The disturbances has circumferential large gradient. The unsteady computational results in three-dimension show the detailed mechanisms of multi-cell mode of detonation wave instabilities resulting diamond shape in smoked-foil record.

  • This paper deals with the modeling and simulation of the internal flowfield in a valveless airbreathing pulse detonation engine (PDE) currently under experimental development at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. The system involves no valves in the airflow path, and the isolation between the inlet and combustor is achieved through the gasdynamics in an isolator. The analysis accommodates the full conservation equations in axisymmetric coordinates, and takes into account variable properties for ethylene/oxygen/air system. Chemical reaction schemes with a single progress variable are implemented to minimize the computational burden. Detailed flow evolution during a full cycle is explored and propulsive performance is calculated. Effect of initiator mass injection rate is examined and results indicate that the mass injection rate should be carefully selected to avoid the formation of recirculation zones in the initial cold flowfield. Flow evolution results demonstrate a successful detonation transmission from the initiator to the combustor. However, strong pressure disturbance may propagate upstream to the inlet nozzle, suggesting the current configuration could be further refined to provide more efficient isolation between the inlet and combustor.

  • The propagation mechanism of a detonation pressure with fully coupled charge is clarified and the blasting pressure propagated in rock mass is derived from the application of shock wave theory. Probabilistic distribution is obtained by using explosion tests on emulsion and rock property tests on granite in Seoul and then the probabilistic distribution of the blasting pressure is derived from their properties. The probabilistic distributions of explosive properties and rock properties show a normal distribution so that the blasting pressure propagated in rock can be also regarded as a normal distribution. Parametric analysis was performed to pinpoint the most influential parameter that affects the blasting pressure and it was found that the detonation velocity is the most sensitive parameter. Moreover, uncertainty analysis was performed to figure out the effect of each parameter uncertainty on the uncertainty of blasting pressure. Its result showed that uncertainty of natural rock properties constitutes the main portion of blasting pressure uncertainty rather than that of explosive properties.

  • The theoretical investigation has been performed to predict detonation velocity, detonation pressure, and thermodynamic stability of HMX/LLM-116 cocrystal. All possible geometries of HMX, LLM-116, and cocrystal have been optimized at the B3LYP/cc-pVTZ level of theory. The binding energy for the trigger bond and cluster has been calculated to predict the thermodynamic stability. The MP2 binding energies were obtained using single point energy calculation at the B3LYP optimized geometries, and the density has been calculated from monte carlo integration. The detonation velocity and detonation pressure have been calculated using Kamlet-Jacobs equation, while enthalpy has been predicted at the CBS-Q level of theory.

  • Optimum additive which gets Possible detonation sensitivity and minimum stability has been selected among several additives. It is able to mitigate a chemical reaction without destroying a structure of emulsion. Kinecker has been developed by mixing both matrix and selected additive through a perfect formulation. The detonation pressure is reduced by 40.66%(47.27% by Nitro Dyne's program), and hole pressure by 33.25% and even VOD by 52.88% against currently used emulsion explosives.

  • Most commercially available detonation nanodiamonds (DNDs) require further processing to qualify for use in biomedical applications, as they often contain many impurities and exhibit poor dispersibility in aqueous media. In this work, DNDs are modified to improve purity and impart a high colloidal stability to the particles. The dispersive and adsorption properties of modified DNDs are evaluated in terms of the suitability of DNDs as carriers for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in transdermal delivery. The study of adsorption on strongly positively and strongly negatively charged DNDs showed their high loading capacity for NSAIDs, and a pronounced relationship between the drugs and the particles' charges. Experiments on long-term desorption carried out with DND/NSAID complexes indicate that the nanoparticles exert a sustained effect on the drug release process.

  • Huge amount of energy produced by an underground nuclear test is released into the surrounding rock. Depending on the properties of the bed rock surrounding the detonation and overlaying it a variety of effects can occur. At some particular depth the increasing amount of material thrown upward is exactly balanced by the decreasing fraction escaping the crater, the crater volume reaches to a maximum. This depth is called the optimum depth of burial and varies somewhat with the geology of the site, being greater for less dense and structurally weaker material.

  • Plastic bonded explosive(PBX) is mainly composed of the nitramine-ploymer compositions. PBX is characterized by high velocity and pressure of detonation, low vulnerability and good thermal stability. Many important applications of PBX require the good adhesion between nitramine crystals and the binder. For PBXs as well as propellants, where good mechanical properties are of great importance, dewetting therefore must be prevented by strong adhesion between filler-binder. Adhesion depends on surface characteristics of filler and binder. In order to design for better adhesion, an understanding of the surface properties of explosive and binder is required. The surface free energies are calculated from contact angle values by the method of Kaelble. Critical surface tension of solids are calculated by Zisman plot. Critical surface tension is a useful parameter for characterizing the wettability of solid surface. In this study, HMX and 3 kinds of copolymers are selected, since they are widely used in many plastic bonded explosives. The technical objective of this investigation is to predict the interaction between filler and binder from their surface free energies.
