  • Spectral modeling synthesis (SMS) has been used as a powerful tool for musical sound modeling. This technique considers a sound as a combination of a deterministic plus a stochastic component. The deterministic component is represented by the series of sinusoids that are described by amplitude, frequency, and phase functions and the stochastic component is represented by a series of magnitude spectrum envelopes that functions as a time varying filter excited by white noise. These representations make it possible for a synthesized sound to attain all the perceptual characteristics of the original sound. However, sometimes considerable phase variations occur in the deterministic component by using the conventional SMS for the complex sound such as whale sounds when the partial frequencies in successive frames differ. This is because it utilizes the calculated phase to synthesize deterministic component of the sound. As a result, it does not provide a good spectrum matching between original and synthesized spectrum in higher frequency region. To overcome this problem, we propose a modified SMS that provides good spectrum matching of original and synthesized sound by calculating complex residual spectrum in frequency domain and utilizing original phase information to synthesize the deterministic component of the sound. Analysis and simulation results for synthesizing whale sounds suggest that the proposed method is comparable to the conventional SMS in both time and frequency domain. However, the proposed method outperforms the SMS in better spectrum matching.

  • Liquefaction of soil foundation is one of the major seismic damage types for infrastructures. In this paper, deterministic and probabilistic approaches for the evaluation of liquefaction potential are briefly summarized and the risk assessment method is newly proposed using seismic fragility and seismic hazard analyses. Currently the deterministic approach is widely used to evaluate the liquefaction potential in Korea. However, it is very difficult to handle a certain degree of uncertainties in the soil properties such as elastic modulus and resistant capacity by deterministic approach, and the probabilistic approaches are known as more promising. Two types of probabilistic approaches are introduced including (1) the reliability analysis (to obtain probability of failure) for a given design earthquake and (2) the seismic risk analysis of liquefaction for a specific soil for a given service life. The results from different methods show a similar trend, and the liquefaction potential can be more quantitatively evaluated using the new risk analysis method.

  • For the purpose of developing the method for efficiently calculating the design sensitivity and the reliability for the complicated structure such as ship structure, the probabilistic finite element method is introduced to formulate the deterministic design sensitivity analysis method and incorporated with the second moment reliability methods such as MVFOSM, AFOSM and SORM. Also, the probabilistic design sensitivity analysis needed in the reliability-based design is performed. The reliability analysis is carried out for the initial yielding failure, in which the derivative derived in the deterministic desin sensitivity is used. The present PFEM-based reliability method shows good agreement with Monte Carlo method in terms with the variance of response and the associated probability of failure even at the first or first few iteration steps. The probabilistic design sensitivity analysis evaluates explicitly the contribution of each random variable to probability of failure. Further, the reliability index variation can be easily predicted by the variation of the mean and the variance of the random variables.

  • The criteria for determining the elements are the minimum zone method(MZM) and the least squares method(LSM). The LSM is deterministic and simple but is limited at the measurements whose errors are significant compared with form errors. For the precise condition, minimum zone method(MZM) has been selected to determine the elements. It is not deterministic and nonlinear so that a optimizing procedure is needed. The Straightness is the fundamental problem in the evaluating form error. In this paper, a new approach adapting the genius education concept is proposed to obtain an accurate results for the minimum zone problem of the straightness. Its computational algorithm is studied on a set of randomly generated data. To be of almost no account of the specification(the number and the standard devistion etc.) of the sample data, the results shows excellent reliability and high accuracy in estimating the straightness.

  • Polarity correlation is a simplified version of the usual, having a possibility of real-time processing without any reduction of precision. In this paper, its applicability in deterministic signals is first explored generally, by theoretical or numerical analysis of four kinds of the typical signals. Then, based on the results, its two applications are proposed, that are detection and demodulation of FSK signals in digital communication, and time delay estimasion in ultrasonic A-mode measurement. The effectiveness of the proposed applications is confirmed by its superior implementation ability and the results of numerical experiments under practical circumstances.

  • We propose a deterministic vector channel simulation model satisfying not only rigorous temporal correlation but also arbitrary spatial correlation using the method of Doppler phase difference sampling. The model is more efficient than the conventional PN filtered Gaussian model with coloring process in evaluating the laboratory performance of mobile communication systems employing adaptive way antennas or space diversity.

  • The paper describes the validation of two time domain methods to simulate the behaviour of a destroyer operating in steep, stern-quartering seas. The significance of deck-edge immersion and water on deck on the capsize risk is shown as well as the necessity to account for the wave disturbances caused by the ship. A method is described to reconstruct experimental wave trains and finally two deterministic validation cases are shown.

  • Bayesian MAP-EM approaches have been quite useful or tomographic reconstruction in that they can stabilize the instability of well-known ML-EM approaches, and can incorporate a priori information on the underlying emission object. However, MAP reconstruction algorithms with expressive priors often suffer from the optimization problem when their objective unctions are nonquadratic. In our previous work [1], we showed that the use of deterministic annealing method greatly reduces computational burden or optimization and provides a good solution or nonquadratic objective unctions. Here, we further investigate the convergence of the deterministic annealing algorithm; our experimental results show that, while the solutions obtained by a simple quenching algorithm depend on the initial conditions, the estimates converged via deterministic annealing algorithm are consistent under various initial conditions.

  • A dynamic relocation algorithm for non-deterministic process graph in distributed computer systems is proposed. A method is represented for determining the optimal policy for processing a process tree. A general database query request is modelled by a process tree which represent a set of subprocesses together with their precedence relationship. The process allocation model is based on operating cost which is a function fo selection of site for processing operation, data reduction function and file size. By using expected values of parameters for non-deterministic process tree, the process graph and optimal policy that yield minimum operating cost are determined. As process is relocated according to threshold value and new information of parameters after the execution of low level process for non-deterministic process graph, the assigned state that approximate to optiaml solution is obtained. The proposed algorihtm is heuristic By performing algorithm for sample problems, it is shown that the proposed algorithm is good in obtaining optimal solution.

  • In this study, the algorithm for detection of evoked potentials is proposed. The observed evoked potentials are first preprocessed by blind identification so as to eliminate the ongoing EEG Bile noise. Then, statistic characteristics of the peak components i.e latency and amplitude are detected from prefiltered responses by latency-corrected averaging method. The performance of blind identification is compared with those of adaptive fillers as to deterministic and stochastic EPs, is assessed in terms of NMSE, distortion index, correlation coefficient with original EPs. The estimated deterministic and stochastic EPs restored with peak components are compared and assessed. The results show the superiority of this proposed algorithm using blind identification in detecting deterministic and stochastic EPs.
