Remotely sensed data have been utilized efficiently for damage detection immediately after the natural disaster since they provide valuable information on land cover change due to spatial synchronization and multitemporal observation over large areas. Damage information obtained at an early stage is important for rapid emergency response and recovery works. Many useful techniques to analyze the characteristics of the pre- and post-event satellite images in large-scale damage detection have been successfully investigated for emergency management. Since high-resolution satellite images provide a wealth of information on damage occurred in urban areas, they are successfully utilized for damage detection in urban areas. In this research, a method to perform automated damage detection is proposed based on the differences of the textural characteristics in pre- and post- high resolution satellite images.

In this paper, we present a low-cost fire detection system using a thermal camera and a smartphone. The developed system collects thermal and RGB videos from the developed camera. To detect fire, candidate fire regions are extracted from videos obtained using a thermal camera. The block mean of variation of adjacent frames is measured to analyze the dynamic characteristics of the candidate fire regions. After analyzing the dynamic characteristics of regions of interest, a fire is determined by the candidate fire regions. In order to evaluate the performance of our system, we compared with a smoke detector, a heat detector, and a flame detector. In the experiments, our fire detection system showed the excellent performance in detecting fire with an overall accuracy rate of 97.8 %.
With the increasing application of explosive composite structure in many engineering fields, its interface bonding state detection is more and more significant to avoid catastrophic accidents. However, this task still faces challenges due to the complexity of the bonding interface. In this paper, the concept of nonlinear output frequency response functions (NOFRFs) is introduced to detect the bonding state of explosive composite structure. The NOFRFs can describe the nonlinear characteristics of nonlinear vibrating system. Because of the presence of the bonding interface, explosive composite structure itself is a nonlinear system; when bonding interface of the structure is damaged, its dynamic characteristics show enhanced nonlinear characteristic. Therefore, the NOFRFs-based detection index is proposed as indicator to detect the bonding state of explosive composite pipes. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of the detection approach.
Two supervised learning algorithms, a basic neural network and a long short-term memory recurrent neural network, are applied to traffic including DDoS attacks. The joint effects of preprocessing methods and hyperparameters for machine learning on performance are investigated. Values representing attack characteristics are extracted from datasets and preprocessed by two methods. Binary classification and two optimizers are used. Some hyperparameters are obtained exhaustively for fast and accurate detection, while others are fixed with constants to account for performance and data characteristics. An experiment is performed via TensorFlow on three traffic datasets. Three scenarios are considered to investigate the effects of learning former traffic on sequential traffic analysis and the effects of learning one dataset on application to another dataset, and determine whether the algorithms can be used for recent attack traffic. Experimental results show that the used preprocessing methods, neural network architectures and hyperparameters, and the optimizers are appropriate for DDoS attack detection. The obtained results provide a criterion for the detection accuracy of attacks.
Recently, many target detection algorithms were developed for hyperspectral image. However, almost of these studies focused only accuracy from 1 or 2 data sets to validate and compare the algorithms although they give limited information to users. This study aimed to compare usability of target detection algorithms with various parameters. Five parameters were proposed to compare sensitivity in aspect of detection accuracy which are related with radiometric and spectral characteristics of target, background and image. Six target detection algorithms were compared in aspect of accuracy and efficiency (processing time) by variation of the parameters and image size, respectively. The results shown different usability of each algorithm by each parameter in aspect of accuracy. Second order statistics based algorithms needed relatively long processing time. Integrated usabilities of accuracy and efficiency were various by characteristics of target, background and image. Consequently, users would consider appropriate target detection algorithms by characteristics of data and purpose of detection.

In general, the boundary portion of the background and objects are the rapidly changing point and an important elements to analyze characteristics of image. Using these boundary parts, information about the position or shape of an object in the image are detected, and many studies have been continued in order to detect it. Existing methods are that implementation of algorithm is comparatively simple and its processing speed is fast, but edge detection characteristics is insufficient because weighted values are applied to all the pixels equally. Therefore, in this paper, we proposed an algorithm using region segmentation of the mask in order to adaptive edge detection according to image, and the results processed by proposed algorithm indicated superior edge detection characteristics in edge area.

Through the low orbit GPS satellite for a 3-dimensional real time position detechtion can be achieved anywhere. Utilizing the GPS sate llite detection values an analysis of the varing characteristics of the ionosphere can be achieved, and by calculating the correlation relationship of the position detection error and the ionospheric time delay characteristics, an advanced algorithm technique can be developed. Computer simulation of the developed algorithm for defining the corelation between the position detection error and the varing ionospheric time delay charcteristics has been proceeded. The results of simulation reveal the fact that the varing characteristics of the ionosphere nearly match the actual ionospheric time delay characteristics.

Edge detection is the first step and very important step in image analysis. In this paper, proposed edge detection operators based on informations of edge types and it is different from other classical edge detection operators such as gradient and surface fitting operators. The first, we defined characteristics of edge types such as localization, thinness, length. The second, we defined valid edge types and ideal edge pixel positions in $3\times3$window based on edge characteristics of edge types. And we proposed edge detection algorithm and twelve windows based on valid edge types. In specially, proposed algorithm was shown better performence of edge detection than other operators such as gradient operator and the LoG(Laplacian of Gaussian) operator of zero crossings.

In network intrusion detection research, two characteristics are generally considered vital to building efficient intrusion detection systems (IDSs): an optimal feature selection technique and robust classification schemes. However, the emergence of sophisticated network attacks and the advent of big data concepts in intrusion detection domains require two more significant aspects to be addressed: employing an appropriate big data computing framework and utilizing a contemporary dataset to deal with ongoing advancements. As such, we present a comprehensive approach to building an efficient IDS with the aim of strengthening academic anomaly detection research in real-world operational environments. The proposed system has the following four characteristics: (i) it performs optimal feature selection using information gain and branch-and-bound algorithms; (ii) it employs machine learning techniques for classification, namely, Logistic Regression, Naïve Bayes, and Random Forest; (iii) it introduces bulk synchronous parallel processing to handle the computational requirements of large-scale networks; and (iv) it utilizes a real-time contemporary dataset generated by the Information Security Centre of Excellence at the University of Brunswick (ISCX-UNB) to validate its efficacy. Experimental analysis shows the effectiveness of the proposed framework, which is able to achieve high accuracy, low computational cost, and reduced false alarms.

The pulse amplitude of a search radar signal received by an ES system is not constant pulse by pulse because of the radar's scan characteristics. The variation of the pulse amplitude causes the ES detection loss in the ES system. Therefore, the ES detection range equation should consider the ES detection loss caused by the search radar's scan characteristics. In this paper, we theoretically analyze the ES detection loss for the circular scar and propose the model to evaluate it quantitatively. The experiment results for the real search radar signals demonstrate that the proposed model is suitable for the evaluation model of the ES detection loss related to the circular scan of radars.
