In this paper, an efficient core point detection method using orientation pattern labeling is proposed in fingerprint image. The core point, which is one of the singular points in fingerprint image, is used as the reference point in the most fingerprint recognizing system. Therefore, the detection of the core point is the most essential step of the fingerprint recognizing system, it can affect in the whole system performance. The proposed method could detect the position of the core point by applying the labeling method for the directional pattern which is come from the distribution of the ridges in fingerprint image and applying detailed algorithms for the decision of the core point's position. The simulation result of proposed method is better than the result of Poincare index method and the sine map method in executing time and detecting rate. Especially, the Poincare index method can't detect the core point in the detection of the arch type and the sine map method takes too much times for executing. But the proposed method can overcome these problems.
This study investigates the feasibility of detecting structural damage using the HHT method. A damage detection index, the ratio of bandwidth (RB) is proposed. This index is highly correlated or approximately equal to the change of equivalent damping ratio for an intact structure incurring damage from strong ground motions. Based on an analysis of shaking table test data from benchmark models subjected to adjusted Kobe and El Centro earthquakes, the damage detection index is evaluated using the Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) and the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) methods, respectively. Results indicate that, when the response of the structure is in the elastic region, the RB value only slightly changes in both the HHT and the FFT spectra. Additionally, RB values estimated from the HHT spectra vs. the PGA values change incrementally when the structure response is nonlinear i.e., member yielding occurs, but not in the RB curve from the FFT spectra. Moreover, the RB value of the top floor changes more than those from the other floors. Furthermore, structural damage is detected only when using the acceleration response data from the top floor. Therefore, the ratio of bandwidth RB estimated from the smoothed HHT spectra is an effective and sensitive damage index for detecting structural damage. Results of this study also demonstrate that the HHT is a powerful method in analyzing the nonlinear responses of steel structures to strong ground motions.
A main goal of this study is to propose a damage detection technique to detect and localize damages of a top-tensioned riser. In this paper, the top-tensioned finite element (FE) model is considered as an analytical model of the riser, and a vibration-based damage detection method is proposed. The present method consists of a FE model updating and damage index method. In order to accomplish the goal of this study, first, a sensitivity-based FE model updating method using natural frequencies and zero frequencies is introduced. Second, natural frequencies and zero frequencies of the axial mode on the top-tensioned riser are estimated by eigenvalue analysis. Finally, the locations and severities of the damages are estimated from the damage index method. Three numerical examples are considered to verify the performance of the proposed method.
Research on damage detection methods in structures began a few decades ago with the introduction of methods based on structural vibration frequencies, which, of course, continues to this day. The value of important structures, on the one hand, and the countless maintenance costs on the other hand, have led researchers to always try to identify more accurate methods to diagnose damage to structures in the early stages. Among these, one of the most important and widely used methods in damage detection is the use of time-frequency representations. By using time-frequency representations, it is possible to process signals simultaneously in the time and frequency domains. In this research, the Short-Time Fourier transform, a known time-frequency function, has been used to process signals and identify the system. Besides, a new damage index has been introduced to identify damages in concrete piers of bridges. The proposed method has relatively simple calculations. To evaluate the method, the finite element model of an existing concrete bridge was created using as-built details. Based on the results, the method identifies the damages with high accuracy.
Recently, people's desire for the waterfront space has been increasing, and more people want to spend their leisure time close to the water. This paper proposes a damage detection technique using the static strain for the floating structure. An existing damage index, in which the modal strain energy was utilized to identify possible location of damage, is expanded to apply the static strain. The new damage index is expressed in terms of the static strains of undamaged and damaged structures. After calculating damage index, the possible damage locations in the structure are determined by the pattern recognition technique. The accuracy and feasibility of the proposed method is demonstrated by using experimental strain data from a scale model of floating structure.
This paper proposes actuator fault detection and adaptive fault-tolerant control algorithms using performance index and human-like learning for longitudinal autonomous vehicles. Conventional longitudinal controller for autonomous driving consists of supervisory, upper level and lower level controllers. In this paper, feedback control law and PID control algorithm have been used for upper level and lower level controllers, respectively. For actuator fault-tolerant control, adaptive rule has been designed using the gradient descent method with estimated coefficients. In order to adjust the control parameter used for determination of adaptation gain, human-like learning algorithm has been designed based on perceptron learning method using control errors and control parameter. It is designed that the learning algorithm determines current control parameter by saving it in memory and updating based on the cost function-based gradient descent method. Based on the updated control parameter, the longitudinal acceleration has been computed adaptively using feedback law for actuator fault-tolerant control. The finite window-based performance index has been designed for detection and evaluation of actuator performance degradation using control error.
This paper presents a novel structural damage detection method with a new damage index based on the statistical moments of dynamic responses of a structure under a random excitation. After a brief introduction to statistical moment theory, the principle of the new method is put forward in terms of a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system. The sensitivity of statistical moment to structural damage is discussed for various types of structural responses and different orders of statistical moment. The formulae for statistical moment-based damage detection are derived. The effect of measurement noise on damage detection is ascertained. The new damage index and the proposed statistical moment-based damage detection method are then extended to multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) systems with resort to the leastsquares method. As numerical studies, the proposed method is applied to both single and multi-story shear buildings. Numerical results show that the fourth-order statistical moment of story drifts is a more sensitive indicator to structural stiffness reduction than the natural frequencies, the second order moment of story drift, and the fourth-order moments of velocity and acceleration responses of the shear building. The fourth-order statistical moment of story drifts can be used to accurately identify both location and severity of structural stiffness reduction of the shear building. Furthermore, a significant advantage of the proposed damage detection method lies in that it is insensitive to measurement noise.
This paper describes a new simple QRS detection algorithm using index function based on resonance theory. The ECG signal can be modeled with several sinusoidal pulses and its first difference has some relations with the amplitude and frequency of sinusoidal pulse. Based on above fact, an index function, similar to the square of the imaginary part of a simple R-L-C circuit, was designed. A QRS complex is detected by applying the adaptive method to the response of index function. The algorithm showed a performance comparable to or higher than the other algorithms. Because it does not require any complicated preprocessing or postprocessing, it can be implemented in real time.
By adding user interface to the usual router, an improved functional router is implemented in this paper. Due to the massive amount of spatial data processing, spatial information processing area has been rapidly grown up in recent years based on powerful computer hardware and software development. Spatial index structures are the core engine of geographic information system(GIS). Analyzing and processing of spatial information using GIS has a lot of applications and the number application will be increased in the future. However, study on the under ground is in its infancy due to invisible characteristic of this information. This paper proposes the sub-surface fault detection system using the sub-surface layer information gathered from elastic wave. Detection of sub-surface fault provides very important information to the safety of above and sub-surface man made structures. Development of sub-surface fault detection system will serve as a pre-processing system assisting the interpretation of the geologist.
The V-grooved single-mode fiber in which a surface part of the core was removed was investigated as a quasi-distributed water detection sensor. In the normal state, the V-grooved region is filled and covered with a specific RI (Refractive Index)-matched medium, and the sensor experiences minimal optical loss. As water invades the V-grooved region, the material is dissolved and removed, and a considerable optical loss occurs owing to the large RI difference between the fiber core and water. The experimental results showed the feasibility of the device as a sensor element of the quasi-distributed water detection sensor system based on general optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR).
