Geometrically nonlinear axisymmetric bending analysis of shear deformable circular plates on a nonlinear three-parameter elastic foundation was made. Plates ranging from "thin" to "moderately thick" were investigated for three types of material: isotropic, transversely isotropic, and orthotropic. The differential equations were discretized by means of the finite difference method (FDM) and the differential quadrature method (DQM). The Newton-Raphson method was applied to find the solution. A parametric investigation using seven unknowns per node was presented. The novelty of the paper is that detailed numerical simulations were made to highlight the combined effects of the material properties and the boundary conditions on (i) the deflection, (ii) the stress resultants, and (iii) the external load. The formulation was verified through comparison studies. It was observed that the results are highly influenced from the boundary conditions, and from the material properties.
This paper discusses the design parameters that are required for the design of high-rise building foundations, and suggests that the method of assessment for these parameters should be consistent with the level of complexity involved for various stages in the design process. Requirements for effective ground investigation are discussed, together with relevant in-situ and laboratory test techniques for deriving the necessary strength and stiffness parameters. Some empirical correlations are also presented to assist in the early stages of design, and to act as a check for parameters that are deduced from more detailed testing. Pile load testing is then discussed and a method of interpreting bi-directional tests to obtain pile design parameters is outlined. Examples of the application of the assessment process are described, including high-rise projects in Dubai and Saudi Arabia.

The flow regimes for a Taylor-Couette flow with a stable, axial stratification in density are investigated using numerical simulation. The flow configuration identical to that in the experiment of Boubnov, et al. (1995) is considered in the present research. The main objectives of this investigation are to verify the experimental and numerical results carried out by Boubnov, et al. and Hua et al. (1997), respectively, and to further study the detailed flow fields and flow bifurcations. With increasing buoyancy frequency of the fluid (N), the stratification-dominated flow regime, called the S-regime, is observed. It is also confirmed that the important effect of an axial density stratification is to stabilize the flow field. The present numerical results are in good agreement with Boubnov, et al. and Hua et al.'s observations.

Cavitation instabilities in turbo-machinery such as cavitation surge and rotating cavitation are usually explained by the quasi-steady characteristics of cavitation, mass flow gain factor and cavitation compliance. However, there are certain cases when it is required to take account of unsteady characteristics. As an example of such cases, cavitation surge in industrial centrifugal pump caused by backflow vortex cavitation is presented and the importance of the phase delay of backflow vortex cavitation is clarified. First, fundamental characteristics of backflow vortex structure is shown followed by detailed discussions on the energy transfer under cavitation surge in the centrifugal pump. Then, the dynamics of backflow is discussed to explain a large phase lag observed in the experiments with the centrifugal pump.
In this paper, various reduced parts converter topologies and control strategies for power factor correction and motor control are reviewed and systematic design methodology is developed. From this investigation, the converter topologies could be mainly categorized into cascade type and unified type. The detailed operational principles are examined and the performance comparison is derived to illustrate merits and limitations of the converters. Simulation results are provided to help the better understanding of the theoretical description and several experimental results are presented on prototype induction motor better brush less dc (BLDC) motor drives, along with cascade and unified type converters.
As attention to the Internet from both companies and individuals is rapidly on the increase, hundreds of new websites are opening in a single day. Along with such a high attention to the Internet, to set up an effective website needs efficient evaluation and reliable evaluation criterions for the website. The existing homepage contests and evaluation models are limited to certain websites in a special field or to the systemic side and to the contents, which in fact weakened the development of detailed evaluation sections and items possibly measured. This study is designed to integrate and seek out methods and success factors that should be considered when a website is built up, discovering evaluation criterions and making evaluation models objectively possible to be measured. The study focused on investigation into a new measurement standard and model by considering the previous studies, in order to suggest the followings: Centering the 7 top evaluation sections by type of each website such as (1) Service, (2) Mechanism, (3) Structure & Navigation, (4) Usability, (5) Contents (6) Community, (7) Communication, the study suggests an objective and reasonable website evaluation model on a basis of common factors considered in an integral and optimum view.

This paper describes a detailed experimental investigation of heat transfer in a reciprocating rectangular channel fitted with rib structures with particular reference to the design of a piston for marine propulsive diesel engine. The parametric test matrix involves Reynolds number, reciprocating frequency, and reciprocating radius, respectively in the ranges, 1,000~6,000, 1.7~2.5 Hz, and 7~15 cm with four different rib arrangements. The rib arrangements have considerable influences on the heat transfer in the reciprocating channel due to the modified vortex flow structure. The experimental data confirm that the increases in the heat transfer can be seen in order of Case (b), Case (c), Case (d), and Case (a).

This Paper describes a detailed experimental investigation of heat transfer in a reciprocating smooth rectangular duct having only the bottom wall heated with reference to the design of a piston for a marine propulsive diesel engine The Parametric test matrix involves Reynolds number and reciprocating radius, respectively, in the range of 1.280∼4.100, and 7∼15 cm with five different reciprocating frequency tested. namely. 1.7, 2.2, and 2.6 Hz. The effects of three different hemi-triangular wavy type tapers on the heat transfer in the reciprocating rectangular channel using the air as a working fluid were check out. The present work confirms that the Nusselt number in the channel with the triangular wavy type taper is lower than without the triangular wavy type taper.
A numerical investigation was performed to determine the effect of the Gurney flap on a NACA 23012 airfoil. A Navier-Stokes code, RAMPANT, was used to calculate the flow field about the airfoil. Fully-turbulent results were obtained using the standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ two-equation turbulence model. The numerical solutions showed that the Gurney flap increased both lift and drag. These results suggested that the Gurney flap served to increase the effective camber of the airfoil. The Gurney flap provided a significant increase in the lift-to-drag ratio relatively at low angle of attack and for high lift coefficient. It turned out that 0.6% chord size of flap was the best. The numerical results exhibited detailed flow structures at the trailing edge and provided a possible explanation for the increased aerodynamic performance.
The central-western Korean Peninsula contains records of an Early Mesozoic collisional event related to the final amalgamation of the East Asian continent. Here, we present a renewed geologic map of the Deokjeok and Soya islands in the central-western Korean Peninsula and its explanatory note. Our geologic map was based on a detailed investigation of the northeastern area of both islands, which is characterized by a complex fault and shear zone system that accommodated the crustal deformation related to the Mesozoic post-collisional orogenic collapse and the subsequent structural inversion. We suggest future directions of study aiming at addressing issues regarding the deformational responses of crust to the Mesozoic tectonic transition and orogenic cycles.
