  • In this study, a design process of robotic cell is presented. This paper focuses only on the automation of workpiece handling with robot. The presented design process enables us to analyze effectiv ely the original production system and to redesign it as an optimum production system with robots. An original production system is analyzed with respect to its economical and technological requirements for automation. If automation of the given production system is feasible, the conceptual design for automation is firstly derived. Next, the detail design is derived for the optimum conceptual design. Finally, an optimum system solution is determined after the economical and technical evaluation of all the derived detail designs. The all specifications of each element of the redesigned production system and its layout are determined at the detail design phase. This paper shows a low cost supporting tool for layout design of robotic cell with SCARA type robots.

  • In this paper, a computer aided process design technique, utilizing a forging simulator and a commercial CAD software, is presented together with its related design system for cold-former forging of ball joints. The forging sequence design is carried out through user-computer interaction by using design templates, design database, experience or knowledge-based rules and some basic laws found in the literature. The forging simulation technique is used to verify the process design. The detail designs including die set drawings and die manufacturing information are automatically generated. It has been shown that the engineer ing and design productivity is much improved by the presented approach in the practical standpoint of process design engineers.

  • BIM(Building Information Modeling) ordering manuals and guidelines are diffused with the recent BIM activation. However, it is causing drawbacks such as an increase of work at each design stage and a decline of BIM application level that the standard of making up and managing BIM is vague and it includes comprehensive meaning. Therefore, this study aims to secure BIM work standard by establishing BIM making-out standard based on LOD(Level of Detail) classification considering domestic design process. It compared each definition of LOD by analyzing domestic and foreign BIM guideline examples, and figured out insufficiency of existing domestic and foreign design process and BIM guidelines. Moreover, it drew architects' work articles for promoting the progression of the efficient design process, and analyzed BIM requirements on design process, dividing BIM application scale by field. Through this analyzing process, it finally established BIM making-out standard classified by design process. The effects of establishing BIM making-out standard would include improving a division of labor and cooperation environment by creating integrated BIM model on design stages, advancing work efficiency by preventing a repetition and an increase of work, and upgrading project completeness and design quality. Besides, it can secure BIM work standard by clarifying responsibility for working steps. BIM making-out standard established by this study will contribute to developing the future BIM work standard document and BIM guideline as a data base.

  • It is very often necessary to search for similar parts during designing a new product because its parts are often easily designed by modifying existing similar parts. In this way, the design time and cost can be reduced. Thus it would be nice to have an efficient similarity comparison algorithm that can be used anytime in the design process. There have been many approaches to compare shape similarity between two solids. In this paper, two parts represented in B-Rep is compared in two steps: one for overall appearances and the other for detail features. In the first step, geometric information is used in low level of detail for easy and fast pre-classification by the overall appearance. In the second step, feature information is used to compare the detail shape in high level of detail to find more similar design. To realize the idea above, a multi resolution algorithm is proposed so that a given solid is described by an overall appearance in a low resolution and by detail features in high resolution. Using this multi-resolution representation, parts can be compared based on the overall appearance first so that the number of parts to be compared in high resolution is reduced, and then detail features are investigated to retrieve the most similar part. In this way, computational time can be reduced by the fast classification in the first step while reliability can be preserved by detail comparison in the second step.

  • This study concerned the interoperability between the structural-analysis model and the default detail model in steel structures available for the structural-design process based on BIM. The purpose of the study was to develop an interface module that can perform data conversion between the analysis and design applications and the BIM applications, through the dotnet frame work development environment using OpenAPI provided by the BIM application vendor. The direct-link method was applied for BIM interoperability. A basic-frame model for detail design and modeling was created from the structural-analysis model to verify if the application was developed. Finally, the proposed process was compared with the existing process to verify the efficiency of the former.

  • A derivative based approach to process optimal design in powder forging is presented. The process model, the formulation for process optimal design, and the schemes for the evaluation of the design sensitivity, and an iterative procedure for the optimization are described in detail. The validity of the schemes for the evaluation of the design sensitivity is examined by performing numerical tests. The capability of the proposed approach to deal with diverse process parameters and objective functions is demonstrated through applications to some selected process design problems.

  • Recently, a very large vessel's maneuvering performance, rudder performance and rudder design's importance is considered to be an important subject. There have been few studies on the design process of rudder device before. The aim of this paper is to investigate a design process of rudder device and to propose a generalized design process of rudder device. Firstly, we investigated the rudder device design process of Korean major shipyards. And the differences of a torque calculation method, rudder section design, maneuvering performance examination method, etc were analyzed theoretically. Secondly, the design process of rudder device was divided into concept design, initial design and detail design. In concept design, a rudder area was estimated and its validity was examined. In initial design, rudder profile and design method has been selected through rudder form determination process. And principal dimension and steering gear capacity were determined. Maneuvering performance was also examined by simulation tool. In detail design, design criteria considered in rudder initial design has been investigated thoroughly. Also a rudder torque, rudder cavitation performance and rudder structure analysis were estimated. And maneuvering performance was also examined by model test. Finally, based on the results of investigation, the design process of rudder device was generalized and proposed.

  • Since construction projects are large and complex, it is especially important to provide concurrent construction process to BIM models with construction automation. In particular, the schematic Quantity Take-Off (QTO) estimation on the BIM models is a strategy, which can be used to assist decision making in just minutes, because 70-80% of construction costs are determined by designers' decisions in the early design stage. This paper suggests a QTO process and a QTO prototype system within the building frame of Open BIM to improve the low reliability of estimation in the early design stage. The research consists of the following four steps: (1) analyzing Level of Detail (LOD) at the early design stage to apply to the QTO process and system, (2) BIM modeling for Open BIM based QTO, (3) checking the quality of the BIM model based on the checklist for applying to QTO and improving constructability, and (4) developing and verifying a QTO prototype system. The proposed QTO system is useful for improving the reliability of schematic estimation through decreasing risk factors and shortening time required.
