Software-based Simple Lock-in Amplifier and Built-in Sound Card for Compact and Cost-effective Terahertz Time-domain Spectroscopy System

  • A typical terahertz time-domain spectroscopy system requires large, expensive, and heavy hardware such as a lock-in amplifier and a function generator. In this study, we replaced the lock-in amplifier and the function generator with a single sound card built into a typical desktop computer to significantly reduce the system size, weight, and cost. The sound card serves two purposes: 1 kHz chopping signal generation and raw data acquisition. A unique software lock-in (Python coding program to eliminate noise from raw data) method was developed and successfully extracted THz time-domain signals with a signal-to-noise ratio of ~40,000 (the intensity ratio between the peak and average noise levels). The built-in sound card with the software lock-in method exhibited sufficiently good performance compared with the hardware-based method.

Accuracy evaluation of dental models manufactured by CAD/CAM milling method and 3D printing method

  • PURPOSE. To evaluate the accuracy of a model made using the computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacture (CAD/CAM) milling method and 3D printing method and to confirm its applicability as a work model for dental prosthesis production. MATERIALS AND METHODS. First, a natural tooth model (ANA-4, Frasaco, Germany) was scanned using an oral scanner. The obtained scan data were then used as a CAD reference model (CRM), to produce a total of 10 models each, either using the milling method or the 3D printing method. The 20 models were then scanned using a desktop scanner and the CAD test model was formed. The accuracy of the two groups was compared using dedicated software to calculate the root mean square (RMS) value after superimposing CRM and CAD test model (CTM). RESULTS. The RMS value ($152{\pm}52{\mu}m$) of the model manufactured by the milling method was significantly higher than the RMS value ($52{\pm}9{\mu}m$) of the model produced by the 3D printing method. CONCLUSION. The accuracy of the 3D printing method is superior to that of the milling method, but at present, both methods are limited in their application as a work model for prosthesis manufacture.

RDP-based Lateral Movement Detection using PageRank and Interpretable System using SHAP (PageRank 특징을 활용한 RDP기반 내부전파경로 탐지 및 SHAP를 이용한 설명가능한 시스템)

  • As the Internet developed, various and complex cyber attacks began to emerge. Various detection systems were used outside the network to defend against attacks, but systems and studies to detect attackers inside were remarkably rare, causing great problems because they could not detect attackers inside. To solve this problem, studies on the lateral movement detection system that tracks and detects the attacker's movements have begun to emerge. Especially, the method of using the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is simple but shows very good results. Nevertheless, previous studies did not consider the effects and relationships of each logon host itself, and the features presented also provided very low results in some models. There was also a problem that the model could not explain why it predicts that way, which resulted in reliability and robustness problems of the model. To address this problem, this study proposes an interpretable RDP-based lateral movement detection system using page rank algorithm and SHAP(Shapley Additive Explanations). Using page rank algorithms and various statistical techniques, we create features that can be used in various models and we provide explanations for model prediction using SHAP. In this study, we generated features that show higher performance in most models than previous studies and explained them using SHAP.

  • A computer-assisted desktop is developed for layout design of a concrete gravity dam on the basis of safety and economy. Using a set of regression equations, a dam layout is proposed. With reference to the regression equations and relevant input data, overall dam dimensions are determined by satisfying the stability criteria jointly under usual, unusual, and extreme loading conditions with the desired hydraulic conformity. Among several feasible alternatives, the program enables a designer to select the optimum layout, which corresponds to the minimum total cost of the structure. The method is applied to a case study to examine dimensions of proposed alternatives and to compare them with those of an existing dam.

  • A severe accident training simulator that can simulate important severe accident phenomena and nuclear plant behaviors is developed. The simulator also provides several interactive control devices, which are helpful to assess results of a particular accident management behavior. A simple and direct dynamic linked library (DLL) data communication method is used for the development of the simulator. Using the DLL method, various control devices were implemented to provide an interactive control function during simulation. Finally, a training model is suggested for accident mitigation training and its performance is verified through application runs.

A Study on the VDT Workstations Usage for Office Workers

  • Objective and Background: Due to increase in Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) relating to computer use, a number of ergonomics recommendations have been proposed in order to tackle this problem. However, some of these recommendations have been conflicting. Method: This study was to survey the VDT (Visual Display Terminal) use of office workers. The subjects were 452 workers at 13 places of business and the data were collected by self-administered questionnaire. Results: As a result, prevalence of self-reported MSDs of all VDT workers was 90.2% and shoulder took up 57.0% and neck 38.3% by symptom part of body. The population of computer use of more than 6h/day was 84.5%, and 33.8% also reported using the VDT 2~3h/day without the rest time. Desktop computer users were 95.6%, and a 17-inch monitor accounted for 42.0% among the desktop users. As a result of satisfaction survey on overall computer work, 21.1% of the total respondents said satisfied, desk complaint was about 24.6%, and chair complaint was 33.4%. Despite the importance of computer environment, satisfaction was from fair to uncomfortable. Conclusion and Application: In conclusion, office workers are prone to the MSDs due to their work environment. Additionally, this study found that task was a significant effect for the majority of dependent variables, and therefore, the improvement of computer workstations work environment is urgent, and the improvement of desk height adjustment, chair seat size (length, width), backrest condition, location of keyboard (mouse) and arm rest is required.

  • The problem of common difficulties for the implemented business that imposing the Value Engineering(VE) is crucial. Because of the difference in effect of VE by how an abstract concept as function digitize. Furthermore, to improve achievement of VE,, the advancement of VE is demanded. The most of business conducting the VE is pushing this method with the purpose of cost reduction. As explaining this product, the cost occupies the desktop of F1 and the component of product 54% with the result of analyzing the coefficient of functional requirement. Then the functional cost can be confirmed. Through the result of this study, the fact that the desktop, the bluetooth, the probe occupy the most of products with satisfying the function is able to confirm. An effort for cost reduction in purchasing through adjusting a stable quality demanded for the cost reduction is needed. Also, another effort of proper price reduction by diversification of buyer business is needed also.

  • Smartphones and smartpads have a lot of advantages such as high convenience and portability. Also, they can effectively manage enormous amounts of information based on their high performance and plentiful applications. As such devices have been frequently used, many users manage various types of information using the devices. Recently, during conferences or seminars, smart device users often try to utilize stored resources on their devices and present them visually. Unfortunately, since smart devices have small displays, there is an essential difficulty in visual sharing of information. In this paper, we propose a method which integrates screens of several android smart devices and supports sharing of the integrated screen through a large display, presenting a screen sharing system for android smart devices. The developed system integrates display screens of several smart devices into a screen and shows the integrated screen through a large display connected to a desktop computer. In addition, to support the effective sharing of screens, the system provides functions for adjusting the number and the size of screens on a large display. The functions are controlled on a smart device and/or a desktop computer.

  • The study has planned to analyze the most typical specification validation in Korea and the other countries, which shows the well-formed and schema validation, in purpose to enhance users' conveniences. Also, we suggested the validation system to provide the information compatibility regarding to application programs for non-expert. The featured KML specification supported by the VWorld 3D Desktop and the Google Earth. Based on this above estimation, the system has been designed to inform potential problems and the applicability in 3D Desktop and Google Earth for the user. The KML information passed through the proposed validation is simply expressed on the map, so as instructed the information on the program selection and additional details instruct users as a text file. When not being suitable for the proposed program, another program can be considered, and the problems which may be occurred are also announced to increase the compatibility of KML.

Feasibility of a New Desktop Motion Analysis System with a Video Game Console for Assessing Various Three-Dimensional Wrist Motions

  • Background: The restriction of wrist motion results in limited hand function, and the evaluation of the range of wrist motion is related to the evaluation of wrist function. To analyze and compare the wrist motion during four selected tasks, we developed a new desktop motion analysis system using the motion controller for a home video game console. Methods: Eighteen healthy, right-handed subjects performed 15 trials of selective tasks (dart throwing, hammering, circumduction, and winding thread on a reel) with both wrists. The signals of light-emitting diode markers attached to the hand and forearm were detected by the optic receptor in the motion controller. We compared the results between both wrists and between motions with similar motion paths. Results: The parameters (range of motion, offset, coupling, and orientations of the oblique plane) for wrist motion were not significantly different between both wrists, except for radioulnar deviation for hammering and the orientation for thread winding. In each wrist, the ranges for hammering were larger than those for dart throwing. The offsets and the orientations of the oblique plane were not significantly different between circumduction and thread winding. Conclusions: The results for the parameters of dart throwing, hammering, and circumduction of our motion analysis system using the motion controller were considerably similar to those of the previous studies with three-dimensional reconstruction with computed tomography, electrogoniometer, and motion capture system. Therefore, our system may be a cost-effective and simple method for wrist motion analysis.
