  • Bridges are lifeline and integral components of transportation system that are susceptible to seismic actions, their vulnerability assessment is essential for seismic risk assessment and mitigation. The vulnerability assessment of bridges common in Pakistan is very important as it is seismically very active region and the available code for the seismic design of bridges is obsolete. This research presents seismic vulnerability assessment of three real case simply supported multi-span reinforced concrete bridges commonly found in northern Pakistan, having one, two and three bents with circular piers. The vulnerability assessment is carried through the non-linear dynamic time history analyses for the derivation of fragility curves. Finite element based numerical models of the bridges were developed in MIDAS CIVIL (2015) and analyzed through with non-linear dynamic and incremental dynamic analyses, using a suite of bridge-specific natural spectrum compatible ground motion records. Seismic responses of shear key, bearing pad, expansion joint and pier components of each bridges were recorded during analysis and retrieved for performance based analysis. Fragility curves were developed for the bearing pads, shear key, expansion joint and pier of the bridges that first reach ultimate limit state. Dynamic analysis and the derived fragility curves show that ultimate limit state of bearing pads, shear keys and expansion joints of the bridges exceed first, followed by the piers ultimate limit state for all the three bridges. Mean collapse capacities computed for all the components indicated that bearing pads, expansion joints, and shear keys exceed the ultimate limit state at lowest seismic intensities.

  • This paper presents seismic performance and reliability evaluation on steel-timber hybrid shear wall systems composed of steel moment resisting frames and infill light frame wood shear walls. Based on experimental observations, damage assessment was conducted to determine the appropriate damage-related performance objectives for the hybrid shear wall systems. Incremental time-history dynamic analyses were conducted to establish a database of seismic responses for the hybrid systems with various structural configurations. The associated reliability indices and failure probabilities were calculated by two reliability methods (i.e., fragility analysis and response surface method). Both methods yielded similar estimations of failure probabilities. This study indicated the greatly improved seismic performance of the steel-timber hybrid shear wall systems with stronger infill wood shear walls. From a probabilistic perspective, the presented results give some insights on quantifying the seismic performance of the hybrid system under different seismic hazard levels. The reliability-based approaches also serve as efficient tools to assess the performance-based seismic design methodology and calibration of relative code provisions for the proposed steel-timber hybrid shear wall systems.

  • This study is to investigate the relationships between heel height and macro-economic factors - recession and unemployment; and to analyze the time lags reflecting economic factors on heel height index using U.S. data. The life-history evolution theory was applied to propose the relationships studied. The data for the heel height measurements of women's shoes - pump style only - were obtained from US Vogue fashion editorial sections on spring and fall editions from 1950 to 2014. I divided the heel height by the length of the shoes in order to standardize the data. Total of 1581 samples were used, and heel height data were aggregated to create a yearly average. To explore the relationships between macro-economic factors and heel height, this study used OLS of Stata 13 program. The main findings show that unemployment rates influenced heel height for three years in a positive direction. Furthermore, the effects of unemployment rate from two years ago on the current heel height were very close to being on a significant level.

  • Earthquake excitations may induce important amount of seismic energy into structures. Current design philosophy mainly deals with the plastic deformations of replaceable energy dissipating devices rather than damages accumulated on structural members. Since earthquake damage is substantially concentrated on these devices they could be replaced after severe earthquakes. In this study, the efficiency of steel cushion (SC) on seismic improvement of a vulnerable reinforced concrete (RC) frame is determined by means of several numerical simulations. The cyclic shear behaviors of SCs were determined by performing quasi-static tests. The test results were the main basis of the theoretical model of SCs which were used in the numerical analysis. These analyses were performed on three types of RC frames namely bare frame (BF), full-braced frame (F-BF) and semi-braced frame (S-BF). According to analysis results; implementation of SCs has considerable effects in reducing the storey shear forces and storey drifts. Moreover plastic energy demands of structural elements were reduced which indicates a significant improvement in seismic behavior of the RC frame preventing damage accumulation on structural elements. Full-braced frame having SCs with the thickness of 25 mm has better performance than semi-braced frame interms of energy dissipation. However, global energy dissipation demand of S-BF and F-BF having SCs with the thickness of 18 mm are almost similar.

  • The construction of container terminal at Brani, Singapore required the improvement of soft clay layer having the thickness of about 6.5m, average moisture content of 79.4%, liquid limit of 90.4%, plastic limit of 21.8%, field vane strength of 10 to 25 KPa, pre-consolidation pressure of 225 to 60 KPa and compression index of 0.4 to 1.0. For the improvement of this layer, Colbon drains of 1.3m spacing in triangular pattern were installed to the bottom of the layer and surcharge of more than 11.25m high sand fill was later applied to the treated area. The settlement and lateral displacement of the ground were measured and the speed of surcharge filling was controlled, based on these readings. The removal of surcharge was determinied using the estimated time for the 90% degree of consolidation under the design pressure of 180KPa. The field and laboratory test results show that the soft clay layer has been improved substantially in its strength and consolidation characteristics: increase in strength of about 50KPa and pre-consolidation pressure and decrease in void ratio and compression index.

  • Vehicle structures are composed of many substructure connected to one another by various types of mechanical joints. In vehicle engineering it is important to study these connected structures under various dynamic forces for the evaluations of fatigue life and stress concentration exactly. It is difficult to obtain the accurate load history of specified positions because of the errors such as modeling, measurement and etc. In the beginning of design exact load data are actually necessary for the fatigue strength and life analysis to minimize the cost and time of designing. In this paper, the procedure of practical dynamic force determination is developed by the combination of the principal stresses of F. E. Analysis and experiment. Least square pseudo inverse matrix is adopted to obtain in inverse matrix of analyzed stresses matrix. The error minimization method utilizes the inaccurate measured error and the shifting error that the whole data is stiffed over real data. The least square criterion is adopted to avoid these non. Finally, to verify the proposed procedure, a bus is analyzed. This measurement and prediction technology can be extended to the structural modification of any geometric shape in complex structure.

  • Structures with additional frictional damping system have strong nonlinearity that the dynamic behavior is highly affected by the relative magnitude between frictional force and excitation load. In this study, normalized response spectra of the structures with non-dimensional friction force are obtained through nonlinear time history analyses of the mass-normalized single degree of freedom systems using 20 ground motion data recorded on rock site. The variation of the control performance of frictional damping system is investigated in terms of the dynamic load and the structural natural period, of which effects were not considered in the previous studies. Least square curve fitting equations are presented for describing those normalized response spectrum and optimal non-dimensional friction forces are obtained for controlling the peak displacement and absolute acceleration of the structure based on the derivative of the curve-fitted design spectrum.

  • A number of combat simulation models are scattered and the analytic solution approaches have experienced very difficult computational efforts. Today´s computer communication technology let people to do many unrealistic things possible and the use of those technologies is becoming increasingly prevalent throughout the military operation. Both DIS and ADS are welled defined computer aided military simulations. This study discusses a simulation of stochastic combat network modeling through Internet space. We have developed two separate simulation models, one for clients and another for server, and validated for conducting studies with these models. The object-oriented design was necessary to define the system entities and their relationship, to partition functionality into system entities, and to transform functional metrics into realizations derived from system component behaviors. Heterogeneous forces for each side are assumed at any battle node. The time trajectories for mean number of survivors and combat history at each node, some important combat measures, and relative difference computations between models were made. We observe and may conclude that the differences exit and some of these are significant based on a limited number of experiments.

  • In this paper, we propose a location-prediction structure that can provide user service in advance. It consists of seven steps and supplies intelligent services which can forecast user's location. Context information collected from physical sensors and a history database is so difficult that it can't present importance of data and abstraction of data because of heterogeneous data type. Hence, we offer the location-prediction that change data type from heterogeneous data to homogeneous data. Extracted data is clustered by SOFM, then it gets user's location information by ARIMA and realizes the services by a reasoning engine. In order to validate the proposed location-prediction, we built a test-bed and test it by the scenario.

  • Car emblems are representative of both the car and driver. Each emblem had its own distinct history and meaning. Today, customers and car designers require high quality car emblems. Today's car emblems are made of plastic, metal, steel, and aluminum. The emblems need to represent the designer's creative idea and symbol of car. On the other hand, the development period of an emblem requires a minimum of 6 months. When the design of an emblem is changed, more time is required. The paradigm shift of a car emblem changes from analog to digital. In this research, a digital LCD emblem system and the method of attaching it to the airbag cover were developed. When the airbag is engaged, digital LCD emblem system is not separated from the airbag.
