  • An efficient and high-fidelity design approach for wing-body shape optimization is presented. Depending on the size of design space and the number of design of variable, aerodynamic shape optimization process is carried out via different optimization strategies at each design stage. In the first stage, global optimization techniques are applied to planform design with a few geometric design variables. In the second stage, local optimization techniques are used for wing surface design with a lot of design variables to maintain a sufficient design space with a high DOF (Degree of Freedom) geometric change. For global optimization, Kriging method in conjunction with Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used. Asearching algorithm of EI (Expected Improvement) points is introduced to enhance the quality of global optimization for the wing-planform design. For local optimization, a discrete adjoint method is adopted. By the successive combination of global and local optimization techniques, drag minimization is performed for a multi-body aircraft configuration while maintaining the baseline lift and the wing weight at the same time. Through the design process, performances of the test models are remarkably improved in comparison with the single stage design approach. The performance of the proposed design framework including wing planform design variables can be efficiently evaluated by the drag decomposition method, which can examine the improvement of various drag components, such as induced drag, wave drag, viscous drag and profile drag.

Optimization of Satellite Honeycomb Platforms (하니콤 위성 플래폼의 최적 설계)

  • An optimization of satellite honeycomb platforms under sever space environment is performed. There are many optimization constraints for space environment to be considered. A modified method of feasible direction and a genetic algorithm are used to optimize the satellite platform structures. The design constraints are concerned with bearing stresses at joints and natural frequencies. The results from the optimization methods are compared. The numerical results show that natural frequency constraints are dominant to reach the optimum design. This study verifies the design of satellite honeycomb platforms and suggests an optimal platform design.

  • Lots of effort toward design optimizations have been paid for a cost-effective system design in various ways from a transistor level to RTL designs. In this paper, we propose a bit level optimization of an adder design for expanding its design space. For the bit-level optimization, a heterogeneous adder organization utilizing a mixture of carry propagation schemes is proposed to design a delay-area efficient adder which were not available in an ordinary design space. Then, we develop an optimization method based on Integer Linear Programming to search the expanded design space of the heterogeneous adder. The novelty of the Proposed architecture and optimization method is introducing a bit level reconstruction/recombination of IPs which have same functionality but different speed and area characteristics for producing more find-grained delay-area optimization.

Integrated Optimization Design of Carbon Fiber Composite Framework for Small Lightweight Space Camera

  • A Carbon Fiber Composite (CFC) framework was designed for a small lightweight space camera. According to the distribution characteristics of each optical element in the optical system, CFC (M40J) was chosen to accomplish the design of the framework. TC4 embedded parts were used to solve the low accuracy of the CFC framework interface problem. An integrated optimization method and the optimization strategy which combined a genetic global optimization algorithm with a downhill simplex local optimization algorithm were adopted to optimize the structure parameters of the framework. After optimization, the total weight of the CFC framework and the TC4 embedded parts is 15.6 kg, accounting for only 18.4% that of the camera. The first order frequency of the camera reaches 104.8 Hz. Finally, a mechanical environment test was performed, and the result demonstrates that the first order frequency of the camera is 102 Hz, which is consistent with the simulation result. It further verifies the rationality and correctness of the optimization result. The integrated optimization method mentioned in this paper can be applied to the structure design of other space cameras, which can greatly improve the structure design efficiency.

Optimal Shape Design of Dielectric Micro Lens Using FDTD and Topology Optimization

  • In this paper, we present an optimal shape design method for a dielectric microlens which is used to focus an incoming infrared plane wave in wideband, by exploiting the finite difference time domain (FDTD) technique and the topology optimization technique. Topology optimization is a scheme to search an optimal shape by adjusting the material properties, which are design variables, within the design space. And by introducing the adjoint variable method, we can effectively calculate a derivative of the objective function with respect to the design variable. To verify the proposed method, a shape design problem of a dielectric microlens is tested when illuminated by a transverse electric (TE)-polarized infrared plane wave. In this problem, the design variable is the dielectric constant within the design space of a dielectric microlens. The design objective is to maximally focus the incoming magnetic field at a specific point in wideband.

A B-spline based Branch & Bound Algorithm for Global Optimization (전역 최적화를 위한 B-스플라인 기반의 Branch & Bound알고리즘)

  • This paper introduces a B-spline based branch & bound algorithm for global optimization. The branch & bound is a well-known algorithm paradigm for global optimization, of which key components are the subdivision scheme and the bound calculation scheme. For this, we consider the B-spline hypervolume to approximate an objective function defined in a design space. This model enables us to subdivide the design space, and to compute the upper & lower bound of each subspace where the bound calculation is based on the LHS sampling points. We also describe a search tree to represent the searching process for optimal solution, and explain iteration steps and some conditions necessary to carry out the algorithm. Finally, the performance of the proposed algorithm is examined on some test problems which would cover most difficulties faced in global optimization area. It shows that the proposed algorithm is complete algorithm not using heuristics, provides an approximate global solution within prescribed tolerances, and has the good possibility for large scale NP-hard optimization.

  • The conventional reliability based design optimization(RBDO) methods require high computational cost compared with the deterministic design optimization(DO) methods, therefore it is hard to apply directly to large-scaled problems such as an aerodynamic shape design optimization. In this study, to overcome this computational limitation the efficient RBDO procedure with the two-point approximation(TPA) and adjoint sensitivity analysis is proposed, that the computational requirement is nearly the same as DO and the reliability accuracy is good compared with that of RBDO. Using this, the 3-D aerodynamic shape design optimization is performed very efficiently.

Shape Optimization of Arches (아치구조의 형상 최적화)

  • This paper considers the problem of optimum shaping of steel arches subjected to general loading. The weight of arches is considered as the objective function and the appropriate combinations of section forces, material volume, arc length, and closed section area of arches are considered as the stress constraints. The shape optimization problems are formulated in terms of the design variables of sectional areas of each element. First the cost sensitivity of the design is investigated. Then the investigation comprises the search for the optimum arch form as well as the optimum area distribution along the arch. Two spaces of shape optimization algorithm will be treated, the first space corresponding to the section optimization by the Modified Newton Raphson Method, and the second space to the coordinate optimization by the Powell Method. The optimization algorithm is evaluated and the optimum span-rise ratios for the given arches are evaluated.

Further Improvement in Rotor Aerodynamics Estimation in Helicopter Conceptual Design and Optimization Framework for a Compound Rotorcraft

  • In order to include the design capability for a compound rotorcraft in a helicopter conceptual design and optimization framework, relevant further improvement was planned and conducted. Previously, a certain conceptual design optimization framework was developed by the present authors to design a modern rotorcraft with single main and tail rotor. The previously developed framework was further improved to expand its capability for a compound rotorcraft. Specifically, its power estimation algorithm was upgraded by using a comprehensive rotorcraft analysis program, CAMRAD II. The presently improved conceptual design and optimization framework was validated using data of the XH-59A aircraft.

Structural Design Optimization of the Aluminum Space Frame Vehicle (알루미늄 스페이스 프레임 차량의 구조 최적화 설계 기법)

  • Due to the global environment problems and the consumer's need for higher vehicle performance, it becomes very important for the global car makers to reduce vehicle weight. To reduce vehicle weight, many car makers have tried to use lightweight materials, for example, aluminum, magnesium, and plastics, for the vehicle structures and components. Especially, the ASF(aluminum space frame) is known for the excellent concept of the vehicle to satisfy structural rigidity, safety performance and weight reduction. In this research, the design of experiments and the multi-disciplinary optimization technique were utilized to meet the weight and structural rigidity target of the ASF. For the structural performance of the ASF, the locations and the size of aluminum extruded frames, aluminum cast nodes, and the aluminum sheets were optimized. As a result, the optimization design procedure has been set up to meet both structural and weight target of the ASF, and the assembled ASF showed good structural performance and weight reduction.
