  • In this study a analytical model for a structure with buckling-restrained unbonded knee-braces is proposed, and a performance-based seismic design procedure for such a system Is provided. The proposed structure system has advantage of simplifying the structural design procedure in that the hinge-connected main structural members, such as beams and columns, are designed only for gravity loads, and all the lateral seismic load is resisted by the braces. The design procedure is based on the concept of equivalent damping, and is implemented to the capacity spectrum method. Parametric study is performed with design variables such as yield stress and cross-sectional area of knee-braces to find out proper slope of the braces.

  • One of the objectives of any task design is to provide a safe and helpful workplace for the employees. The safety and health module may include means for confronting the design with safety and health regulations and standards as well as tools for obstacles and collisions detection (such as error models and simulators), Virtual Reality is a leading edge technology which has only very recently become available on platforms and at prices accessible to the majority of simulation engineers. The design of an automated manufacturing system is a complicated, multidisciplinary task that requires involvement of several specialists. In this paper, a design procedure that facilitates the safety and ergonomic considerations of an automated manufacturing system are described. The procedure consists of the following major steps. Data collection and analysis of the data, creation of a three-dimensional simulation model of the work environment, simulation for safety analysis and risk assessment, development of safety solutions, selection of the preferred solutions, implementation of the selected solutions, reporting, and training. When improving the safety of an existing system the three-dimensional simulation model helps the designer to perceive the work from operators point of view objectively and safely without the exposure to hazards of the actual system.

  • In this study, a procedure to design an optimal LCVA that maximizes the equivalent damping ratio added to the primary structure subjected to along-wind excitation is proposed. That design procedure does not only consider the natural frequency and damping ratio of the LCVA, but also the proportion of the U-shaped liquid, which is closely related to the participation ratio of the liquid mass in inertial force. In addition, constraints to ensure the U-shape of the liquid are considered in the design process, so that suboptimal solutions that violate the optimal tuning law partly are adopted as a candidate of the optimal LCVA. The proposed design procedure of the LCVA is applied to the control of the 76-story benchmark building, and the optimal proportions of the liquid shape under various design conditions are compared.

  • A design procedure using spatial Fourier transform is presented for a structural-acoustic coupled radiator that can emit sound in the desired direction with high power and low side lobe level. The design procedure consists of three steps. Firstly, the structural-acoustic coupled radiator is chosen to obtain strong coupling between structural vibration and acoustic pressure. The radiator is composed by two spaces which are separated by a wall. Spaces can be categorized as reverberant finite space and unbounded semi-infinite space, and the wall are composed of two plates and an opening. The velocities on the wall are predicted. Secondly, directivity and energy distribution of radiator are predicted in wave number domain using spatial Fourier transform. Finally, optimal design variables are calculated using a dual optimal algorithm. Its computational example is presented including the directivity and resulting pressure distribution using proposed procedure.

  • Three methods of design sensitivity analysis for structures such as numerical method, analytical method and semi-analytical method have been developed for the last three decades. Although analytical design sensitivity analysis can provide very exact result, it is difficult to implement into practical design problems. Therefore, numerical method such as finite difference method is widely used to simply obtain the design sensitivity in most cases. The numerical differentiation is sufficiently accurate and reliable fur most linear problems. However, it turns out that the numerical differentiation is inefficient and inaccurate in nonlinear design sensitivity analysis because its computational cost depends on the number of design variables and large numerical errors can be included. Thus the semi-analytical method is more suitable for complicated design problems. Moreover, semi-analytical method is easy to be performed in design procedure, which can be coupled with an analysis solver such as commercial finite element package. In this paper, implementation procedure fur the semi-analytical design sensitivity analysis outside of the commercial finite element package is studied and the computational technique is proposed for evaluating the partial differentiation of internal nodal force, so called pseudo-load. Numerical examples coupled with commercial finite element package are shown to verify usefulness of proposed semi-analytical sensitivity analysis procedure and computational technique for pseudo-load.

  • Many coastal engineering designs utilize empirical formulas containing the Equivalent Deep-water Wave Height (EDWH), which is normally given a priori. However, no studies have explicitly discussed a method for determining the EDWH and the resulting design wave heights (DEWH) under irregular wave conditions. Unfortunately, it has been the case in many design practices that the EDWH is incorrectly estimated by dividing the Shallow-water Wave Height (SWH) at the structural position with its corresponding shoaling coefficient of regular wave. The present study reexamines the relationship between the Shallow-water Wave Height (SWH) at the structural position and its corresponding EDWH. Then, a new procedure is proposed to facilitate the correct estimation of EDWH. In this procedure, the EDWH and DEWH are determined differently according to the wave propagation model used to estimate the SWH. For this, Goda's original method for nonlinear irregular wave deformation is extended to produce values for linear shoaling. Finally, exemplary calculations are performed to assess the possible errors caused by a misuse of the wave height calculation procedure. The relative errors with respect to the correct values could exceed 20%, potentially leading to a significant under-design of coastal or harbor structures in some cases.

  • A two-stage selection procedure is considered in the case of exponential populations with common known scale parameter. The proposed procedure is designed following the lines of Tamhane and Bechhofer(1977). The design constants to implement the procedure are provided. Monte Carlo results show that the proposed procedure performs better than the single procedure by Raghvachari and Starr (1970) in terms of the expected total sample size.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop a procedure and a system for the design of manufacturing cells. First, a procedure is developed to create machine cells, to identify part families and to allocate part families to machine cells so that the intercellular movement of part is minimized. Next, a system for solving this procedure is developed and an application example is demonstrated.
