  • AFDA (Approximate Full Distribution Approach) model of FORM (First-Order Reliability Model) which can quantitatively calculate the probability that storm sewer reach to performance limit state was developed in this study. It was defined as a failure if amount of inflow exceed the capacity of storm sewer. Manning's equation and rational equation were used to determine the capacity and inflow of reliability function. Furthermore, statistical characteristics and distribution for the random variables were analyzed as a reliability analysis. It was found that the statistical distribution for annual maximum rainfall intensity of 10 cities in Korea is matched well with Gumbel distribution. Reliability model developed in this study was applied to Y shaped storm sewer system to calculate the probability that storm sewer may exceed the performance limit state. Probability of failure according to diameter was calculated using Manning's equation. Especially, probability of failure of storm sewer in Mungyeong and Daejeon was calculated using rainfall intensity of 50-year return period. It was found that probability of failure can be significantly increased if diameter is decreased below the original diameter. Therefore, cleaning the debris in sewer pipes to maintain the original pipe diameter should be one of the best ways to reduce the probability of failure of storm sewer. In sewer system, two sewer pipes can flow into one sewer pipe. For this case, probability of system failure was calculated using multiple failure mode. Reliability model developed in this study can be applied to design, maintenance, management, and control of storm sewer system.

  • If sewage flows for an extended time at low velocities, solids may be deposited in the sewer. Sufficient velocity or tractive force should be developed regularly to flush out any solids that may have been deposited during low flow periods. This study aims to evaluate the periods (T) during which sewage flow greater than the minimum tractive force maintains on a spot in sewer pipe system with lower tractive force or lower velocity than expected in the design step, when a storage tank installed in a place upsteam pours water into the sewer. The effect to T of design factors of storage tank and sewer pipes was evaluated assuming the uniform flow in sewers. When the area of orifice in the storage tank is $0.062m^2$(or 0.28 m diameter), the maximum T of 31sec was maintained using the usually used preset range of values of several design factors. As the horizontal cross section of storage tank and water depth of storage tank and roughness in sewers increase, T linearly increases. Also, T linearly decreases as the diameter of a sewer pipe increases. Although T gradually decreases as the sewer pipe slope decreases to around 0.005, T decreases sharply when the slope is less than 0.003.

  • Risk, probability of failure, which includes various uncertainties and influential factors of performance should be accounted for in engineering system. Recently, several different methods to analysis risk evaluation evolved and one of the practical method is FOSM (First Order Second Moment Method ). FOSM method is derived in terms of terms coefficient of variance to uncertainties which influence various factor. For risk evaluation and uncertainty analysis in hydraulic design system, load-capacity relationship is adopted in this paper. Sample catchment with design of sewer system is applied, which plots safety factor vs. risk. Risk evaluation and uncertainty analysis are very to important develop optimal design model in hydraulic system

  • A combined sewer system can quickly drain both storm water and sewage, improve the living environment and resolve flood measures. A combined sewer system is much superior to separate sewer system in reduction of the non-point source pollutant load. However, during rainfall. it is impossible in time, space and economic terms to cope with the entire volume of storm water. A sewage system that exceeds the capacity of the sewer facilities drain into the river mixed with storm-water. In addition, high concentration of CSOs by first-flush increase pollution load and reduce treatment efficiency in sewage treatment plant. The aim of this study was to develope a processing unit for the removal of high CSOs concentrations in relation to water quality during rainfall events in a combined sewer. The most suitable operational design for processing facilities under various conditions was also determined. With a designed discharge of 19.89 m/min, the removal efficiency was good, without excessive overflow, but it was less effective in relation to underflow, and decreased with decreasing particle size and specific gravity. It was necessary to lessen radius of vortex separator for increasing inlet velocity in optimum range for efficient performance, and removal efficiency was considered to high because of rotation increases through enlargement of comparing height of vortex separator in diameter. By distribution of influent particle size, the actual turbulent flow and experimental results was a little different from the theoretical removal efficiency due to turbulent effect in device.

  • The objective of this research is to develop a least cost system design method for branched storm sewer systems while satisfying all the design constraints using heuristic techniques such as genetic algorithm and harmony search. Two sewer system models have been developed in this study. The SEWERGA and SEWERHS both determine the optimal discrete pipe installation depths as decision variables. Two models also determine the optimal diameter of sewer pipes using the discrete installation depths of the pipes while satisfying the discharge and velocity requirement constraints at each pipe. Two models are applied to the example that was originally solved by Mays and Yen (1975) using their dynamic programming(DP). The optimal costs obtained from SEWERGA and SEWERHS are about 4% lower than that of the DP approach.

  • In 2009 the Korea Ministry of Environment announced 'A Comprehensive Plan for the Improvement of Sewer Service in Rural Area' aiming at reduction of the sewer service gap between urban and rural areas as well as improvement in the residential environment of the rural area. According to the plan, the sewer system supply rate for the rural area is expected to reach up to 75% until 2015 with the budget of 4.7 trillion won (Korean currency). It is not certain, however, that the increase in the sewer system supply rate will accompany improvement of water quality in receiving water because several veiled problems that can occur in small-scale sewer treatment plants are poorly addressed in the plan. In this study, those issues for the small-scale sewer treatment plants and their solutions were discussed based on a case study in which we investigated 19 treatment facilities at two rural regions in Gyeonggi province. This study also included strategies useful for the plan. From the results of investigation, some problems, e.g., high hourly variations but low in flowrates and low mass loading were commonly identified. Although operation parameters in sewer treatment plants require to be modified depending on the mass loading, most of the plants were operated with the initial design parameters which causes the decrease of removal efficiency. In the intensive diagnosis, we arranged and applied solutions (e.g., flow equalization, air on/off time control, etc) to the two selected plants and found out improvement of effluent water quality, especially organic matters (COD and SS) and T-N with better denitrification performance.

  • In this study, statistical analysis under both stationary and non-stationary climate was conducted for rainfall data measured in Seoul. Generalised Extreme Value (GEV) distribution and Gumbel distribution were used for the analysis. Rainfall changes under the non-stationary climate were estimated by applying time variable (t) to location parameter (${\xi}$). Rainfall depths calculated in non-stationary climate increased by 1.1 to 6.2mm and 1.0 to 4.6mm for the GEV distribution and gumbel distribution respectively from those stationary forms. Changes in annual maximum rainfall were estimated with rate of change in the location parameter (${\xi}1{\cdot}t$), and temporal changes of return period were predicted. This was also available for re-evaluating the current sewer design return period. Design criteria of sewer system was newly suggested considering life expectance of the system as well as temporal changes in the return period.

  • In this study, we developed a modular rainwater infiltration system that can be applied for general purposes in urban areas to prepare for localized heavy rain caused by climatic change. This study also analyzed the system's effects on reducing runoff. An analysis of the system's effects on reducing runoff based on rainfall data and monitoring data obtained between September 2012 and December 2013 after the system was installed showed that approximately 20~22% of the runoff overflowed from the infiltration facility. Also, an analysis of the runoff that occurred during the monsoon season showed that 25% of the runoff overflowed through the storm sewer system of the urban area. These results show that the rainwater overflows after infiltrating the detention facility installed in the area during high-intensity rainfall of 100mm or higher or when precipitation is 100mm for 3~4 days without the prior rainfall. According to precipitation forecasts, torrential rainfall is becoming increasingly prevalent in Korea which is increasing the risk of floods. Therefore, the standards for storm sewer systems should be raised when planning and redeveloping urban areas, and not only should centralized facilities including sewer systems and rainwater pump facilities be increased, but a comprehensive plan should also be established for the water cycle of urban areas. This study indicates that decentralized rainwater management can be effective in an urban area and also indicates that the extended application of rainwater infiltration systems can offer eco-friendly urban development.

  • Urban Storm Sewer Optimal Design Model(USSOD) was developed to compute pipe capacity, pipe slope, crown elevation, excavation depth, risk and return cost in the condition of design discharge. Rational formula is adopted for design discharge and Manning's formula is used for pipe capacity. Discrete differential dynamic programming(DDDP) technique which is a kind of dynamic programming (DP) is used for optimization and first order second moment approximation method and uncertainty analysis is also for developing model. USSOD is applied to hypothetical drainage basin to test and verify. After testing the model, it is also applied to Ulsan drainage basin which was developed by Korea Land Cooperation(KOLAND). Comparing the design results of USSOD with those of KOLAND, discharge capacity 0.35 $m^3/sec$, the crown elevation is 0.77m higher and return cost is $9\%$ less than design results of KOLAND, which verify the improvement of USSOD. Layout design model using GIS and optimization including detention or retention effect are needed in the future study.

  • Cured-in-place-pipe(CIPP) is the most adopted trenchless application for sewer rehabilitation to extend the life of the existing sewer without compromising both direct construction and indirect social costs especially applied in the congested urban area. This technology is globally and domestically known to be the most suitable for partial and full deteriorated pipe structure rehabilitation in a sewer system. The typical design of CIPP requires a significant thickness of lining to support loading causing sewage flow interruption and increasing material cost. This paper presents development of a high strength glass fiber composite lining material for the CIPP application and structural test results. The test results exhibit that the new glass fiber composite lining material has 12 times of flexural strength, 6.2 times of flexural modulus, and 0.5 Creep Retention Factor. These test results can reduce lining design thickness 35% at minimum. Even though taking into consideration extra materials such as outer and inner films for actual field applications, the structural capacity of the composite material significantly increases and it reduces 20 percent or more line thickness as compared to the conventional CIPP. We expect that the newly developed CIPP lining material lowers material costs and minimizes flow capacity reduction, and fully replaceable to the conventional CIPP lining materials.
