The downdrag on a single pile and on pile groups was examined by using a numerical analysis and an analytical study. The overall objective of the present study was given to the magnitude and distribution of the downdrag forces on piles within a group. The case of the single pile was analyzed by developing a closed form solution. Subsequently the response of groups was investigated by using a detailed numerical approach. Based on the results, it is found that the downdrag load of piles in a group is much smaller than that of a single pile. Also, a simple method is proposed to design groups of 9 to 25 piles with spacing-to-diameter ratios varying from 2.5 to 5.0 for downdrag loads.
Modeling techniques of piled pier were reviewed and the influences of pile cap's boundary conditions were analyzed in this study. The method using flexible springs seems to be useful fur the practical design since its simplified model can represent the complex behaviors of pile groups efficiently. Parameter studies were performed far various pile group arrangements, pile spacings, end bearing conditions, and loading stages to analyze their effects on the lateral displacements, maximum pile bending stresses, and lateral stiffness of pile groups. Through the parameter studies, it was found that when lateral stiffness of pile groups was estimated by using three-dimensional analysis method (YSGroup), its complex behavior could be predicted better than other methods based on single pile analysis.
Dynamic interaction of the ground-foundation-structure must be considered for safety of earthquake resistant design for piles supported structures. The p-y curve, which is proposed in the static load and cyclic load cases, is used for the earthquake resistant design of piles. The p-y curve does not consider dynamic interaction of the ground-foundation-structure on dynamic load cases such as earthquake. Therefore, it is difficult to apply the p-y curve to earthquake resistant design. The dynamic p-y curve by considering dynamic interaction of the ground-foundation-structure has been studied, and researches had same conditions that pile caps were on the ground surface and superstructures were added on pile caps for the simple weight. However, group piles are normally embedded into the ground except for marine structures, so it seems that the embedding the pile cap influences on the dynamic p-y curve of group piles. In this study, the shaking table model test was conducted to confirm dynamic behavior of group piles by the embedded pile cap in the ground. The result showed that dynamic behavior was different between two cases by embedding the pile cap or not.

It had found that, as a result of cross-hole tonic logging test, concrete was not filled partially within the bottom 2.0 m of the large diameter (Ø= 2,500mm) rock socketed pile, MP20-P11(socket diameter (Ø= 2,200mm), which was a pile among piles group supporting a pier of Kwangan Grand Bridge. The pile was repaired by the combined cement grout injected through the pipes for the cross-hole sonic logging test and the bore holes for core samples. A month after the cement grouting, repairing was checked by coring and cross-hole sonic logging then 3 times of grouting and 2 times of coring were, in turns, peformed, then repairing was completed successfully. The vertical compressive capacity of the repaired large diameter socketed pile was evaluated by several formulas and software ROCKET, and was more conservative than design load (1,882 ton) of MP20-P11. It is expected that, in the case of the battered socketed piles, it could be more reasonable to analyze the behaviors of a battered pile using 3-D model. A 3-D analysis will be peformed in the future study.
The root pile system is insitu soil reinforcement technique that uses a series of reticulately installed micropiles. In terms of mechanical improvement by means of grouted reinform ming elements, the root pile system is similar to the soil nailing system. The main difference between root piles and soil nailing are due to the fact that the reinforcing bars in root piles are normally grouted under high pressure and that the alignments of the reinforcing members differ. Recently, the root pile system has been broadly used to stabilize slopes and retain excavations. The accurate design of the root pile system is, however, a very difficult tass owing to geometric variety and statical indetermination, and to the difficulty in the soilfiles interaction analysis. As a result, moat of the current design methods have been heavily dependent on the experiences and approximate approach. This paper proposes a quasi-three dimensional method of analysis for the root pile system applied to the stabilization of slopes. The proposed methods of analysis include i) a technique to estimate the change in borehole radium as a function of the grout pressure as well as a function of the time when the grout pressure is applied, ii) a technique to evaluate quasi -three dimensional limit-equilibrium stability for sliding, iii) a technique to predict the stability with respect to plastic deformation of the soil between adjacent root piles, and iv) a quasi -three dimensional finite element technique to compute stresses and dis placements of the root pile structure barred on the generalized plane strain condition and composite unit cell concept talon형 with considerations of the group effect and knot effect. By using the proposed technique to estimate the change in borehole radius as a function of the grout pressure as well as a function of the time, the estimations are made and compar ed with the Kleyner 8l Krizek's experimental test results. Also by using the proposed quasi-three dimensional analytical method, analyses have been performed with the aim of pointing out the effects of various factors on the interaction behaviors of the root pile system.
In the present study, more systematic laboratory model tests under various conditions are carried out to investigate load-sharing characteristics among the granular pile and adjacent soils and bearing capacity characteristics with different pile lengths. Further to evaluate effects of both a loading area and a spacing of pile installation on the bearing capacity and bearing capacity characteristics of each pile in group, model test results are also analyzed for the purpose of an efficient design of granular compaction piles. From the analysis of the model test results, it is found that the ultimate capacity of granular compaction group piles increases with a decrease in the installation distance among granular piles. It is also found that the dominant failure mode of the granular compaction piles is bulging failure. It is further realized that the length of a granular pile could not significantly affect on the ultimate granular pile capacity.

As part of study to develop LRFD (Load and Resistance Factor Design) codes for foundation structures in Korea, resistance factors for static bearing capacity of driven steel pipe piles were calibrated in the framework of reliability theory. The 57 data sets of static load tests and soil property tests conducted in the whole domestic area were collected and these load test piles were sorted into two cases: SPT N at pile tip less than 50, SPT N at pile tip equal to or more than 50. The static bearing capacity formula and the Meyerhof method using N values were applied to calculate the expected design bearing capacities of the piles. The resistance bias factors were evaluated for the two static design methods by comparing the representative measured bearing capacities with the expected design values. Reliability analysis was performed by two types of advanced methods: the First Order Reliability Method (FORM), and the Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) method using resistance bias factor statistics. The target reliability indices are selected as 2.0 and 2.33 for group pile case and 2.5 for single pile case, in consideration of the reliability level of the current design practice, redundancy of pile group, acceptable risk level, construction quality control, and significance of individual structure. Resistance factors of driven steel pipe piles were recommended based on the results derived from the First Order Reliability Method and the Monte Carlo Simulation method.

Since the composite ground design method is easy to apply for calculation or numerical analysis, it is applied to the design of cement mixing methods. However, the comparison studies between analysis and actual results such as a trial test and construction for the cement mixing method are few because the composite ground design method was developed for the compaction pile (SCP, GCP) methods. In this study, the results of various analysis methods, such as the composite ground analysis method (1 case) and the individual pile method (3 cases), were compared with actual measurements through a two-dimensional finite element numerical analysis. In case of the surface settlements, the results of study show that the individual plate method was larger than the actual measurements, while other methods are similar. The settlements at the under ground of the improved area is overestimated in all analysis methods. When comparing numerical analysis results for the horizontal displacement, and ground reaction forces, the individual pile method in equivalent wall concept was found to be the most similar to the measurements. The composite ground method was not able to predict the behavior of stress transfer (Arching effect) and it turned out that the prediction of horizontal displacement was too large.
This paper describes a simplified design method of stabilizing piles based on an experimental tests and an analytical study which can take into account the safety factor of slope and pile spacing. The nonlinear characteristics of the soil-pile interaction for stabilizing piles are modeled by using load transfer method. The interaction factors due to pile spacing and cap rigidity were estimated by using a three dimensional nonlinear finite element approach and laboratory tests. Based on the results obtained, the interaction factors are proposed quantitatively for one-row pile groups with spacing-to-diameter ratios varying far 2.5 to 7.0. The Bishop's simplified method of slope stability analysis is extended to incorporate the soil-pile interaction and determine the safety factor of the reinforced slope. Through the comparative study, it is found that the prediction by present approach is in relatively good agreement with the results of centrifuge tests and field tests and three dimensional finite element analyses.
In the design for piled rafts, the load capacity of the raft is in general ignored and the load capacities of pile are only considered for the estimation of the total load carrying capacity of the piled raft. The axial resistance of piled raft is offered by the raft and group piles acting on the same supporting ground soils. As a consequence, pile - soil - raft and pile - soil interactions, occurring by stress and displacement duplication with pile and raft loading conditions, acts as a key element in the design for piled rafts. In this study, a series of centrifuge model tests has been performed to compare the axial behavior of group pile and raft with that of a piled raft (having 16 component piles with an array of $4{\times}4$) at the stiff and soft clays. From the test results, it is observed that the interactions of piles, soil, and raft has little influences on the load capacities of piles and raft in piled rafts compared with the load capacities of group piles and raft at the same clay soil condition.
