  • In structural design procedure, The procedure of member selection manages complex data relationship and reflects structural expert's knowledge. It is a difficult problem to construct an effective system with the conventional l programming technique. Knowledge_based s!'stem is a software system capable of supporting the explicit representation of expert's knowledge in member selection process through member data and reasoning mechanisms. This study describes useful methodology for structuring knowledge and representing relation between member data and knowledge. And this study shows the application of this member for member selection in the steel structural design.

  • A design for the front section of an excavator requires kinematic and kinetic mechanism consideration for several configurations. Key parameters for an appropriate configuration can be obtained through a mechanical verification and numerical formulation with a design expert's know-how. In this paper, we propose a knowledge-based system with an expert-shell(CATIA) and Visual Basic to assist for the design of the front section of an excavator. The designers can achieve more efficient design through a CAD model, implemented design knowledge, and a user friendly interface. The implemented design knowledge is retrieved through the whole design process from an early design stage to a detailed design stage based on the multiple levels of abstraction scheme.

  • The configuration design of a mechanical product can be efficiently performed when it is based on the functional modeling. There are methodologies, which decompose function from the abstract level to the concrete level and match the functions to physical parts. But it is difficult to carry out an innovative design when the function is matched only to a pre-detined part. This paper describes the configuration design process of a mechanical product with a design expert system, which uses function taxonomy and TRIZ theory. The expert system can propose a functional modeling of a new part. which is not in the existing parts list. The abstraction levels of design knowledge are introduced, which describe the operation of mechanical product in the levels of abstraction. This is the theoretical background of using knowledge of function and TRIZ for configuration design. The expert system is adequate to control this design knowledge. which expresses knowledge of functional modeling, mapping rules between functions and parts, selection of parts, and TRIZ theory. The hierarchy of functions and machine parts are properly expressed by classes and objects in the expert system. A design expert system has been implemented for the configuration design of a train bogie, and a new brake system of the bogie is introduced with the aid of TRIZ's 30 function groups.

  • 디자인 지식의 습득, 저장, 검색 및 응용과 같은 컴퓨터를 이용한 디자인 과정에 있어서, 창조적이며 디자인 요구에 적당한 결과물을 생산하는데 필요한 디자인 지식을 인지하고 습득하는 과정은 매우 중요하다 하겠다. 특히 인간의 인지능력과 유사한 기능을 같고 중요한 형태 디자인 지식을 습득하는 것은 필수적이다. 형태의 물리적인 속성에 의하여 인지되는 1차원적인 형태 지식이 아닌, 이들로부터 형성되는 2차원 또는 그 이상의 차원에서 인지되는 형태 디자인 지식을 인지해야만 한다. 지식의 인지 및 습득은 기억 장치에 저장되어 있는 지식과 인지되는 지식을 비교하여 동일하거나 유사한 경우 그 디자인 지식이 습득된다. 이때 1차원적인 디자인 지식은 형판 매칭과 속성 매칭에 의하여 그 유사성이 쉽게 인지되지만, 2차원 이상의 디자인 지식에 대해서는 인간은 쉽게 인지하나 컴퓨터를 이용한 인지에는 어려움이 많다. 본 연구는 컴퓨터에 이러한 능력을 부여하기 위하여 형태패턴 표현을 이용한 형태의 유사성을 판별하는 방법에 대하여 설명하였다.

  • A knowledge-based system with CAD is widely used to implement a designer's know-how and a routine calculation within a system. An engineer needs to change several design parameters in an early design stage. However it is not easy to change the design parameters when it needs to update an existing model and data. In this paper, a module has been proposed to make it easy to change the design parameter so that the engineer can easily update and change the design model. Also a flexible interface of the module can easily add or extract the design knowledge.

  • 오늘날과 같은 지식정보화 시대에는 자료 및 정보에서 창출된 지식을 어떻게 경영하고 관리하느냐에 의해 개인, 기업, 국가의 경쟁력이 평가된다고 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다. 지식경영 의 중요성 및 필요성이 부각되면서 디자인분야에서도 디자인 관련 지식을 창출하고 적용한 후 그 효용가치를 평가하려는 연구가 이루어져 왔다. 이들 선행연구들은 지식창출을 위해 이용되는 기초자료가 무엇이냐에 따라 CRM분야와 온라인 통계 조사분야 그리고 eCRM 분야로 구분할 수 있다. 그러나 이들 연구에서는 개별분야에서의 지식을 창출할 수 있다는 측면에서는 의미가 있지만 디자이너가 실무에 직접적으로 적용 할 수 있는 디자인 지식을 창출할 수 있다고 하기에는 다소 무리가 따른다. 왜냐하면 디자인관련 고객은 CRM분야의 기존 오프라인에서의 고객의 선호행위, 통계조사부분의 각종 디자인 요소에 대한 통계적 설문조사 결과 그리고 eCRM분야의 시공을 초월한 불특정 다수의 소비행태 및 선호패턴에 이르기까지 통합적인 형태의 지식이 요구되기 때문이다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해 CRM, 통계조사, eCRM부분을 통합적으로 적용한 웹기반의 디자인 지식관리 솔루션을 제안하였다. 솔루션에서 제공되는 다양한 정보는 디자인관련 기업과 연구소 등의 실무 디자이너에게 고객위주 디자인을 생성하는데 필요한 잠재적 지식을 창출하는데 많은 도움을 줄 것으로 기대된다.

  • Conventional computer programs developed and used by practicing engineers can be considered to contain expert knowledge and design experience. If these conventional programs are converted into expert systems, the difficult and time consuming process of knowledge acquisition can be simplified. Also the constructed knowledge-base can have higher confidence level than that constructed by the usual knowledge acquisition method of interviews. An existing computer program which is being used by ship structural designers has been reformulated as a design expert system by applying an expert system development shell-Nexpert. Utilizing the callable interface provided by the development shell, external design tools have also been integrated. The interfaced external functions are a graphical user interface (GUI) for the design process control, and graphics functions for the visualization of design results. It is observed that the developed system for design support is useful in two aspects. The trace-back function shows what portion of design rules are applied in arriving at certain design decisions. Also the knowledge-base can be conveniently updated as design rules of the classification societies are updated.

A Quest of Design Principles of Cognitive Artifacts through Case Analysis in e-Learning: A Learner-Centered Perspective

  • Learners are often posited in a paradoxical situation where they are not fully involved in decision making processes on how to learn, in designing their tools. Cognitive artifacts in e-learning are supposed to effectively support learner-centered e-learning. The purpose of the study is to analyze cases of cognitive artifacts and to inquire those design principles for facilitating the learner-centered e-learning. Four research questions are suggested: First, it will be analyzed the characteristics of learners with respect to design of cognitive artifacts for supporting the learner-centered e-learning. Second, characteristics of four cases to design cognitive artifacts in learner-centered e-learning environment are analyzed. Third, it will be suggested the appropriate design principles of cognitive artifacts to facilitating learner-centered learning in e-learning environment. Four cases of cognitive artifacts design in learner-centered e-learning was identified as follows: Wiki software as cognitive artifacts in computer-supported collaborative learning; 'Play Around Network (PAN)' as cognitive artifact to monitor learning activities in knowledge community; Knowledge Forum System (KFS) as a cognitive artifact in knowledge building; cognitive artifacts in Courses-as-seeds applied meta-design. Five design principles are concluded as follows: Promoting externalization of cognitive artifacts to private media; Helping learners to initiate their learning processes; Encouraging learners to make connections with other learners' knowledge building and their cognitive artifacts; Promoting monitoring of participants' contributions in collaborative knowledge building; Supporting learners to design their cognitive artifacts.

패션디자이너 직무수행을 위해 필요한 지식수준에 관한 연구 - 한국과 미국을 중심으로 - (The Level of Knowledge Required to Fulfill the Task of Fashion Design -A Cross-cultural Study between South Korea and the United States -)

  • Employees overseas have a need to prepare according to the different environments and industrial structures between countries. Therefore, to investigate qualities for fashion designers to possess when they work abroad, especially in the United States, this study compared the level of knowledge required to fulfill the work of fashion design in both South Korea and the United States. Responses from workers who are engaged to fashion design from the representative online career information systems of two countries, 'Worknet' in South Korea and '$O^*Net$' in the United States, were used as data. Looking at the result derived from the analysis of this study, first by comparing various statistical indicators, results showed the difference between knowledge level required to fashion designer in South Korea and in the United States. Even with the same type of job, because environments and industrial structures of each country are dissimilar, a different level of knowledge will be required in order to perform their tasks. Second, fashion designers in both South Korea and the United States required a high level of knowledge in the 'fine arts', 'administration and management', 'production and processing', and 'design' to perform their duties as a fashion designer. As a result, both countries have similarities that fashion designers need to possess a high level of the knowledge in areas such as 'production of products' as well as 'sales of products'. Furthermore, human relationship field of knowledge such as 'counseling', 'psychology', and 'communication' appeared to be more necessary to fashion designers in South Korea than those in the United States. On the other hand, higher degree of knowledge of 'machines and tools', ' fine arts', and 'transportation' appeared to be more necessary to fashion designers in the United States than those in South Korea.
