A methodology to evaluate the seismic performance of interface piping systems that cross the isolation interface in the seismically isolated nuclear power plant (NPP) was developed. The developed methodology was applied to the safety-related interface piping system to demonstrate the seismic performance of the target piping system. Not only the seismic performance for the design level earthquakes but also the performance for the beyond design level earthquakes were evaluated. Two artificial seismic ground input motions which were matched to the design response spectra and two historical earthquake ground motions were used for the seismic analysis of piping system. The preliminary performance evaluation results show that the excessive relative displacements can occur in the seismically isolated piping system. If the input ground motion contained relatively high energy in the low frequency region, we could find that the stress response of the piping system exceed the allowable stress level even though the intensity of the input ground motion is equal to the design level earthquake. The structural responses and seismic performances of piping system were varied sensitively with respect to the intensities and frequency contents of input ground motions. Therefore, for the application of isolation system to NPPs and the verification of the safety of piping system, the seismic performance of the piping system subjected to the earthquake at the target NPP site should be evaluated firstly.

In the nonlinear response history analysis of building structures, the input ground accelerations have considerable effect on the nonlinear response characteristics of structural systems. As the properties of the ground motion, using time history analysis, are interrelated with many factors such as the fault mechanism, the seismic wave propagation from source to site, and the amplification characteristics of the soil, it is difficult to properly select the input ground motions for seismic response analysis. In this paper, the most unfavourable real seismic design ground motions were selected as input motions. The artificial earthquake waves were generated according to these earthquake events. The artificial waves have identical phase angles to the recorded earthquake waves, and their overall response spectra are compatible with the seismic design spectrum with 5% of critical viscous damping. It is concluded that the artificial earthquake waves simulated in this paper are applicable as input ground motions for a seismic response analysis of building structures.

This paper addresses a fundamental study that is necessary to complement and improve the current domestic design specifications for the strong motion duration criterion and the envelope function of artificial accelerograms that can be applied to the earthquake-proof design of nuclear structures. The criteria for the design response spectra and strong motion duration suggested by USNRC and ASCE Standard 4-98 are commonly being used in the profession, and they are first compared with each other and reviewed. By applying 209 real strong earthquake records that are greater than 5 in magnitude at rock sites to the strong motion duration criterion in ASCE 4-98, an empirical regression model that predicts the strong motion duration as a function of the earthquake magnitude was then developed. Using synthetically generated earthquake time histories for the 10 cases whose strong motion durations varied from 6 to 20 seconds, extensive seismic analyses were finally conducted to identify the effects of the strong motion durations on the seismic responses of the nuclear power plant containment structures.

Soil-foundation-structure interaction (SFSI) is one of the important issues in the seismic design for evaluating the exact behavior of the system. A seismic design of a structure can be more precise and economical, provided that the effect of SFSI is properly taken into account. In this study, a series of the dynamic centrifuge tests were performed to compare the seismic response of the single degree of freedom(SDOF) structure on the various types of the foundation. The shallow and pile foundations were made up of diverse mass and different conjunctive condition, respectively. The test specimen consisted of dry sand deposit, foundation, and SDOF structure in a centrifuge box. Several types of earthquake motions were sequentially applied to the test specimen from weak to strong intensity of them, which is known as a stage test. Results from the centrifuge tests showed that the seismic responses of the SDOF structure on the shallow foundation and disconnected pile foundation decreased by the foundation rocking. On the other hand, those on the connected pile foundation gradually increased with intensity of input motion. The allowable displacement of the foundation under the strong earthquake, the shallow and the disconnected pile foundation, have an advantage in dissipating the earthquake energy for the seismic design.

The design earthquake used for the seismic analysis and design of NPP (Nuclear Power Plant) is determined by the deterministic or probabilistic methods. The probabilistic seismic hazard analysis(PSHA) for the nuclear power plant sites was performed for the probabilistic seismic risk assessment. The probabilistic seismic hazard analysis for the nuclear power plant site had been completed as a part of the probabilistic seismic risk assessment. The probabilistic method become a resonable method to determine the design earthquakes for NPPs. In this study, the defining method of the probability based scenario earthquake was established, and as a sample calculation, the probability based scenario earthquakes were estimated by the de-aggregation of the probabilistic seismic hazard. By using this method, it is possible to define the probability based scenario earthquakes for the seismic design and seismic safety evaluation of structures. It is necessary to develop the rational seismic source map and the attenuation equations for the development of reasonable scenario earthquakes.

The development history of seismic design and analysis methods considering seismic force in soil-structure dynamic interaction are presented. Determination of seismic intensity in static analysis of both seismic and modifided seismic methods is discussed and preferable method in future seismic design is proposed.
In most current seismic design codes, design earthquake ground motions are defined by a reference spectrum, based on bedrock and site amplification factors that quantify the geotechnical dynamic conditions. Earthquake engineering bedrock is the fundamental geotechnical formation where the seismic waves are attenuated without amplification. To better define bedrock in an earthquake engineering context, shear wave velocity ($V_S$ ) data obtained from in-situ seismic tests were examined for several rock strata in Korea; these data were categorized by borehole drilling investigations. The $V_S$ values for most soft rock data in Korea are > 750 m/s, which is the threshold $V_S$ value for identifying engineering bedrock from a strong motion station. Conversely, VS values are < 750 m/s for 60% of $V_S$ data in weathered rock in Korea. Thus, the soft (or harder) rock strata below the weathered rock layer in Korea can be regarded as earthquake engineering bedrock.

Post-earthquake fire (PEF) can lead to a rapid collapse of buildings that have been partially damaged as a result of a prior earthquake. Almost all standards and codes for the design of structures against earthquake ignore the risk of PEF, and thus buildings designed using those codes could be too weak when subjected to a fire after an earthquake. An investigation based on sequential analysis inspired by FEMA356 is performed here on the immediate occupancy (IO), life safety (LS) and collapse prevention (CP) performance levels of two portal frames, after they are pushed to arrive at a certain level of displacement corresponding to the mentioned performance level. This investigation is followed by a fire analysis of the damaged frames, examining the time taken for the damaged frames to collapse. As a point of reference, a fire analysis is also performed for undamaged frames and before the occurrence of earthquake. The results indicate that while there is minor difference between the fire resistances of the fire-alone situation and the frames pushed to the IO level of performance, a notable difference is observed between the fire-alone analysis and the frames pushed to arrive at LS and CP levels of performance and exposed to PEF. The results also show that exposing only the beams to fire results in a higher decline of the fire resistance, compared to exposing only the columns to fire. Furthermore, the results show that the frames pushed to arrive at LS and CP levels of performance collapse in a global collapse mode laterally, whereas at the IO level of performance and fire-alone situation, the collapse mechanism is mostly local through the collapse of beams. Whilst the investigation is conducted for a certain class of portal frames, the results confirm the need for the incorporation of PEF into the process of analysis and design, and provide some quantitative measures on the level of associated effects.

The interest on the potential earthquake magnitude and the request on the earthquake-resistant design examination for coastal structures are emerged because of the recently occurred magnitude 5.8 earthquake in Gyeoung-Ju, Korea. In this study, the magnitude and its confidence intervals with the return periods are estimated using the KMA earthquake magnitude data (over 3.5 and 4.0 in magnitude) by the non-parametric extreme value analysis. In case of using the "over 4.0" data set, the estimated magnitudes on the 50- and 100-years return periods are 5.81 and 5.94, respectively. Their 90% confidence intervals are estimated to be 5.52-6.11, 5.62-6.29, respectively. Even though the estimated magnitudes have limitations not considering the spatial distribution, it can be used to check the stability of the diverse coastal structures in the perspective of the life design because the potential magnitude and its confidence intervals in Korea are estimated based on the available 38-years data by the extreme value analysis.

For the seismic performance enhancement of residential flat plate structure and for the selection of earthquake records, the possibility of base isolation is evaluated and the time history results are reviewed. By evaluating a base isolated stiffness, a target period, and an envelope curve analysis, seismic performance of structure, which has strong rotational mode, is evaluated. For the propriety evaluation of earthquake records usage and scaling method, time history analysis is done with variables such as DBE(design base earthquake) level, MCE(maximum considerable earthquake) level, and 1.4DBE level. From the analysis results, following conclusions can be made; the earthquake records, which are used in base isolation analysis, should be selected by similar soil type which the structure is considered, and should be intensity scaled in a range of mean ${\pm}$ standard deviation of code based design response spectrum.
