  • A quick-acting hydraulic fuse, which is mainly composed of a poppet, a seat, and a spring, must be designed to minimize the leaked oil volume during fuse operation on a line rupture. The optimal design parameters of a quick-acting hydraulic fuse were searched using the design of experiments method and the complex method. First, the $L_{50}(5^4)$ orthogonal array is used to find the robust minimum point among the 625 points of design variables. The search range can then be narrowed around the robust minimum point. Second, the $L_{25}(5^4)$ orthogonal array is used to obtain the variations of the design variables in the narrowed search range. The variations of design variables are used to set the structure of a polynomial equation representing the leakage oil volume of the quick-acting hydraulic fuse. The least squares method is then applied to obtain the coefficients of polynomial equation. Finally, the complex method is used to find the optimal design parameters where the objective function is described by the polynomial equation.

  • This study introduces the Reliability-Based Design Optimization (RBDO) to enhance the kinematic and compliance (K & C) characteristics of automotive suspension system. In previous studies, the deterministic optimization has been performed to enhance the K & C characteristics. Unfortunately, uncertainties in the real world have not been considered in the deterministic optimization. In the design of suspension system, design variables with the uncertainties, such as the bushing stiffness, have a great influence on the variation of the suspension performances. There is a need to quantify these uncertainties and to apply the RBDO to obtain the design, satisfying the target reliability level. In this research, design variables including uncertainties are dealt as random variables and reliability of the suspension performances, which are related the K & C characteristics, are quantified and the RBDO is performed. The RBD-optimum is compared with the deterministic optimum to verify the enhancement in reliability. Thus, the reliability of the suspension performances is estimated and the RBD-optimum, satisfying the target reliability level, is determined.

  • This paper presents the response surface optimization method using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis to optimize the shape of a forward-curved blades centrifugal fan. For numerical analysis, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model are discretized with finite volume approximations. In order to reduce huge computing time due to a large number of blades in forward-curved blades centrifugal fan, the flow inside of the fan is regarded as steady flow by introducing the impeller force models. Three geometric variables, i.e., location of cut off, radius of cut off, and width of impeller, and one operating variable, i.e., flow rate, were selected as design variables. As a main result of the optimization, the efficiency was successfully improved. And, optimum design flow rate was found by using flow rate as one of design variables. It was found that the optimization process provides reliable design of this kind of fans with reasonable computing time.

  • This paper presents a technique to optimize the shape of waveguide components in H-plane. The technique utilizes the numerical optimization process which employs the vector finite element method. In the optimization process, the sensitivity of an objective function with respect to design variables is computed by introducting adjoint variables, which makes the computation easy. The steepest descent method is then employed to update design variables. As a numerical example, an H-plane waveguide teejunction was considered to obtain optimized shape. Comparison between the initial and optimized shape was made.

  • In this paper, observer-based H$\sub$$\infty$/ controller design method for singular systems with time-varying delay by Just one LMI condition is presented. The sufficient condition for the existence of controller and the controller design method are presented by one perfect LMI approach. The design procedure involves solving an LMI. Since the obtained condition can be expressed as an LMI form, all variables including feedback gain and observer gain can be calculated simultaneously by Schur complement and changes of variables.

  • This paper describes the optimization of design variables of SLIM using finite element method and SUMT(Sequential Unconstrained Minimization Technique). Thrust is taken as an objective function in order to maximize thrust under constant current drive, and seven independent design variables and nine constraints are chosen. As a result, $\tau$/g(pole pitch/airgap) and $\tau$/$d_{AL}$(pole pitch/aluminum depth) of good criteria in SLIM design are determined.

  • Evolutionary operation is useful to improve on-line full-scale manufacturing processes by systematically changing the levels of the process variables without jeopardizing the product. This paper presents a system design for an evolutionary operation software called 'evolutionary optimizer'. The system design is based primarily on data flow diagram. Evolutionary optimizer consists of four modules: factorial design module, many variables module, mixture Production module, and mean/dispersion module.

  • The flow rate and the noise level of 18 cross flow fans were measured to analyze the effect of design variables on these and to finally find the optimal design value. These data were analyzed by the Taguchi method and the neural network. The optimal values obtained by the neural network showed good agreements with that by the Taguchi method. The effects of eight design variables on the fan performance and the noise were evaluated and discussed.

  • In design of suspension system for KHST, it was applied the approximated optimization method using meta-models which called Response Surface Model and Neural Network Model for 29 design variables and 46 performance index. These models was coded using correlation between design variables and performance indices that is made by the 66 times iterative execution through the design of experimental table consisted orthogonal array L32 and D-Optimal design table. The results show that the optimization process is very efficient and simply applicable for complex mechanical system such as railway vehicle system. Also it was compared with the sensitivity of some design variables in order to know the characteristics of two models. This paper describes the general method for dynamic analysis and design process of railway vehicle system applied to KHST development, and proposed the efficient methods for vibration mode analysis process dealing with test data and the function based approximation method using meta-model applicable for a complex mechanical system. This method will be able to apply to the other railway vehicle system in oder to systematize and generalize the design process of railway vehicle dynamic system.

  • An optimal design code for centrifugal pumps has been developed to determine geometric and fluid dynamic variables under appropriate design constraints. The optimization problem has been formulated with a nonlinear objective function to minimize one, two or all of the fluid dynamic losses, the net positive suction head required and the product price of a pump stage depending on the weighting factors selected as the design compromise. The optimal solution Is obtained by means of the Hooke and Jeeves direct search method. The performance analysis Is based on the mean streamline analysis using the present state-of-the-art loss correlations. The optimized efficiency and design variables of centrifugal pumps are presented in this paper as a function of non-dimensional specific speed in the range, $0.5{\leq}N$, ${\leq}1.3$. The diagrams presented herein can be used efficiently in the preliminary design phase of centrifugal pumps.
