  • In ship's structure, deck and bottom plate are main strength member subjected to the inplane load due to longitudinal bending, i.e. tensile and/or compressive load. The deck and bottom plate are subdivided into many plate members by stiffeners and girders longitudinally and transversely. Since the plate members are thin, it is likely to be collapsed under compressive load, and when we consider the local strength of deck and bottom, the plate members play an important role in the longitudinal strength. Therefore the precise analysis of their compressive ultimate strength is required for the optimal design of ship's structures. In this paper, the modified analytical method using the incremental form of principle of virtual displacement is introduced to determine the compressive ultimate load of plate members. The results by the present method is satisfactory, and the present method is more effective and economical than the finite element method.

  • The ship plating is generally subjected to combined in-plane load and lateral pressure loads. In-plane loads include axial load and edge shear, which are mainly induced by overall hull girder bending and torsion of the vessel. Lateral pressure is due to water pressure and cargo. These load components are not always applied simultaneously, but more than one can normally exist and interact. Hence, for more rational and safe design of ship structures, it is of crucial importance to bitter understand the interaction relationship of the buckling and ultimate strength for ship plating under combined loads. Actual ship plates are subjected to relatively small water pressure except for the impact load due to slamming and panting etc. The present paper describes an accurate and fast procedure for analyzing the elastic-plastic large deflection behavior up to the ultimate limit state of ship plates under combined loads. In this paper, the ultimate strength characteristics of plates under axial compressive loads and lateral pressure loads are investigated through ANSYS elastic-plastic large deflection finite element analysis with varying lateral pressure load level.

  • The allowable bearing capacity of a pile, the most important factor in stability estimation, is determined by applying safety factor to the ultimate load or yield load. There are several but contradictory methods available in current design codes to estimate the allowable bearing capacity and the safety factor. This paper analyzes load-settlement curves obtained from 19 static load tests measured from 11 sites. At all tests, the load is applied until apparent failure is observed. The validity of the ultimate and yield load estimation method and load caculated from the settlement criterion is investigated through comparison with the measured data. In addition, a new procedure to estimate allowable load and safety factor is proposed. Additional data from field static load tests, such as those incorporated in this study, are needed to more reliably apply the proposed method in design practice.

  • The concrete box girder members are extensively used as a superstructure in bridge construction. The load carrying capacity of concrete box girders in lateral direction is generally influenced by the sizes of haunch and web. The internal upper decks are restrained by the webs and exhibit strength enhancement due to the development of aching action. The current codes do not have generally consider the arching action of deck slab in the design because of complexity of the behavior. However, there are significant benefits in utilizing the effects of arching action in the design of concrete members. The main objective of this paper is to propose a rational method to predict the ultimate load of deck slab by considering various haunch sizes and web restraint effect of concrete box girder bridges. To this end, a comprehensive experimental program has been set up and seven large-scale concrete box girders have been tested. A transverse analysis model of concrete box girders with haunches is proposed and compared with test data. The results of present study indicate that the ultimate strength is significantly affected by haunch dimension. The increase of strength due to concrete arcing action is reduced with an increase of prestressing steel ratio in laterally prestressed concrete box girders and increases with a larger haunch dimension. The proposed theory allows more realistic prediction of lateral ultimate strength for rational design of actual concrete box girder bridges.

  • This paper experimentally investigated the buckling capacity of built-up steel columns mainly, Cruciform Columns (CC) and Side-to-Side (SS) columns fabricated from two Universal Beam (UB) sections. A series of nine experimental tests comprised of three UB sections, three CC sections and three SS sections with different lengths were tested to failure to measure the ultimate axial capacity of each column section. The lengths used for each category of columns were 1.8, 2.0, and 2.2 m with slenderness ratios ranging from 39-105. The measured buckling loads of the tested specimens were compared with the predicted ultimate axial capacity using Eurocode 3, AISC LRFD, and BS 5959-1. It was observed that the failure modes of the specimens included flexural buckling, local buckling and flexural-torsional buckling. The results showed that the ultimate axial capacity of the tested cruciform and side-by-side columns were higher than the code predicted design values by up to 20%, with AISC LRFD design values being the least conservative and the Eurocode 3 design values being the most conservative. This study has concluded that cruciform column and side-to-side welded flange columns using universal beam sections are efficient built-up sections that have larger ultimate axial load capacity, larger stiffness with saving in the weight of steel used compared to its equivalent universal beam counterpart.

  • An iterative numerical computational algorithm is presented to design a plate or shell element subjected to membrance and flexural forces. Based on equilibrium consideration, equation for capacity of top and bottom reinforcements in two orthogonal directions have been derived. The amount of reinforcement is determined locally, I. e., for each integration point, from the equilibrium between applied and internal forces. Three cases of design are performed for slab element (used by Marti(1987)) and shell element (used by Kirscher and Collins(1986), by Polak and Vecchio(1993)) to verify the adequacy of the present design method for reinforced concrete shells. Based on nonlinear analyses performed, the analytically calculated ultimate load exceeded the design ultimate load. This shows the adequacy of the design method present in this study at least for slab and shell element case studied. To generalize the conclusion more design-analyses should be performed with different shell configurations.

  • In this study, we constructed a database by collecting field pullout test data of the soil nailing using pressurized grouting, and suggested a method to estimate the ultimate pullout resistance using nonlinear regression analysis to overcome the problems of ultimate pullout resistance estimation using graphical methods. The load-displacement curve estimated by nonlinear regression showed a very high correlation with the field pullout test data. Estimated ultimate pullout load by nonlinear regression method was average 29% higher than estimated ultimate pullout load using previous graphical method. A sigmoidal growth model was found to be the best-fitting nonlinear regression model against rapid pullout failure. Further, an asymptotic regression model was found to be the best fit against progressive nail pullout. The unit ultimate skin friction suggested in this research reflected in the domestic geotechnical characteristics and the specifications of the pressurized grouting method. This research is expected to contribute towards establishing an independent design standard for the soil nailing by providing solutions to the problems that occur when using design charts based on foreign research.

  • Stiffened steel plates are basic structural members on the deck and bottom structure in ship, offshore. It has a number of one sided stiffeners in either one or both directions, the latter structure was called grillage structure. At the ship structural desgn stage, one of the major consideration is evaluation for ultimate strength of the hull girder. In general, it is accepted that hull girder strength can be represented by the local strength of the longitudinal stiffened panel. In case of considering hogging condition in a stormy sea, stiffened panel was acting on the bottom structure under axial compressive load induced hull girder bending moment, also simultaneously arising local bending moment induced lateral pressure load. In this paper, results of the structural analysis have been compared with another detailed FEA program and prediction from design guideline and a series analysis was conducted consideration of changing parameters for instance, analysis range, cross-section of stiffener, web height and amplitude of lateral pressure load subjected to combined load (axial compression and lateral pressure load). It has been found that finite element modeling is capable of predicting the behaviour and ultimate load capacity of a simply supported stiffened plate subjected to combined load of axial compression and lateral pressure load It is expected that these results will be used to examine the effect of interaction between lateral pressure and axial loads for the ultimate load-carrying capacity based on the Ultimate Limit State design guideline.
