  • Nuclear marine propulsion has been emerging as a next generation carbon-free power source, for which proper passive residual heat removal systems (PRHRSs) are needed for long-term safety. In particular, the characteristics of unlimited operation time and compact design are crucial in maritime applications due to the difficulties of safety aids and limited space. Accordingly, a compact and long-term-operable PRHRS has been proposed with the key design concept of using both air cooling and seawater cooling in tandem. To confirm its feasibility, this study conducted system design and a transient analysis in an accident scenario. Design results indicate that seawater cooling can considerably reduce the overall system size, and thus the compact and long-term-operable PRHRS can be realized. Regarding the transient analysis, the Multi-dimensional Analysis of Reactor Safety (MARS-KS) code was used to analyze the system behavior under a station blackout condition. Results show that the proposed design can satisfy the design requirements with a sufficient margin: the coolant temperature reached the safe shutdown condition within 36 h, and the maximum cooling rate did not exceed 40 ℃/h. Lastly, it was assessed that both air cooling and seawater cooling are necessary for achieving long-term operation and compact design.

  • One of the moot important constants to be Installed In COLSS, a monitoring system in CE typed reactors, is ROPM which would limit the operating space. This static ROPM was calculated from digital transient analysis assuming that every design basis transient was initiated from the most severe initial condition combination (LCO). Once It could be assured that core condition would not be located at none other than LCO, this static ROPM could be replaced with dynamic ROPM calculated at that condition and the dynamic ROPM would be definitely less than the static ROPM. In order to do, It must be required to calculate the transient discrete sensitivity parameters and parameters change distribution. The purpose of this report is just to propose the enlargement method for thermal margin.

  • The IEC standard for onshore or offshore wind turbines requires additional dummy simulations (at least 5 s) for the transient responses due to initial conditions. An increase in the dummy time causes a considerable increase in the computational cost considering multiple design spirals with several thousand design load analysis cases. A time of 30 s is typically used in practical simulations for a wind turbine design with a fixed platform. However, 30 s may be insufficient for floating offshore wind turbines (FOWT) because the platforms have lower natural frequencies, and the transient responses will last much longer. In this paper, an initial condition application algorithm is implemented for WindHydro, and the appropriate dummy simulation time is investigated based on a series of dynamic simulations of a FOWT. As a result, it is found that more than 300 s is required for the platform to have stationary motion after the initial transient responses for the FOWT under the conditions considered.

  • Wind turbine generators were designed on general regulations of wind condition. At real situations, it could be different from the design conditions. There are many control methods and definitions of transient region, because an efficient wind turbine generator control logic is the important matter in generator performance and annual energy production at real conditions. In this document, the power generation sensitivity for wind speed and turbulence intensities was defined to know the sensitive transient region. Wind conditions are applied for the ranges of 7~10m/s mean wind speed and 14~20% turbulence intensity. The sensibility of HR-D86 wind generator was increased in transient region(8~10m/s) on power curve diagram through a torque control to a pitch control. And then GH-bladed simulations was performed for performance analysis of the torque mode switching in transient region on 2MW direct drive wind generator(HR-D86) which is designed IEC class II for onshore. Through the sensitivity and performance analysis, the sensitivity for real wind condition could be the performance index for an wind generator. And the torque mode switching in transient region can increase the mean power generation on HR-D86 wind turbine generator.

  • Recently, noise reduction of air-conditioner is one of the important design factors for high quality product. Especially, customer complaints arise due to noise problem of the outdoor unit. After the operation of air-conditioner start, noise level of outdoor unit is increased gradually and sometimes abnormal noise occurs until it reaches steady state condition. The aim of this paper is to investigate the relation between noise of outdoor unit and thermodynamic properties of cycle at transient condition of room air-conditioner. In order to find out the noise characteristics of outdoor unit, noise and vibration measurements are carried out. Also, the thermodynamic properties of compressor and heat exchanger are measured by using temperature and pressure sensors and experimental results are discussed. Finally, we find out the relation between noise and cycle properties at starting of room air-conditioner and the improvement method to reduce noise level is proposed.

  • This study was carried out to safety evaluation, the practical application and improvement of design method of the agricultural reservoir due to raising embankments. Also, it was to compare and analyze the pore water pressure (PWP), seepage (leakage) quantity and piping phenomenon according to high water table and rapid drawdown. The seepage analysis by finite element analysis was used for steady state and transient condition. The pore water pressure distribution for steady state and transient condition showed positive(+) PWP on the upstream slope, it was gradually changed negative(-) PWP on the downstream slope. The PWP in the core ranged from 100 ~ -33 kPa, the seepage line in the incline-type core suddenly decreased towards the lower levels from the higher levels. The PWP according to rapid drawdown is remained in the vicinity of the upstream slope, therefore, it is investigated to be in an unstable state by the slope stability analysis. The PWP after raising embankments showed smaller than in the before raising embankments. It was likely to be the piping phenomenon because the gradients in the before raising embankments showed largely at downstream slope, and the stability for piping in the after raising embankments increased stable state. The seepage quantity per 1 day and the leakage per 100m for the steady state and transient condition appeared to be safe against the piping. It reduced slightly regardless of the transient condition before the raising embankments and it decreased largely about 2.4 times in the early days after the raising embankments.

  • In this paper, We discuss the directional stability of a Mini-bus with varying suspension design parameters. We analyzed the vehicle behavior during the cornering in a transient steering condition. We made a vehicle model by use of DADS, which is dynamic analysis software, in order to carry out many cases of simulation with varying design parameters. The effect of toe-geometry change to vehicle stability is evaluated by computer simulation and the actual test. In order to reduce the under steer characteristics of a mini-bus, the amount of toe geometry change should be less than current value.

  • On January 30, 2012 an auxiliary component of Byron Unit 2 was tripped on bus under voltage. The cause of the event was the failure of the C-phase insulator track for the Unit 2 station auxiliary transformer(SAT) revenue metering transformer. In addition to this event, other events have occurred at other plants resulting in an open-phase condition.[1] Therefore, Nuclear Regulatory Commission(NRC) has requested that not only nuclear power plant(NPP) operating company but also its Design Certification(DC) applicant have to prepare open-phase detecting system in their operating plants and design document. In this paper, various open-phase conditions are simulated in NPP using Electromagnetic Transient Program(EMTP) and Atpdraw, and open-phase condition detecting system is proposed for Main Transformer(MT), Unit Auxiliary Transformer(UAT) and SAT connected power line in NPP.

  • Nuclear power plants applying for the continued operation over design life are required to address the effects of reactor water environment in fatigue design requirement of the ASME Code. Reactor water environmental effects are generally evaluated by calculating fatigue correction factors on fatigue usage. This paper describes the application for pressurizer surge line of environmental fatigue correction factors and the strain rate impact in the application. From this paper, the environmental fatigue correction factors resulted from the assumption of a step change in temperature are especially compared with those calculated from the data measured during plant startup. As a conclusion of this paper, the design transient conditions applied to the fatigue design may be conservative in case of the environmental fatigue evaluation.

  • The design analysis for the ignition transient combustion characteristics of a Kick Motor igniter indicated that the initial pressure condition would delay ignition time within a range from 100 to 500 ms. In the development tests, we confirmed that the igniter could provide the acceptable energy to ignite the main propellant at ignition transient.
