  • In this study, new types of counter electrode discharge cells for PDP were designed. The counter electrode discharge cells were designed to realize long-gap discharge mode, low firing voltage and moderate conductance for evacuation and sealing process of the panel. In order to test the concept of the design, macro discharge cells were prepared and the discharge characteristics were evaluated. The results indicate that discharge behavior may be modified significantly by changing the morphology of discharge cells.

  • The vulcanization characteristics, physical and electrical properties have been measured for magnetite-loaded CM compounds containing various concentration of magnetite. Samples of the various concentration of magnetite are characterized by oscillating disk rheometer, mooney viscometer, tensometer and resistance meter. The morphology and dispersion of magnetite are analyzed by scanning electron microscope(SEM). The results obtained are as follows : 1. The CM compound without magnetite shows plain curve, while the CM compounds containing magnetite show short curves. 2. The maximum volume of magnetite is 600 phr in the CM compounds. The magnetite of 30 to 150 phr of magnetite act as reinforcement agents and the 50 phr magnetite shows maximum tensile strength. 3. The electric conductivity is mostly influenced by the conditions of temperature, compacting pressure, and magnetite orientation. Further efforts should be made to develop a new design in various electric conductivity fillers for the most efficient and applicable rubber products.

  • The purpose of this study is to show how to gain the morphology of the Hybrid Spatial Structures and to get the geometrical data such as node coordinates, member relationships and graphic images. To form spatial structures, we have developed morphological aspects of general spatial structures, programming process and techniques. Structural design has many processes. Especially, it is very important to consider the determination of structural configuration. Regular Hybrid Spatial Structures have complex configuration, so we need to make use of automated computer process to determine structural shape in Hybrid Spatial Structures. We have applied morphological aspects to double layer plate, single layer dome, double layer dome and tensegrity structure.

  • Next generation displays such as high performance LCD, AMOLED, flexible display and transparent display require specific TFT back-planes. For high performance TFT back-planes, low temperature poly silicon (LTPS), and metal-oxide semiconductors are studied. Flexible TFT backplanes require low temperature processible organic semiconductors. Not only development of active semiconducting materials but also design and synthesis of semiconductor corresponding gate dielectric materials are important issues in those display back-planes. In this study, we investigate the high heat resistant polymeric gate dielectric materials for organic TFT and inorganic TFT with good insulating properties and processing chemical resistance. We also controlled and optimized surface energy and morphology of gate dielectric layers for direct printing process with solution processible organic and inorganic semiconductors.

  • Hard Tin coating on tool steel substrate were prepared using the pulsed PACVE. An orthogonal experimental design was employed to find the best deposition conditions for TiN coating and to systematically understand the effect of processing parameters. The small size Taguchi matrix called the L16 was used for experiment and ANOVA(ANalysis of VAriance) was followed to study the effect of main parameters on hardness and adhesion TiN coatings. In conclusion, pulse on/off time ratio and pulsing frequency were the major deposition parameters to determine hardness and adhesion of TiN coating in the pulsed DC PACVE process. (200) preferred orientation, columnar growth and dome-shaped surface morphology of the TiN films gave rise to a high hardness and a good adhesion to the substrates.

  • We design and demonstrate the controled doping into ZnO nanowires (NWs) adopting self-contrived hot-walled pulsed laser deposition (HW-PLD). Optimized synthesis conditions with the diversified dopants guarantee the excellent crystalinity and morphology as well as electrical properties of the NWs. Proprietary target rotating system in the HW-PLD fuels the controlled formation and doping of the NWs. Prepared NWs sensitive to the environment are systematically characterized, and the doping mechanism is discussed.

  • Niobium microalloying is effective in hot-rolled and cold-rolled steels by providing a fine-grained microstructure resulting in increased strength. To optimize the strengthening effect, alloy design and hot-rolling conditions have to be adapted. As a key issue the dissolution and precipitation characteristics of Nb are discussed in particular with regard to the run-out table conditions. It is then considered how the hot-rolled microstructure and the solute state of Nb interact with the hot-dip galvanizing cycle. The adjusted conditions allow controlling the morphology and distribution of phases in the cold-rolled annealed material. Additional precipitation hardening can be achieved as well. The derived options can be readily applied to produce conventional HSLA and IF high strength steels as well as to modern multiphase steels. It will be explained how important application properties such as strength, elongation, bendability, weldability and delayed cracking resistance can be influenced in a controlled and favorable way. Examples of practical relevance and experience are given.

  • The synthesis of a novel superabsorbent hydrogel with natural hybrid backbone via graft copolymerization of acrylamide (AAm) onto kappa-carrageenan (kC, as a polysaccharide) and gelatin (as a protein) under classic thermal conditions is described. The Taguchi method as a strong experimental design tool was used for synthesis optimization. A series of hydrogels were synthesized by proposed conditions of Qualitek-4 Software. Considering the results of 9 trials according to analysis of variance (ANOVA), optimum conditions were proposed. The swelling behavior of optimum hydrogel was measured in various solutions with pH values ranging from 1 to 13. In addition, swelling kinetics, swelling in various organic solvents, various salt solutions and On–Off switching behavior were investigated. The hydrogel formation was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetrical analysis (TGA). Surface morphology of the synthesized hydrogels was assessed by scanning electron microscope (SEM).

  • The Purpose of this paper is to show the applicability of a methodology, developed by the authors, with which to perform the mechanical optimization of space truss structures strongly restricted. This methodology use a parameter call "Volumetric Displacement", as the Objective Function of the optimization process. This parameter considers altogether the structure weight and deformation whose effects are opposed. The Finite Element Method is employed to calculate the stress/strain state and the natural frequency of the structure through a structural linear static and natural frequency analysis. In order to show the potentially of this simple methodology, its application on a large diameter telescope structure (10 m) considering the strongly restriction that became of its use, is presented. This methodology, applied in previous works on continuous structures, such as shell roof and fluid storage vessels, is applied in this case to a space truss structure, with the purpose of generalize its applicability to different structural topology. This technique could be useful in the morphology design of deployable and retractable roof structures, whose use has extensively spread in the last years.

  • As a promising and novel manufacturing technology, laser aided direct metal deposition (DMD) process produces near-net-shape functional metal parts directly from 3-D CAD models by repeating laser cladding layer by layer. The key of the build-up mechanism is the effective control of powder delivery and laser power to be irradiated into the melt-pool. A feedback control system using two sets of optical height sensors is designed for monitoring the melt-pool and real-time control of deposition dimension. With the feedback height control system, the dimensions of part can be controlled within designed tolerance maintaining real time control of each layer thickness. Clad nugget shapes reveal that the feedback control can affect the nugget size and morphology of microstructure. The pore/void level can be controlled by utilizing pulsed-mode laser and proper design of deposition tool-path. With the present configuration of the control system, it is believed that more innovation of the DMD process is possible to the deposition of layers in 3-D slice.
