Prediction of solute rejection and modelling of steady-state concentration polarisation effects in pressure-driven membrane filtration using computational fluid dynamics

  • A two-dimensional (2D) steady state numerical model of concentration polarisation (CP) phenomena in a membrane channel has been developed using the commercially available computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package CFX (Ansys, Inc., USA). The model incorporates the transmembrane pressure (TMP), axially variable permeate flux, variable diffusivity and viscosity, and osmotic pressure effects. The model has been verified against several benchmark analytical and empirical solutions from the membrane literature. Additionally, the model is able to predict the rejection of an arbitrary solute by the membrane using a pore model, given some basic knowledge of the geometry of the solute molecule or particle, and the membrane pore geometry. This allows for predictive design of membrane systems without experimental determination of the membrane rejection for the specified operating conditions. A demonstration of the model is presented against experimental results for two uncharged test compounds (sucrose and PEG1000) from the literature. The model will be extended to incorporate charge effects, transient simulations, three-dimensional (3D) geometry and turbulent effects in future work.

  • This work describes efforts in the fabrication and testing of robust microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Robustness is typically achieved by investigating non-silicon substrates and materials for MEMS fabrication. Some of the traditional MEMS fabrication techniques are applicable to robust MEMS, while other techniques are drawn from other technology areas, such as electronic packaging. The fabrication technologies appropriate for robust MEMS are illustrated through laminated polymer membrane based pressure sensor arrays. Each array uses a stainless steel substrate, a laminated polymer film as a suspended movable plate, and a fixed, surface micromachined back electrode of electroplated nickel. Over an applied pressure range from 0 to 34 kPa, the net capacitance change was approximately 0.14 pF. An important attribute of this design is that only the steel substrate and the pressure sensor inlet is exposed to the flow; i.e., the sensor is self-packaged.

  • Fuzzy system which are based on membership functions and rules, can control nonlinear, uncertian, complex system well. However, Fuzzy controller has problems: It is difficult to design a stable for amateur. To update the then-part membership functions of the fuzzy controller can be designed using the Optimal fuzzy controller. Then we could be optimized the system choosing a good performance index. The proposed fuzzy controller based on Optimal fuzzy control is an Truck-Backer for demonstration of the robustness of proposed methodology.

  • A broadband microstrip balun is proposed and designed using a ${\lambda}/4$short-stub in order to compensate phase imbalance. For the demonstration, two baluns are proposed and designed using a ${\lambda}/4$ shorted stub. One is a modified form of the conventional Wilkinson balun, and the other is a modified ring hybrid. Baluns are implemented on TLX-9 substrate of which the dielectric constant is 2.54 and the thickness is 0.5mm. The measurements show a bandwidth of 500MHz at the center frequency of 2GHz.

  • The autonomous microgrid is a system that is autonomously operated depending on the grid and internal load condition, without the operator's intervention. In this study, a control algorithm for the microsource and an operation algorithm for the microgrid are proposed to realize the autonomous microgrid system. In addition, a microgrid operation system based on the operation algorithm is proposed. The electromagnetic transient program is used by the proposed microsource control algorithm for simulation, and the validity of the algorithm is verified. The proposed operation system is verified based on a case study using a simulator and test devices.

  • Based on the real-time monitoring by remote sensing and dynamic management by GIS on agricultural land and water resources in arid area, we solved the practicability and popularization of small-scale spatial information service system. Through demonstration, the standards of spatial information service database of agricultural land and water resources is set up, and the agricultural land and water resources management system in Shehezi City of Xinjiang Autonomy is established, which provides periodically the spatial information services needed by agricultural production to support for sustainable development in arid area.

  • We have developed 1 kW-class PEMFC-battery hybrid system independently powering to the building, through the process of system design, current load characteristics analysis, power system configuration for demonstration site and performance evaluation. In order to use the fuel cell and battery as the hybrid type, a control technology for the charging/discharging decision and charging speed of the battery is required rather than using fuel cell. Also output power distribution between PEMFC and the battery is a core of energy management technology. It is confirmed that it is possible to supply independently 1kW powering the building to ensure optimal energy management through the power control experiment of the hybrid system.

  • Both access to healthcare services and income security in case of personal illness are being needed to achieve universal health coverage, which is enshrined in the human rights to health and social security and international standards on social protection. Income security acts on both the social determinants and the adverse consequences of ill health and thus would break the vicious disease-poverty cycle. The government is supposed to implement a demonstration project of sickness benefit in 2022 and to publicize its more specific blueprint for all workers. This study is to suggest basic principles and a framework to design a new sickness benefit for universal health coverage, which is based on reviews on previous studies, related issues, and institutional conditions. This is to provide a theoretical basis to promote further discussion and to support its decision-making.

A Study on a New Approach to Robust Control and Torque Control Response Analysis of Manufacturing robot Based on Monitoring Simulator for Smart Factory

  • This study proposes a new approach to implimentation of robust control and torque control response analysis based on monitoring simulator for smart factory. According to the physical properties of a flexible manipulator, a two time-scale approach, namely, singular perturbation ap proach, is further utilized for thorough analysis and general controller design. It is shown that asymptotic motional tracking can be effectively achieved, whereas the force regulation errors can be made arbitrarily small. For demonstration of the proposed technology performance, experiments of a eight joint flexible manipulator are performed for the proposed control method, and the reliability of proposed control results are illustrated based on monitoring simulator.

Comparative study of CFD and 3D thermal-hydraulic system codes in predicting natural convection and thermal stratification phenomena in an experimental facility

  • Natural circulation phenomena have been nowadays largely revisited aiming to investigate the performances of passive safety systems in carrying-out heat removal under accidental conditions. For this purpose, assessment studies using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and also 3D thermal-hydraulic system codes are considered at different levels of the design and safety demonstration issues. However, these tools have not being extensively validated for specific natural circulation flow regimes involving flow mixing, temperature stratification, flow recirculation and instabilities. In the present study, an experimental test case based on a small-scale pool test rig experiment performed by Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, is considered for code-to-code and code-to-experimental data comparison. The test simulation is carried out using the FLUENT and the 3D thermal-hydraulic system CATHARE-2 codes. The objective is to evaluate and compare their prediction capabilities with respect to the test conditions of the experiment. It was observed that, notwithstanding their numerical and modelling differences, similar agreement results are obtained. Nevertheless, additional investigations efforts are still needed for a better representation of the considered phenomena.
