  • When the number of items of same type of industrial property is quite large, calculating depreciation for a group of such items may be more efficient than depreciating each item separately. Several different depreciation systems may be used for group depreciation. If the life of each vintage in an account are not estimated, then the BG procedure can be used; the BG procedure puts all vintages of the same type of property into a single broad group for depreciation purposes. In this case, only an estimate of the PASL and the net salvage ratio for all the property in the broad group is needed to calculate the depreciation charge.

  • The purpose of this study is to present a rational depreciation method for a pyroprocess cost calculation. Toward this end, the so-called advanced decelerated depreciation method (ADDM) was developed that complements the limitations of the existing depreciation methods such as the straight-line method and fixed percentage of declining-balance method. ADDM was used to show the trend of the direct material cost and direct labor cost compared to the straight-line or fixed percentage of the declining-balance methods that are often used today. As a result, it was demonstrated that the depreciation cost of the ADDM, which assumed a pyroprocess facility's life period to be 40 years with a deceleration rate of 5%, takes up 4.14% and 27.74% of the pyroprocess unit cost ($781/kg heavy metal) in the $1^{st}$ and final years, respectively. In other words, it was found that the ADDM can cost the pyroprocess facility's capital investment rationally every year. Finally, ADDM's validity was verified by confirming that the sum of the depreciation cost by year, and the sum of the purchasing cost of the building and equipment, are the same.

  • Estimation of mortality behavior of a industrial property are useful for calculating depreciation and making management decisions relating to property. The common methods of computing depreciation require an estimation of service life, and some methods may require an estimate of life expectancy. Estimation of service life and life expectancy can be computed from a smoothed and extended life table of original life tables developed through life analysis techniques. Several actuarial techniques are available to construct a life table for depreciation application. Of these methods, the graphic approach and graduation by mathematical formula are the most widely used in the field of depreciation. A commonly used technique of smoothing and of extending the life table is to fit a lows type survivor curves to the observed retirement rate by the least square method. In this paper, estimates of depreciation rate based on directly observed data of the domestic petrochemical equipments are presented.

  • Depreciation accounting has as its main objective, the recovery of the original cost of plant investment less net salvage, over the estimated useful life of that plant. Accuracy of the whole life technique in meeting this objective depends entirely on the original estimates of service life and net salvages for an account. Where the whole life technique has been used and original estimates prove inaccurate, excessive or deficient accumulations in the depreciation reserve frequently occur. To overcome this, the remaining life technique is suggested to better match the challenges of accelerated technology and competition within the regulated environment. The flexibility of the remaining life technique will allow an even chance to provide a complete recovery of the original cost.

  • Several different depreciation systems may be used for group depreciation. The vintage group procedure treats the same type of property placed in service during the same year as a distinct group for depreciation purposes; therefore an estimate of the probable average service life and net salvage ratio(s) of each individual vintage is necessary. The vintage group procedure calculates an accrual rate for each vintage and the accrual rate for an account for specific calendar year is the weighted average vintage accrual rate for that calendar year. A further refinement would be to divide each vintage into groups such that all of the dollars in a group have the same estimated life-an equal life group (ELG). Then each ELG is depreciated over its estimated life. The effect is to recover each dollar over the estimated number of years it is in service. Each vintage is divided into several equal life groups (ELGs) such that all the property in a specific ELG has the same estimated life. The accrual rate for each ELG is based on the estimated life of that ELG. The vintage accrual rate for a specific year is the weighted average ELG accrual rate for that calendar year. In this paper, we illustrate the calculations of vintage accrual rates for each of the calendar years by the ELG depreciation systems.

  • When the number of items of same type of industrial property is quite large, calculating depreciation for a group of such item may be more efficient than depreciating each item separately. Also, predicting the service life of a specific individual unit is very difficult to do with any degree of accuracy. Estimating the probable average service life (PASL) of many units (or dollars) is not an easy task; however, an average life of many units can probably be predicted with a much higher degree of accuracy than the life of some particular unit. Using the average of many units allows for some units having relatively short lives and some units having relatively long lives without specifying whether a particular unit will have a short or a long life. If the life of each vintage in an account are not estimated, then the broad group procedure can be used. The broad group procedure depreciates the several vintage in an account as a single group. The PASL for this procedure is the estimate of the average of lives of the individual dollars in the group. If the estimated PASL's of the vintages are not the same, then a weighted average PASL would have to be calculated for each calendar year. In this paper, we illustrate the calculations of accrual rates and the annual depreciation charge for each of the calendar years by the broad group depreciation procedure.

  • The estimation of mortality characteristics of industrial property is an important adjunct to engineering valuation and depreciation estimation. Once the important of depreciation estimation is determined, it is desirable to understand the processes upon which these estimates are based. The Iowa type survivor curves are a set of generalized retirement dispersion models. These curves were based on analysis of actual retirement experience and represent typical retirement behavior patterns likely to be encountered. The retirement rate of Iowa type survivor curves on the semiconductor equipments in Korea industry was estimated by the life estimation process. In this paper, estimates of service lives based on directly observed data of the domestic semiconductor equipments are presented.

  • A citation-based method of estimating the life span of a patented technology is proposed In this study. The suggested framework Includes : (1) estimation of citation frequency of an individual patent within a technology group. (2) calculation of a mutual citation frequency between citing patent and cited patents, (3) calculation of the period for cited patents from the year of registration to the year of being cited most recently and (4) description for technology group using descriptive statistics such as mean, median, mode, etc. The framework suggested in this study was applied to the US patent data between 1976 and 2004 for 5 communications areas.

  • Break-even analysis is a simple and useful tool in decisions and planning activities though its use is somewhat limited to short-term analysis. The subject is discussed in the fields of engineering economics, production management, cost and managerial accounting, finance, marketing, and so on. Conventional break-even analysis suits the case of stable price and low interest rate. In this paper, we try to overcome the limit by considering following factors, namely, time value of money, depreciation, tax, and capital gains. Also, considering learning effect, we increase applicability to a new project which raises certain changes such as a replacement of production process, an employee turnover, etc. Thus, we suggest a model which has a dynamic break-even quantity per period for the project. Furthermore, we examine the effect of inflation in break-even analysis.

  • International capital movement has made progress at global liberalization of finance and foreign exchange, international monetary norm changing into floating exchange rate system, easiness of collection of information and trade at improvement of information communication technology from early of 1970's. Results of empirical test for relation between foreign exchange rate or various determination factors of foreign exchange rate and interest rate are followed by next sentences. First, according to relation between foreign exchange rate and interest rate, correlation for each of variables after OECD entrance is increased. But, long-term & short-term interest rate is affected by Hanbo & Kia's bankruptcy, continuous large scale corporates bankruptcy and crisis of foreign exchange. Therefore, financial instability is occured. If portfolio investment fund has been inflow as it is mollified by continuous shortage of foreign exchange and fall of country's credit rating, it is expected to have positive effect for long-term & short-term interest rate from appreciation of won against dollar. Second, results from relation between determination factor of foreign exchange rate and interest rate are followed by next sentences. If surplus of current account and goods account is continued, yield of corporate bond is to be stable. But, margin of surplus is expected to diminish after second quarter 98, and difference between external and domestic interest (after adjusting foreign exchange rate) is to be diminished. And if net inflows of foreign investor's fund (stock and bond) is diminished, it is to have negative effect for yield of corporate bond. According to foreign investor's investment movement of previous years, hedge fund were stayed at least during two years in Mexico. It means that sudden capital outflow is not to be happened at Korea. But if external factors from depreciation of yen and China's renminbi are instable, interest rate is expected to increase from capital's outflows. Third, if it is to decrease instability of foreign exchange rate from increase in surplus of future current account, credit rating's upwardness, stability of yen and renminbi, foreign exchange rate is expected to be stable. It is expected to have continuous stability from short-term interest rate to long-term interest rate in this empirical test.
